Ice Lemon Tea - Just the right amount of lemon to tea ratio (can taste both equally), insane serving size Pineapple orange chicken - good crisp on exterior, and flavorful. But feels like there's no chicken -- it's like a 60-40 shell to chicken ratio Stir Fried Beef w/ Peppers: seasoned well and beef is tender, but the beef in our portion was really small -- wish the beef was cut in a way such that there was more surface area instead of there being a bunch of really small pieces Crispy walnut shrimp: love the fry on it and how the shrimp is taken out of the shell but still fried with it! Not sure if it was because we had it after our other two dishes but it felt very bland which was disappointing because it was fried so well. Restaurant itself is spacious and has great decor (big plus on the bowls of vegetables when you walk in LOL) -- but service was kind of all over the place. For example, our server would have something our table needed, but would get distracted halfway through delivering it and help another table -- instead of just delivering the items and then helping the other table... This ambiance here is really nice! They have indoor and outdoor seating. My favorite dish was probably the walnut shrimp. It had jumbo shrimp that was nice and crispy. They pull the meat out of the shell which made it easier to eat. I wish it had a little more sauce to it. I thought the stir fries were just mid. Got the beef and pork one. The pork was a miss for me. The beef one was better but nothing spectacular. For $33 a stir fry, I think I was expecting a little more. The house special beef fried rice uses basmati rice vs jasmine rice. I think that threw me off a little. The basmati rice has a different flavor and texture than jasmine. I like it better with jasmine rice because it soaks up all the flavors better and has that chewiness. The kale was crunchy with pieces garlic. I don't think I'd order imagine tho. It didn't have much flavor to it. The ice lemon tea was bomb! It comes in a huge cup and has the lemon pulp in it. They give you the milk ice cream at the end that has a wierd taste to it. The most famous stir fry in China is now in San Diego ! First time here so I had to get a little bit of everything ! We Started things out with the most famous item. Beef stir fry with peppers. Delicious! Make sure you try their signature ice lemon tea. We tried their pineapple orange chicken. Their ambiance is amazing, lots of seating and open kitchen you can see them making the food. Next item was a great one, beef deep fried rice with wagyu beef ! It also had a fried egg on top! We also tried the glass noodles with seafood sauce, also very good. For dessert we tried their rice cakes with cream inside. Out of all this food, my favorite item would be the beef stir fry with peppers. Staff was amazing & helpful. After learning that Chef Fei had soft opened on Friday the 28th, I was able to visit twice before the grand opening this past Saturday. They had been heavily marketing the North American debut of this Hunan stir-fry restaurant as you couldn't walk several feet around the Westfield UTC Mall without seeing a banner on a light pole or a screen on a kiosk about its upcoming presence. I still found it amazing that ownership picked San Diego as the first market on this side of the Pacific for this large Asian chain. A suite in the northwest corner of the mall that housed an upscale wine bar and restaurant was renovated for Chef Fei. The front covered patio could seat about 70 customers while the inside capacity was at least double that number. I noticed that green was the prominent color as opposed to red which is considered a sign of prosperity in Chinese culture. A sign in front indicated the business hours were from 11 am to 10 pm on weekdays and 10:30 am to 10 pm on weekends. During the soft opening period, the place did not seat customers for dinner until starting at 5 pm. That apparently caused confusion and disappointment because it didn't match the stated hours of operation. Each time we gave our party name to a hostess at the entrance to get ourselves on the waitlist. At my first visit, the wait was around 90 minutes before we were seated. That shrunk to less than 60 minutes during the second visit. You can now use Yelp to make online reservations, but I believe the dates are filling quickly. Half a dozen appetizers were listed on the first menu page. Entrees with beef, chicken/egg, pork, seafood, and tofu/vegetables spanned across the second and third pages. Rice, noodles, greens, dessert, and beverages made up the last page. The signature drink was the Iced Lemon Tea which came in a large glass for $4.79. I think nearly every table ordered this as a cool refreshment to the spicy dishes. These were the items I tried across the two dinners. * Smashed Chili Eggplant with Century Egg * Stir-Fried Beef with Peppers * Steamed Organic Egg Custard * Stir-Fried Pork with Peppers * Glass Noodle Clay Pot with Seafood Sauce * Kale with Garlic * Egg Fried Rice The signature dish was the Stir-Fried Beef with Peppers. Slices of wagyu beef sourced from Snake River Farms were wok-seared with red chili, celery, and fresh garlic. The tender meat quality was evident. The serving size was less than I had hoped for $32.79. The other dishes that stood out were the Smashed Chili Eggplant with Century Egg and the Steamed Organic Egg Custard. The first was served inside a mortar and pestle. Ironically, one of my dining companions said it needed more century egg while the other felt the eggplant was overshadowed by the green chili. I enjoyed the unique preparation as I have not seen this anywhere else in the SD area. The egg custard was topped with Kurobuta minced pork and scallions. It was a simple preparation but done well by the kitchen. I didn't think any item was outrageously priced as the most expensive offering on the menu was $35. That being said, some things were executed more cleanly with a better value than others. The spiciness level for one chile pepper was noticeable but not unbearable. I would describe it as a latent heat that hit the back of your throat instead of burning your lips upon contact. Chef Fei is a great addition to the portfolio of restaurants at the mall. The scale of their wok-style cooking is not something you will find locally. In the short term, I think it will be a destination dining location as folks from LA and OC will likely drive down for an initial experience. I gave a four star rating for my two meals at Chef Fei. read more

One of the newest restos at UTC mall in La Jolla and the first Chef Fei branch in the US. I love anything stir fry, love to make it at home plus the added spiceness always takes it to another level so been pretty excited to finally try Chef Fei and it definitely lived up to its name and the hype!!! These were what I ordered for the family: 1. Stir-Fried Pork with Peppers 15/10 -- This should be your #1 must-order. Berkshire pork, fresh peppers, and intense high-heat wok cooking. It's one of Chef Fei's signature dishes and is specifically marked as a chef's recommendation. Expect smoky, savory, spicy flavors. 2. Stir-Fried Beef with Peppers 12/10 -- The restaurant's featured signature dish uses American Wagyu beef with organic broccoli. If you want to understand what Chef Fei is famous for, order this!! 3. Steamed Pork Ribs with Taro 15/10 -- A totally different experience from the wok dishes: tender ribs with soft, creamy taro absorbing the pork juices. Less aggressive and more comforting but full of umami flavor. Balances well with the other dishes!! But I wished there were more ribs than taro as the ratio was a tad off for my liking 4. Smashed Chili Eggplant with Century Egg -- 15/10 - this dish definitely surprised me. It was so good so definitely get this if you want something distinctively Hunan rather than familiar American-Chinese flavors. Smoky eggplant + green chili + century egg gives it an earthy, spicy, deeply savory flavor. 5. House Special Beef Fried Rice - 12/10 -- Get this for the table rather than plain rice. It uses diced American Wagyu and is deliberately kept fairly simple so it works with the stronger Hunan dishes. 6. Green beans and cucumber salad - both were good appetizers. 7. Their lemon iced tea is A MUST!! So refreshing and you can really taste the black tea. We were so satisfied with what we had and will definitely come back to try other dishes. This Chinese restaurant is known for their beef stir fry, so of course we had to try it! One thing I really liked is that it comes with a food warmer underneath to keep the food hot. Honestly, I think this should be an industry standard. But the beef stir fry itself was kinda mediocre and didn't live up to the hype. We also ordered the stir-fried cabbage and beef fried rice. The cabbage was the star of the meal for me. It had so much wok hei. Prices are on the higher side and the restaurant is very comfortable. Service was spectacular! With it being their first weekend officially opening, I was pleasantly surprised by how smoothly everything ran! We put our names down at opening at 11am and got seated within 20 min. Service was friendly and our server, Stephen, was quick to help us order and was helpful in providing recommendations. We ordered everything he suggested including stir fried beef with peppers, pineapple orange chicken, beef fried rice, and cabbage dry pot along with their lemon tea. This was the perfect amount for 3 people to finish. Portions were a bit smaller than expected especially for the stir fried beef which is on the pricier end, but everything was cooked well and delicious. We enjoyed every dish! The lemon tea is huge and paired really well with the food, especially the stir fried beef which has a kick to it. Two of us shared a tea and it was the perfect amount. Went to the soft opening for chef fei. We got here around 6 pm and the wait was about an hour. The restaurant is quite large and we were seated indoors. Everything inside is very new, modern, and comfortable for a family dinner. We ordered the pork with peppers, orange pineapple chicken, stir fried cauliflower, and the smashed eggplant as well as the iced lemon tea. Everything we had was quite delicious. My only criticism is that I wish the smashed eggplant with century egg had more eggplant in it. It felt like it had more peppers than eggplant. Our server Nikki did great checking in on us and making sure we got our food right away. I went for their soft opening and I had a really nice time. The food was quite tasty. My favorite was the glass noodles stir fry in seafood sauce. Even though it was a bit salty, the seafood flavor was super strong, making the dish savory and filled with umami flavor. The stir fry beef was also good but nothing mind blowing. I don't think I could justify the price for it but it was still nice to try. I definitely think their house special beef fried rice was worth it. It was so tasty and it was a large portion with big chunks of beef. Even though it was really busy, the food didn't take too long to come out. Our server, Sean, was very nice and I also enjoyed the little chant/song another server did for our house special stir fry beef. It made the experience very fun! Overall, I'd definitely come back. Came on opening day and the wait wasn't bad for a party of 10z We waited under and hour. the orange chicken was a hit! Our kids loved it! Chef Fei just opened at UTC in La Jolla and it is so worth checking out! The Pork Stir Fry was easily one of the standouts and a must-order. It comes out incredibly flavorful, and you can actually see into the kitchen while they cook - the flames shooting up from the wok make the whole experience even better. We also loved the Orange Chicken and Chow Mein. Everything tasted fresh, well-seasoned, and you can tell there's a lot of skill behind the dishes. And don't skip the fresh iced tea! My relatives came back into San Diego, mainly hoping to try for the first time, the very first Chef Fei restaurant in the US and North America. Allegedly the place is a hit all over China, having started in Hunan, China. As someone who grew up frequenting UTC, this was a truly awesome treat, and I obviously take pride in our city being the first to welcome this restaurant. Usually a restaurant will first come to Los Angeles, so massive double points for choosing San Diego. From the jump, the restaurant delivered on so many fronts. Food, environment, customer service, etc. On hot summer days and knowing you're going to eat hot spicy food, it is recommended to get seated outside on the front patio and order their exquisite (King's) iced lemon tea. It's also pretty difficult to get a reservation being in part that it's opening month, so try to show up early. Spark was a fantastic server who was able to answer any question, big or small. So being that several of us wanted a lighter meal, we totally savored the Hot and Sour Shredded Potatoes and Bamboo Shoots with Pickled Greens. All very tasty and finely sliced. Since some of us really like pork tongue, pig ear, and tofu, we even enjoyed the Hunan Spicy Braised Assortment. Make sure to have that with rice since the Hunan chili in it is one of a kind. Of course we had to have the Signature Stir-Fried (Wagyu) Beef with Pepper and the House Special Beef Fried Noodle and of course it was all satisfying with very decent portions. For dessert, the hot Crispy Rice Cake with Black Sugar Syrup came in a set of five, each on a stick. It seriously oozed black sugar from the inside which still surprised me. Came during their soft opening, there was a long wait to get it. There was both inside and outside seating. We were sat inside. When we finally got seated service was friendly and helpful. We got the lemon tea which was huge and tasty. We got the smashed chili eggplant with century egg. A very unique item it was mildly spicy and creamy from the smashed century egg. It tasted like there was green onion but I guess it was the green chili. It was very smooth and had a mild garlic flavor. Highly recommend this one just because it's unique. Got their signature dish, stir fried beef with peppers. The US wagyu beef was thinly sliced and tossed with veggies and red chillies. The small wok was kept hot with a stand with a candle on the table. It was a little salty but you could tell that every thing was well cooked and had the wok hei (breath of the wok) Stir fried pork with peppers. Almost the same as the beef version but the vegetables were a little different and not as spicy as the beef. They use kurobuta pork and like the beef it's very thinly sliced so that the high heat of the wok cooks it quickly. Both stir fried dishes were on the salty side but showcased the wok hei. The lemon tea was mildly sweet and did well to both temper the heat of the chilli peppers and saltiness. The egg fried rice was my least favorite because they use basmati rice. The rice is the long grain type that you find in Mediterranean cuisine so it isn't sticky and doesn't absorb the juices and flavor of the stir fries or whatever you're eating with it. They are located in the UTC mall across Katsuya ko next to ramen Nagi and La Colombe. Service was very attentive I also liked that tables were set further apart not crammed in like most places. I'd definitely come back to try Chef Fei's crispy roast chicken, steamed pork ribs with taro, and braised beef brisket with potatoes. After seeing this restaurant on TikTok, my family and I were dying to try it. Without a reservation, we waited about 40 minutes which was lower than the expected time. The ambiance is warm and everyone greets you as you walk in. Nikki was our server and she was so sweet and great! She greeted us with a smile and was always happy to help. She made us feel so welcome. The food was beyond expectations. The beef stir fry and fried rice were our favorites. The lemon iced tea is a must have. We will definitely be coming back! read more

So happy it's here!!! It's beautiful! So many seats and the staff are all so kind! Treated super well here. While waiting they offered water and stickers for my son. Food was all so good and reasonably priced to me. Especially when sharing family style. We only got the Cabbage which was so good! The wagyu steak with peppers they're know for and yes that was soo amazing. Tender, juicy, and spicy! We got the egg fried rice made with basmati rice instead of traditional but still delicious. Reminded me of biryani. Got the famous lemon tea which was good like an Arnold Palmer. Pretty cheap for the size to me so I loved it! They also provided my son with a cute panda bib! Everything was so good! We had been waiting for Chef Fei to open for a while, and it was definitely worth the wait. We came for their soft opening and arrived around 4:45 p.m. to join the waitlist before they opened at 5:00 p.m. Once they opened, we were seated pretty quickly, within about 10 minutes. The service and hospitality were amazing. Someone was always checking on us, and the entire staff was so welcoming and attentive. The food was incredibly authentic and delicious. Some of our favorite dishes were the clay pot tofu, orange chicken, and clay pot vermicelli, but honestly, I don't think you can go wrong with anything on the menu. Their lemon tea was also so refreshing, and the portion was huge! The food reminded me of being back in China and eating with my family, which made the experience feel even more special. There were a few items that were sold out, like the noodle dish but we had plenty of other options to choose from. Our faves were the pineapple orange chicken and wagyu fried rice. I also liked the cucumber salad and wood ear mushroom dish. They definitely don't skimp on the garlic here. I saw that every table had a huge cup of lemon ice tea so i decided to order one too. I love all the variety at UTC and so excited for a new Chinese place here! We had a reservation for 8 on a Wednesday lunch time. I'd recommend reservations while they are first opening since I've heard of long wait times here. We really liked all the food here! Highlights are the stir fried beef, honey walnut shrimp (that is more like just fried shrimp), the pineapple orange chicken, and the house noodles with beef. All dishes were super flavorful. As soon as we walked in, the server immediately told us they were already closed. My mother politely pointed out that the posted closing time was 10:00 PM and simply asked if the kitchen happened to close earlier than the dining room. Instead of explaining the situation professionally, the server responded in a very rude tone: "Well, you guys can eat and order, but at 10:00 PM you need to be gone and out the door." Another employee then stepped in to back him up, making the interaction feel even more uncomfortable. I completely understand how the restaurant business works. I've been around the industry long enough to know that kitchens often stop taking orders before closing or that staff are trying to finish cleaning at the end of the night. If they had simply said, "We're sorry, but our kitchen is already closed," or even, "We can still serve you, but we're finishing up for the night," we would have completely understood. There was no reason to speak to us disrespectfully. What made this experience frustrating is that we never came in with an attitude or demanded special treatment. We were polite from the moment we walked through the door. We simply asked a reasonable question based on the restaurant's posted business hours, and instead of receiving a courteous explanation, we were met with unnecessary hostility. Customer service is just as important as the food. A welcoming attitude can make guests want to return, while a rude interaction can overshadow everything else. Unfortunately, this experience left such a negative impression that I won't be returning. I also would not feel comfortable bringing my family or recommending this restaurant to friends because everyone deserves to be treated with basic respect. I hope management takes this review as constructive feedback and reminds their staff that even when it's close to closing time, a little kindness and professionalism go a long way.

If in doubt get more dumplings rather than their other dishes; that's what they specialize it and are best at.

We came to Chef Fei in San Diego today, and we had such a great dining experience. This was our first time trying this restaurant, and it definitely lived up to our expectations. From the food to the overall atmosphere, everything made us feel like we made a great choice for our meal. The highlight was definitely the food. We ordered several dishes to share, and we were genuinely happy with everything that came to the table. The dishes looked appetizing when they arrived, and more importantly, they tasted just as good as they looked. Everything was flavorful, aromatic, and perfect to enjoy with rice. The seasoning had a lot of depth, and the food was rich and satisfying without feeling like it was simply relying on oil or salt for flavor. It's a great option if you're in San Diego and craving Chinese food, especially if you enjoy Hunan cuisine, spicy flavors, and dishes that pair perfectly with rice. Overall, we left very happy and satisfied with our meal. At the end of the day, the most important thing about a restaurant is the food, and everything we ordered today was delicious and everyone at our table was happy with the dishes. Pineapple Orange Chicken: Super crispy with a light, balanced sweetness that didn't overwhelm. Beef Stir-Fry: Extremely tasty; while it carried a bit too much black pepper for my personal taste but it was well presented and wow delicious. Lemon Iced Tea: Generously portioned--my son is 6'1" and the glass looked like it was made specifically for his build! I need to have an honorable mention for their housemade chili sauce/oil. Pairing it with their dishes completely elevated it and have more flavor to it all. That chili sauce is amazingly delicious! For the crowd-pleasers, the Crispy Walnut Shrimp came out huge and juicy in a feather-light batter, while the Pineapple Orange Chicken stayed impressively crunchy under a bright, tangy citrus glaze. We sat around 5PM right when they opened for dinner and got sat right away. The atmosphere was a 10/10 love the design, flow and color of the restaurant! The food itself was actually pretty good, and I thought the prices were reasonable. I arrived around 12 PM and was told the wait would be up to 2 hours. We actually got seated after around an hour, which was better than expected. Unfortunately, the overall dining experience was still bit disappointing，Only a few hours after opening, two of the three dishes I wanted to order -- the Smashed chili eggplant with Century Egg and the clay pot Tofu -- were already unavailable. We ordered their signature Stir-Fried Beef with Peppers , but it took over 40 minutes to come out. I understand that this is a newly opened and extremely busy restaurant, so some waiting is expected. But if you're prepared to have customers wait 1-2 hours just to get a table, I think the kitchen should also be better prepared in terms of ingredient availability and ticket times. Overall, the food and pricing were good, but the operation still needs some improvement. Hopefully things will become smoother after the opening rush. read more

10/10 would come again! We ordered the egg fried rice, clay pot noodle, stir fry beef, chicken soup, and the chilli smashed egg plant. The chicken soup was probably one of the best soups we've ever had , and the chicken melts in your mouth. Definitely one of the must order things. The lemon teas were also very big and authentic, tasted just like the ones in Hong Kong growing up. The beef and clay pot noodle were both very soft, and were kept warm by the pots they were in. As for the egg fried rice, you get a pretty big portion for the price, and the rice is pretty special. Our server Nikki was very nice, attentive, and explained everything to us pretty well. Checked in on us, and was pretty quick with getting our food out once we placed our order. Definitely a highlight of our experience!! I kept seeing this newly opened restaurant all over social media, so I decided to stop by Chef Fei at Westfield UTC and see what the hype was about. The restaurant is spacious and modern, and the atmosphere felt lively without being too overwhelming. We ordered several dishes to share, but my favorite was the American Wagyu with fresh chilies. The beef was tender and juicy, and the chilies gave it a nice kick without overpowering the flavor of the meat. The sauce was especially good over warm rice. Where should I start.. We were so excited to try Chef Fei but it didn't live up to its hype. Every dish was lacking flavor or texture was awful from the meats. We got the beef stir fry and the pork stir fry both were awful. The fried rice wasn't good as well especially using basmati rice was not the right choice. The veggies we got were also an absolute no for us. Most of the food was left at the table we just didn't like it. 275.00 in the trash which really disappointed me. I hope the review will be honest and no fake ones because that's not fair to the consumer.
