There is a indoor bar but its seperately owned which is weird and the kitchen is an outdoor kitchen in the backyard behind the bar which for sanitary reasons I do hope it has pass the health code regulations test... The bathroom is an outhouse next to the backyard kitchen and is somewhat clean... I had to dock a star for health code reasons... They do say the best cultural food never pass that standard but still I do feel uncomfortable with what I eat from a kitchen in the backyard next to an outhouse. Anyways service is excellent from the hostess who kept refilling our water to our server who constantly checked on us and gave us excellent recommedations. He also had this cute European accent. Also the bus boy was ever so kind too when removing our plates and getting new ones. Lobster Mac and Cheese (5/5) ok by far the best I ever had. The portion is really small for the price dont get me wrong but worth every bite. The cheesiness and the breadcumbs blended perfectly with the lobster and pasta.. yum! The vegetable I could do without because it was overcooked but the mash potato was soo creamy and good. A tradition that my wife and I have had is trying to visit a place that has been featured on Diners Drive ins and Dives when we are in a new city. The interior of Grunts dates back to the 1800's. It is filled with lots of old time memorabilia including a jukebox and coca cola machine. You have to get coins from the bartender to operate the coke machine. (Very old school). When we were deciding on what to eat the waiter made some recommendations. When I showed interest in the Lobster Mac and Cheese he informed me they can also make it an entree size even though it is not listed on the menu. I was sold. We accompanied it with the Fish Taco appetizer. Perfect amount of food for the both of us. The Fish Tacos were not Mahi Mahi but a local fish called Basa. It is a very mild fish which is perfect in the taco. It is served with avocado, spicy chipotle and a mango papaya chutney. The Lobster Mac and cheese was a food org--m. With large chunks of spiny lobster, white Truffle oil. It is topped with Panko breadcrumbs and baked to perfection with a nice crust on top. Both items were so filling no dessert was necessary. We came here on a local ' s recommendation. We got here early because it gets very busy and can be low on staff. We were seated and served promptly. We enjoyed some wine and beer because there is no liquor here. No problem! The chef makes everything from scratch so he was able to accommodate my food allergies with ease. He made me a large portion of Mahi Mahi with mashed potatoes in a lemon butter sauce. I think I inhaled it in 20 seconds. It was THAT good. My family ate their seared Ahi tuna and lobster with similar gusto. The portions are just right and we left feeling satisfied. Try the desserts. The Key Lime pie was one of the best we sampled. Returned last night after 2 years and was blown away....last time we were here they had only been open 2 weeks, the owner's wife was 8 months pregnant and they were just starting a dream....well the dream has become a reality and this is an awesome restaurant. Beautiful setting under the tress with great music compliments the flavorful appetizers and entrees. Bar is a separate business ( so you will receive 2 checks ) and only beer and wine are available. Wow! Just wow... This is a hidden gem I found with the help of wonderful Yelpers. They guided me through the streets of Key West to find exactly what I wanted. The patio was beautiful with moody lighting for some great ambiance. We started out with bread our waitress brought to the table. It was light and already garnished with olive oil and herbs. So good! I had the lobster macaroni and cheese. Yes, it is as heavenly as it sounds. Anything with truffle oil is amazing but this was a whole new level of creamy and delicious. I have never given a 1 star rating for any business in any platform. I do feel to need to give this place the worst rating possible to reflect the bad practice and the lack of respect my gf and I received while dining there. Server came to take order and then just disappear for almost 40 minutes !! 40 mins was a long time to wait for food to begin with, and within that 40 mins, not once did the server come over to check on us, ask if we need another drink, or even a quick "your food is on the way". Just let us sit there with no attention at all. He did, however, come around in the central area a few times ( we sat in the side) to check on other guests . Each and every single time when he came over, I was looking at him, trying to make eye contact, even waving at the end, trying to get his attention but he Just NEVER look our way. Ok, then the food came. We were pretty hungry at that time. After 40 mins wait and no bread of any kind was offered. If we were told about the long wait, we would have ordered some appetizers. But then how can we expect to be told anything when there no absolutely no service. Anyway, we ordered the mahimahi and scallop and the lobster dish. They were good, not great. And then the worst thing happened. The bill came with a 20% tips included !! It wasn't a suggested amount. It was a 20% tips already included in the total of my bill. That is something I have never heard of. Forcing customer to pay tip because they knew their service was utterly terrible. It was no difference than a robbery.. Gratuity is customary but absolutely depends on the customers' free will. If there was non existing service, the server deserve less or no tips. Forcing the customers to pay is really low. We were vacation in key west and staying at the Sheraton.. Certainly wouldn't mind 20-30% tips for avg to good service. We would pay at least 15% for bad service actually. But forcing us to pay tips.. That's nothing lower than that. This is a bad restaurant with bad service. This place feels like a locals joint and based on the casual owner sitting at the bar with another local (and the cute hippie-chick tender of bar telling me more locals come here than Crocs-wearing noodniks) I knew I'd have a great meal that didn't involve a souvenir cup and a t-shirt purchase. It's tucked away off Duval and is a super low-key in its vibe. I had drinks in the cozy bar and had a great conversation with the aforementioned bar keep that didn't feel like she had to talk to me. Once the chef had his rig up and running I dove in to the menu with lobster mac n cheese and fish tacos. Lobster mac is my ish and no matter where I travel, if it's on the menu, I get it. 14 countries of experiencing lobster mac and Grunts blew me away. I should have ordered 3 bowls of it. Just yummy. The fish tacos were also good and had hints of sesame and a Thai vibe to it. Loved my meal and sangria outside in the super chill courtyard. If you're on yelp*, you'll appreciate the effort you've spent to read the reviews to help you avoid the Coyote Fuglies and whatever other BS places are on Duval. Just off of Duval Street, which makes for a quiet location but still near the heart of the action. We both ordered fish entrees and both were excellent. My fish (Mahi) was slightly overcooked (just a bit), but my scallops were perfect and overall the dish was delicious. My girlfriend's fish (snapper) and shrimp were excellent and perfectly cooked. I opened Yelp and search all the nearby restaurants with high stars, and Grunts just jumped out. Their tables are in the front yard like other restaurants on the island, as it's a little away from Duval street, it's pretty quiet. We made a reservation for a party of 10 the night before, and they were incredibly flexible when we had to change our reservation a few hours before the actual reservation time. We absolutely loved this place. The food has been our favorite on this trip. (Going to be here 10 full days.) We shared the ceviche which was out if this world. Then when dinner came, I had a bite from each plate of our party of 5 and the food was yummy for everyone. The bar was great too. We happened to be there watching local people come in for the Live Love Debbie for queen poker run. The bartender was sassy and fun. She made the extra effort to help me find a drink I could drink ( I can't have sulfites) We are going back again for dinner before we leave. Was surprised to find this gem quite dead on a Thursday night. 4 stars for the service being a little off, though nothing terrible. Lots and lots of lobster and truffle oil on the menu. Huge plus! We shared a lobster pizza w arugula and goat cheese. It was amazing. Would have liked for there to be more lobster. I also had a prosciutto salad and was disappointed that although the plating was excellent and the salad divine, the seeds and core had been left on some of my pear slices. Coconut key lime pie for dessert was wonderful and my key lime martini complimented that quite well. All in all a great little place but to move to 5 stars some improvements could be made. A real hidden gem in Key West! This place is a welcome respite from the throngs of drunk tourists and other party-goers. Don't be misled by the name. The restaurant has a nice, peaceful outdoor ambiance. The food was fabulous. I got the breaded, baked Basa fish and my companion got the red snapper. Both were just delicious. 2 glasses of wine, and then the best key lime pie ever for dessert. The most marvelous thing about this place is that the kitchen is just tiny! I don't know how they whip up such amazing food here. It's a limited menu, so they didn't have any coffee or tea to go with our dessert. Service was pleasant and attentive. We were even allowed to smoke a cigar here after dinner. This was our last stop on our vacation, so it was a very nice way to end our vacation. Would high recommend.
