i know we've come to this place in the past and i know we've had (or i've had mixed results) so today's little excursion shouldn't have surprised me. but, it's been a while since we were there and i forgot. first, our server (Vicki) was great. friendly and very outgoing. so it pains me to crap on the experience, but the food (at least mine) sucked. that might be partially on me for ordering breakfast in the mid afternoon, but if you're gonna make it available make it edible. i ordered 2 eggs over medium, corned beef hash, homefries and wheat toast w/ strawberry jam. also, a coffee w/ cream and Splenda. if you've never been here you should know they don't serve traditional "diet" sodas. instead, they server that nasty Zevia garbage. knowing this i ordered coffee. however, i should have known that i'd not get standard sweeteners. they had some other nonsense made with Stevia which is fine, but i could not get a good mix of it in my coffee to make it taste right. it was fine, but not great. our meals came, after what seemed like a small eternity and my food was lukewarm. i suppose the hash was warm but it was on a 2nd plate and the stuff on the main plate wasn't cold, yet, but fairly close. i should have said something but i was hungry - at least for the moment. the corned beef hash was basically homefries w/ shredded beef and grilled onions. honestly, i was expecting the stuff from a can and was kinda disappointed but tried it and the meat was good - where it wasn't full of fat. i picked most of the onions out and tried to make the best of it. my eggs and homefries (on the other plate) though, were not hot and trying to eat not hot eggs is gross. they also weren't cooked to my liking (which was why i ordered them over-medium - so i wouldn't have to eat undercooked egg whites. c'est la vie. the toast and jam were great. Danielle liked her pickle-chicken sandwich and seemed disappointed that i don't want to go back, so i'll probably have to relent at some point and just get French Toast and go into diabetic shock. oooohh, i forgot. i also ordered a cup of the corn chowder (soup of the day). it wasn't great and corn was the least plentiful ingredient in it. i'd call it more of a potato and bacon chowder w/ corn casually tossed in. read more

Big party of 16 for dinner. Probably biggest they could seat together. Service was good. Server was fast, food came out in waves since they have small kitchen & only a couple small hiccups. Food was mostly good. I didn't love the coleslaw (apple vinegar style) but they let me swap for another side. Burgers, salmon, chicken paprikas, dinner gyro salad & county fried steak were well received. Fresh cut fries were super delish - like the fair. White bean chicken chili was a good special soup. Value for most was pretty decent except the burrito bowls. Price too high for the size & 2 of our guests didn't love the burrito. Good visit overall! read more

A recent review describes this small cafe - Check Please - as a gem. I'd say that comes fairly close. A friend who lives in this metro area is always willing to make the drive to Grafton, OH to eat here. And that includes bumbling down these quasi-country roads to get here. I had always assumed that Check Please did a breakfast-lunch business. They do, but they stay open for all three meals, closing at 8:00 p.m. I am impressed with how they navigate covering the traditional basics for these meals in addition to coming up with some more creative menu items. However, they get their name from these paper checklists on the table, along with colored pencils and paper tablecloths, on which you can customize breakfast platters, sandwiches, and salads, at the very least. (Some people will obviously want to scribble on the paper table cloth, too.) And, on top of this, they come up with some innovative spins on home made traditional desserts, should you have room for that. Every now and then, you should make room! This is more than a restaurant in that it approaches a cafe-bistro style even though its exterior definitely looks more "mom and pop." The food at Check Please is excellent. The ingredients that go into what they make appear to be top drawer, both fresh and locally sourced. The service is also excellent - customer focused, amicable, and effective. If you have a refillable drink, they will see to it that it is refilled as you go along. The pricing is fair. You would not expect to find an eatery like Check Please on a two-lane road south of the Ohio Turnpike. The other thing that's funny is that there will be an "interesting" intersection of people here, since this is at the edge of a metro area, in a small town with farms around it, and near Oberlin College, which always makes the list of the 10 or 20 most liberal small colleges in America. Lena Dunham, who I dislike, speaks to that and is an alumna. What this means is that its customers will span a wide gamut of ideologies. Get off the turnpike and drive down to Check Please. Walked in to a small wait on a Monday morning. Cute place. Small mom and pop with an all woman staff. You can here talking from the kitchen which is a little annoying. Background music isn't exactly breakfast music. Coffee can out and it was very good. They have a small sweetener selection so bring your own. Cream is standard. They have a cool select your own write in menu. Food came out and was little disappointed. Was supposed to be a grilled tomato not a couple of pathetic slices with pepper. Also an avocado for a ana dditional charge was a few small slices for extra. Eggs weere under cooked. Bacon they don't know how to cook. Very underwhelming. Check Please is an absolute gem! My mom has fallen in love with this place, so I'm there with her at least once a month, and try something new every time. There is nothing I haven't loved and I always struggle to choose! Even with a pretty big menu and rotating monthly specials, everything comes out fresh and flavorful with generous portions. Don't sleep on the house-made dressings. All of the servers are incredibly sweet and service is fast and attentive. Have visited here twice. No complaints. Service was good and the food was okay. If one thing we didn't like it was that prices seemed just a little high for neighborhood eatery. This is little Grafton Ohio, not downtown Cleveland or Chicago where rents are high and taxes are higher. However, won't discourage anyone from visiting for a bite to eat. Having said all of that, we had to cancel our credit card as we got a call next day saying someone was trying to use our card number at a gas station 50 miles away, but fraud department got an alert and transaction was declined. The service here is friendly. However, the food isn't good. It wasn't bad, but the taste just isn't there. Additionally, the portions are very small for the price that you pay for each of the menu items. The ingredients used in the dishes don't really match the price either. Just as an example to illustrate, if your dish includes mushrooms, there'll be very few mushrooms. Expand this out to each and every item, it just leaves you wanting more. 4th time we tried eating here and again a horrible experience. Their most popular dish, paprikosh, was runny orange grease with dry chicken chunks and no spetzels. The cook said their was so I had to stick a fork in the chicken to show waitress there was none. And it tasted like toilet water. So ordered pancakes instead. They charged $.99 for a tiny tub of extra dressing for the salad, which we weren'told.. Then they charge $.99 for the sour cream for the paprikosh that was sent back. And another $.99 for an extra pancake syrup which as needed as a minimum. The Salisbury steak was disgusting. The gravy was just grease, not any attempt to make gravy. Made me sick all night. NOTHING WAS DONE TO SHOW CONCERN OR GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE. I'm tired of people that must eat crap at home that say they could eat the shit they call food at this place. I placed a phone order at this quaint little breakfast diner in Grafton. I was pleasantly surprised but the charms and kitchy ambiance it had to offer. They offer your traditional breakfast foods along with healthier options like sides or fruit as well as avocado toast. They also have a soup and sandwich menu as well as traditional entrees. I appreciate that they offer dine in, delivery, or pick up. I ordered the avocado toast with a side of home fries and sausage patty's. The avocado toast did not come with butter or anything on it which would have been nice and the avocado was over ripe slices. The home fries were sliced potatoes with skin which was a nice surprise. We definitely weren't disappointed. While the service was "leisurely" probably due to a customer rush, we had plenty of time to check out the menu. We particularly liked the checklist option to customize sandwiches which we haven't seen before. My wife had a chicken sandwich, made to order and I had a gyro. Both were very tasty. This place used to be good, and we have enjoyed coming here since their opening. The last couple times have been average, at best. But we thought we'd give it just one more shot. We ordered 2 strip steaks, with 2 sides. HUGE MISTAKE! They were so tough and absolutely FULL of fat and grisly. I sent mine back, my husband hacked away at his, and ate about 4 or 5 bites. I ordered a wrap with the garlic mayo on the side. The mayo was on it and the bacon was dripping in grease. I took 2 bites and that was it. We were charged 34$ for my drink and they charged us 1/2 for the wrap, and charged us individually for our sides. WOW. I have work 25+ years in the service industry, and that is NOT customer service. We did not eat! Just a garbage way to treat loyal customers. Should have comp'ed our meals. Now we won't be back, and will tell everyone we know about this awful place. My 13 year old son and I stopped in for breakfast together for the 1st time and we waited to be seated for a view minutes. Once seated the server was friendly and explained the menu to us. We enjoyed the food as it was delicious and the portions were perfect for us both. Those of us who have landed here know that Grafton is hardly a booming culinary scene. When it comes to a quick lunch your options are not a many. We have ordered from Check Please many times since the pandemic started and at first it started out pretty good. That is why when things started to go bad I gave them multiple times to make up for it. It never happened. The last three times this was my experience with Check Please. 1) Nearly choked on a twisty tie that somehow made its way into my salad. Called to complain and got a "sorry about that". That's it. I said ok that's fine. I don't feel a places owes you something for every little slip up even though it would be considered good customer service. 2) ordered their zoodle Alfredo with chicken. For delivery. The chicken was cooked to death, couldn't even be cut with a knife. I called to ask if I could get my money back they offered to make a new order instead. Great right? They're righting their wrong! Not really. They sent the delivery driver out an hour later with chicken. By then of course the zoodles where cold. I kind of figured they might remake the whole thing. I was wrong. 3) I ordered a wrap for lunch and received the atrocity pictured here for about 14 bucks because bacon counts as double meat. Listen, I am not cheap and don't mind paying for something that is worth it, but this poor wrap was really sad at any price. That is one lonely slice of Turkey on that thing and I don't even know if one side had the bacon I paid extra for. I have been disappointed too many times. I can't go back again.
