I decided to cancel my order, received a phone call from the company about why I was cancelling, told them I had just read some very poor reviews, and this is the email I received from them. " Your order has been cancelled. You are wasting our time. DO NOT ENTER OUR WEBSITE AGAIN. Chef Depot .com " The aggressive email was unprofessional on its own, but at the time of the phone call and their follow-up email, there was no attempt by them to apologize about the poor reviews online, nor to try and keep my business as a 1st time concerned customer, nor any other gesture to protect their reputation and alleviate my concerns. Their deplorable email back to me simply confirmed my original decision to cancel the order after having read poor reviews, and that they are not a company with whom one should engage in any way. There are other fantastic competitor companies out there who have terrific selections equal to or better than this firm, and know how to run a business and how to handle customer concerns without resorting to bullying or demanding a customer never visit their website again. I ordered a Waring Blender and was shipped "Edibles", which was not my order. They told us to enjoy the Edibles, but they will find the blender that was shipped to Maryland. It finally came, missing the blade, the rubber ring, and owner's manual. I shipped the unusable blender back to then requesting a full refund on a botched order and was given a partial refund since the $100 refund was "more than generous on our side". They made me pay dearly for their double mistakes. NEVER will I use this site again because of poor customer service, charging me for their stupid mistakes, and telling me they were "more than generous" in a partial refund when it was their mistake all along. Buyer's beware!!! I wish I would have read alllllll of the reviews first before purchasing and dealing with this company. It is a horrible experience when things go wrong with this company. We had quite an unsatisfactory experience with chef depot. We ordered a large roasting pan for thanksgiving. It arrived damaged and, when we took it out of its plastic wrap, we also realized it was carbon steel and very high maintenance. The pan was greased and a note enclosed with it indicated that it should always be completely greased. (This is NOT clear on the roasting pan page). For both reasons, we wanted to return it. Chef Depot responded with a return number and said to send it back. However, when I took it in to post office, the postage was going to be $31 for a $54 dollar item. I knew we had only paid $9 for postage originally and wrote to inquire if they could advise on how to mail it for less money. They said they subsidize outgoing shipping but not incoming and perhaps I should donate the pan to a church! I wrote back that given that it arrived damaged, I thought they should share the cost. They wrote that it was perfect when it left their shop, and I would have had to report to UPS any damage within 1 day if I had wanted any consideration. Oh Chef Depot.... I just want you to know that if it weren't for paying my rent, I would spend my entire paycheck with you. I wandered onto Chef Depot's website after trying to find a few knives to add to my collection on Williams Sonoma...followed by Sur La Table...followed by Cutlery and More...followed by Amazon....annnnd with a brief stop at Macys and a couple of other places mixed in. Not only was I able to find the knife I was scouring the internet for at a cheaper price, shipping was free AND I figured since I saved money, I could toss in an extra gift for myself. Then, upon wandering around the website a little more, I decided my current knife roll was looking dingy and I needed a new one - that, too, was cheaper than the other sites. The website may not be the easiest to navigate, but when I called the warehouse/store/vendor/whatever to ask a question, I was greeted by an INCREDIBLY friendly person who answered all of my questions and we had a nice little chat. Not only that, I ordered my stuff on Monday, and it just arrived no less than an hour ago. I wish I read the reviews here before ordering. I placed an order for a knife block for an international delivery which had a price of $25 for shipping. After placing the order and money taken from my card they emailed be to say the shipping was going to be an extra $20. When I said no thanks, just cancel the order and refund my money they proceeded to tell me that I was an idiot for not reading the fine print that actual shipping charges would be charged and cancelling the order would cost incur a 10% restocking fee even though nothing had been processed and the correct cost was not given upfront! These guys are rude as hell, absolutely no customer service and complete thieves as far as I'm concerned. I suggest avoiding them at all costs! read more

I was given a RA and sent it back Return receipt requested to the address given to me. This cost $12. 2 weeks later I called to check on the refund and was told " we haven't gotten it yet" Today Feb 25 the package came back to me marked "unclaimed, never picked up" Seems like their PO Box is a black hole. These people are USELESS!!! Now letting the credit card company deal with them. 5 minutes after first posting this review I received a call from "Chef Greg" telling me to send it back again. I bought a few items from Chef Depot some years ago without incident. I now wish I had taken a look at two things before I made a recent purchase: (1) the Yelp reviews; and (2) the fine print terms. Unlike virtually every other online retailer these days, Chef Depot does not cover the cost of shipping for items that are returned for good reason, such as the fact the item is a complete fail. I purchased a 'magnetic knife block' that looked much like the trusty Magnablock I bought years ago. Block arrived. I tried to put some of my knives on it. FAIL. I kept trying. FAIL. Turns out this is a cheap knockoff of the Magnabloc I know and love. It's about as magnetic as Donald Trump's hairdo. Contacted Chef Depot and told them my tale of woe, including the fact that I am now repairing a Takeshi Saji damascus santoku (value about $400) that fell off this worthless "magnetic block" and suffered a chipped tip. The response? Hey, we're truly sorry for your loss. "Return it in the original unopened box with all papers, you pay for the shipping for the return, and when we issue a refund we will deduct the shipping cost we incurred for sending the useless item to you." To make things worse, the return shipping cost me twice what it cost Chef Depot to ship here, because the USPS told me CD put the thing in a sawed off priority mail box instead of using a standard size box filled with packing material. By my reckoning, I will be out about $50 for the round trip - assuming i get a refund at all. Now I can wait for my refund. From the sounds of things in other reviews, that's going to be one of those "good luck with that" propositions. I probably will be dealing with my credit card company to dispute the charge, would be my guess. Never, ever again. NEVER. N-E-V-E-R. read more

Wow!! I can't say enough good things about Chef Depot! I was calling around for Boos block (maple butcher block) countertops. Edward at CD gave me a fantastic sale price, free shipping, and walked me through everything I might need to know to care for the counters once they arrive, as well as offering super-helpful tips for cutting and installation. He also did this all as a rush order! Free shipping!! The counters were completed exactly on time and shipped out in a timely manner via FedEx, and arrived exactly as promised - the local FedEx shippers were great to work with as well, making sure the counters came when we were at home, and helping get them up to the door. I ordered knives from Chefs Depot. I decided to change my mind and emailed them to cancel my order. They said it was too late-that it had already shipped. That was a grievous mistake or a big fat lie. The shipping label said they shipped the knives two days AFTER I canceled my order. They said my return required an authorization and they sent one in the form of an email. They wouldn't even send a shipping label. The UPS guy was pissed. Now the bad part. The transaction went through and they charged my card. I got a call the next day from a co-owner "Greg" from a blocked number. He said the prices online were from 2008 and that I would have to split the $280 shipping bill. I asked why it was my problem that that they had the wrong prices online and said they need to honor the terms of the transaction. He got irate with me and canceled the order. They told me untrue information, talked to me like an idiot, and then proceeded to insult every product in the world that they didn't sell as completely inferior. My review is not concerning the quality of the product. I ordered on line a knife case for my daughter who is attending Culinary School. Found one on sale through Chef Depot. Ordered it and paid for it via my credit card for the case and shipping and handling. I also gave special instructions as to leave it either at the office or Post Office as they have had issues with stealing boxes left on the stoop. When my daughter went to pick it up from the PO she was told that she had to pay an additional $5 to pick it up. Granted, $5 is not a lot but I did pay for S/H up front. When I called the company, the gentleman that answered had no answers for that but proceeded to tell me that I received a$50 case for $30 and sorry I had to pay. He told me to write them an email. That was the extent of the help that I received. Well the reason I went on line was to see if I could find a decent price and I understand that I got a deal but I also understand that I paid for that deal up front. I wasn't even offered a $5 coupon or % off of the next order or anything for the extra $$ that was put out. I was more disappointed with the customer service than anything else. I do a lot of online shopping and this was a first. Needless to say, this will not be my first choice in shopping for culinary/kitchen supplies. Just don't need anymore monetary suprises. I expect that when I subtract the funds from my account then that should be it, no underlying costs. By the way I did email them and received no response which is why I came to YELP. I would rate this business a ZERO if I could. I bought some pizza bag warmers and they were the wrong size so I called to get a return number and spoke with one of the owners. He was rude and obnoxious. He said I would have to pay for the shipping to return the boxes and I would also be charged a 30% restocking fee, plus I would have to pay for the item to be shipped back to the place he received them from. First of all that is absolutely ridiculous. Second how can you charge a restocking fee if the items are being sent back to the company, they obviously are not being restocked. While the product I received was good, I would not do business with this company again. Greg (I think a co-owner) was difficult to work with. I found their web site to be deceiving as I bought a standard product from their list but when I called to ask when I would receive it, they said it was a custom order so it would be many weeks. It ended up being over a month. I said it did not say it was custom. He said, if we said that no one would order it. He would not cancel the order (without a penalty fee) even though it was within a few days of the online order and I clearly was not going to get the butcher block piece for several weeks. My mother-in-law purchased a mandolin for me for Christmas from this vendor. As it never arrived, she contacted them, and Ed just sent her to contact FedEx. He also suggested I check with my neighbors to see if they received it! After much runaround with FedEx (busy Christmas season) it turns out Chef Depot put the wrong unit number on the package. On telling him this, he has now said, in multiple emails to me and my mother in law, "It is too long for us to do anything on this side. Once a order is processed, package is shipped and leaves our building, it is the customers responsibility. If you called us within 5 days we could have helped get the driver back there." When I responded that this MIGHT be the case if they sent to the correct address, he again only responded that it's not their responsibility once it leaves their building. We will just be disputing this with Visa, he will not help us at all. Too bad, since my mother in law would buy a hundred things from a good kitchen vendor! Well, I ordered from Chef Depot, and I never received an email saying if they shipped the items. I figured I would wait a week or two to see if I would get a package from them before I called them and asked what was going on. I received the package. Everything I ordered was in the package. The only difference was is that I got a straight Giesser boning knife instead of a curved Giesser boning knife, but I am sure it will work just fine. read more

OMG! How do these people stay in business? I ordered a very pretty (and very expensive) hand pained Olive Oil bottle. It arrive broken in half in an oil soaked box due to a very flimsy packing job and not even bothering to put "fragile" on the box. The bottle had no resemblance to the one on the site either. The very rude person I contacted, owner I think, told me he packed it himself very well and that the bottle being totally different from the photo is because it is hand painted (nothing on their site indicated each bottle is different). After I sent him photos of the disaster he refunded me part of what I paid. When I emailed him asking what about the rest he answered that once the item left their premises it was my property, so I should pay for his shipping cost! Then proceeded to blame me for his losing money on this! And since he sent it by Priority Mail it's insured for more than the cost but he told me when I called the day before that he didn't want to bother and file a claim because the post office wouldn't cover a liquid. This was either a lie, or he knew the post office will take one look at the photos of how shoddily the thing was packed and would deny his claim, or he simply is ignorant of the rules. I buy a lot online and fortunately I never had to deal with a merchant this irresponsible and obnoxious. Needless to say my credit card company will deal with him from now on. read more

I have not even received the product yet, but will not do business with again due to horrible customer service. I attempted to call the customer service phone number for 20 minutes (busy) until I spoke with someone who was beyond condescending and rude. I asked for shipping information, because I had yet to receive this information via email. The man that I spoke with (assuming one of the owners) said that they "don't provide tracking numbers unless it is requested." He also recanted my order and said that I "stole the mandolin slicer" because it cost them only $8 less than what I paid. It seems to me that it is not my job to calculate a proper markup percent for their company. I would have gladly paid what was appropriate. He also went on to say that their "website has been in business before Google." I would prefer to pay 20% more from a reputable company. He disconnected the call with me quickly, most likely so that he could call Google and tell them of his grand achievement in Internet wizardry. read more
