Very clean. They have bikes, horseshoes, tennis and beach volleyball courts, pool, hot tub, great coffee, good breakfast... and rules on rules. At check in, you get the run down like you just came home from college and your mom still treats you like a high school kid. Very specific about dog rooms. I got here and immediately thought "this place is amazing how is it so low rated?" Now I know. I can hear every footstep and conversation of neighbors, the walls are so thin? Might be minor but the charger plug-in whatever theyre called are in the most annoying spots. Also, dead bugs in the corner of the bedroom? They werent alive but where did they come from? (Picture attached) They also were so plainly out there im surprised they weren't cleaned, if they were missed theres probably bugs EVERYWHERE. We got a dog friendly hotel because we have a dog, get there they say our room allows no dogs and theres no other rooms to change to, after talking for awhile they call the owners and they make an "exception" for us. The last time I stayed here was about 12 years ago and honestly I won't be back for a third time. I could have stayed up town in a way nicer room for less than the 210$ I payed for 1 night here. I'm not sure how this king ocean view room is considered remodeled but it is definitely outdated and dirty! The only thing nice about this room is the view. The shower water is either scalding hot or freezing cold, there is no in between. The carpet is at least 40 years old and the paint in the bathroom is falling off the walls onto the dirty floor. The sink is so low you have to bend down to use it. The man who checked me in was super nice and made claims that I was getting one of their best rooms. If this is one of their best, I'd hate to see one that's less than. Do yourself a favor and stay in town for less money and a better room. read more

We were after a nice getaway. We decided to stay in Longbeach since we never had. Online this place looked fantastic. Kudos to the photographer. Even though the place is very dated it was ok. The problem I had with this place was the lack of ocean view. We made the assumption that because the website said Oceanside, that we would actually be able to see it. To my disappointment you could see a lot of grass. We were on the top floor and could only see a sliver of the water. I do not recommend this place for a beach trip. This place is a tough cookie to crack... the staff is SO nice and helpful and the location is fantastic. The facilities are a mixed bag. I really liked this place but it's a real hit or miss what type of room you receive even though they run the same rates generally. My understanding is that these are a sort of timeshare and when not being used by the owners they are rented as regular hotel rooms. Which is MUCH better than airbnb's where it's your duty to start laundry or do dishes etc even though you're paying for the space lol. These run as standard hotel so you just get to enjoy and leave it when you check out. We paid for an updated condo at ground level. It was SUPER convenient to have walk out to beach access without going downstairs. The space was perfectly acceptable but for the rate it's a tough sell. It is large, two bathrooms and three sweepable surfaces. One was comfortable. They don't really tell you how it's laid out so you don't know until you arrive it's not like two beds in the room or two rooms it's the bedroom with one bed and the living room with the couch and a pull out side bed so most folks are all out in the open space. The kitchen is basic, the bathrooms we very old and clean enough but nothing about the space was really a shining win or example of what the rates are. I will say I think this more standard for coastal rentals for us normal humans not shelling out 1000's of dollars for a rental so while average I would say compared to other hotels it's a little sub par. All that said there aren't a lot of clean new options on the coast around normal price so it's not awful and I will still likely stay again and hopefully get a slightly nicer room next time since they are all different. Mostly because the hosts are just SO lovely. And they are one of the few places that has an easy pet option that isn't crazy expensive. read more

I'm not sure how this place is rated so high. We paid almost $300 a night for a king bed/pet friendly room. Upon arrival, I immediately noticed how filthy the entire place is. Cleaning rooms at this hotel was my very first "real" job, and not only is the entire hotel outdated, it's just generally FILTHY. There was literal dog poop all over the otherwise stained carpet in our room, and visible "splatter" on the walls. I called the front desk and was immediately moved into a room a few doors down. Our new room was a little bigger, but still gross. The floor was dirty. Splatter on the walls, caulking missing from the tub, and a resident spider living in the bathroom. I really didn't want to move again. With 2 dogs in tow, it is a pain in the butt. We also received 0 maid service with our 2 night stay. 0. Do not stay here. read more

No wait to check in, but the guy working front desk was not friendly at all. How hard is it to be pleasant and smile? We mentioned that we read online that most rooms have been updated and even read reviews about this. We asked if we could possibly be put in one of the updated rooms. Employee lied to us, saying "the kinks" were still being worked out with the new rooms. During our stay I literally walked past "upgraded rooms" that had been checked out of and were being cleaned by housekeeping! Our room was terribly dated and the carpet was nasty. Bathroom floor looked like it was not cleaned before our arrival and I cannot believe they only provide 1-ply tp. Seriously?! Definitely not worth the price we paid of almost $200/night. There were holes and stains on the wall and we received zero maid service while there. Had to go to front desk for more towels etc. The continental breakfast is a nice little bonus, nothing fancy but plenty of choices and enough to fill you up for the morning. Staff did a good job of keeping breakfast items stocked. The older gentleman working front desk when we checked out was friendly. We spent the night here, they had very friendly staff and beautiful view of the ocean. Our family used their complimentary bikes and rode around the dunes. They also returned my husbands wedding ring after he lost it in the pool! We will definitely come back, wonderful trip! read more

I'll be back! Quiet, off the main road in Long Beach, but not too far from downtown. Beach view with a short walk to the beach (paved and sand); everything the site promised. Lots of parking too. The staff was really accommodating; it's got to be difficult to keep things running and happy during COVID restrictions. This is a pet friendly place, with a pool; but I didn't bring my dog or use the pool. Room was clean and a gorgeous view of the beach, waves crashing lulled me to sleep every night. Quiet place too, even though I saw lots of families with kids and guests with pets. Coffee maker, microwave, mini fridge in room. Lots of towels (no beach towels; I brought my own but they may have provided if asked). Saw a couple of grazing deer outside my room and a cute Douglas squirrel on my balcony. :) COVID Info: No daily housekeeping if more than one night stay, but if you need anything extra just call the front desk. Check in was simple and the front desk attendant was friendly and super personable. We had an issue with a fire alarm going off late at night however there was no fire and we were able to go back to sleep fairly quickly. The main concern was there was no hot water from the time we checked in until the next morning when I was trying to get myself and my three grandchildren ready for the day. I was told that they had maintenance workers on it however it took too long and we were unable to get our showers. When I approached the manager at the front desk when turning in my key I was well taken care of by her and the general manager who was also on site at the time. They were very helpful, understanding, and accommodating and sorry for the inconvenience. We look forward to coming back and giving them another chance. read more

I came to this place with my dog fleeing a historic heat wave in Portland and Seattle. I was exhausted after living through a day of all time record high 108 degree temperatures and a sleepless night in my un-air-conditioned home where temperatures never went below 92. When I arrived there was a long line of very hot, exhausted, and sometimes impatient & cranky folks from areas hit by the hellish temperatures waiting to check in. The front desk staff were all amazing. They worked hard, professionally, and were pleasant and accommodating. The room was spacious, clean, and opened out onto the ocean dune area. There was a large grassy pet area with plenty of shade trees. I would personally like to thank and commend the front desk and cleaning staff for a great job under very difficult circumstances, and will definitely be returning with my pet. read more

Unbelievable the way this place treated me. I booked more than a month in advance. The week before my trip, they sent several emails to me saying that due to construction, I will no have no balcony access. Bummer, since i paid extra for the ocean view room, but no big deal. Then at 12:31 the DAY of, after I had already driven 200 miles to get here, they tell booking.com that they can't honor my reservation. I arrived to check in, cause surely this was a mistake, cause construction doesn't just up and start all of the sudden. You wouldn't screw your customers over like that. So I arrive, the girl at the counter sees my name and reservation. I am filling out the paper work and then a lady comes from the office and says "booking.com should have contacted you!" Though this diamond is a little rough, it still shines. Honestly when we first arrived to our room (we were on the hotel side) I was disappointed. There were some shingles missing from the roofing & we were handed keys as opposed to a key card as we have all become accustom to nowadays. The lock on our door was rusty & it felt like the key was going to break because you had to turn it so hard. The room was outdated & the deck looked a little sketchy. With all that said, once we settled in & saw all of the beauty around us, we had such an amazing & relaxing trip. I would highly recommend this place if you are on a budget but want to have a nice family trip. The pool was perfect, the staff were all incredibly friendly, the view was relaxing but the best part was the fact that you are right on a beautiful path along & to the beach great for a bike ride with the kids. It was such a quick & easy walk down the path from our room to the beach, even with a stroller & our gear. The beach itself was amazing & not overly crowded. The hotel has a sand volleyball court, tether ball, multiple picnic tables & bbq's. Before we arrived we expected an older more 80s vibe room. We were completely shocked when we arrived. The updated room was beautiful. We had our German Shepard with us, therefore, we had a pet room. The room smelled clean and you'd never know it was a pet-friendly room. Our room was on the first floor and came with 2 full bathrooms, a separate bedroom, and a pull-out couch in the spacious living room area. The kitchen was fully equipped with most of the kitchen equipment you would need. It came with a conventional oven, microwave, dishwasher washer, and a garbage disposal. Fully stocked with dishes, cups, silverware, and all the cooking pans and mixing bowls you'd need. This room had it all except a can opened, but not a big deal. The towels were very soft and not the cheap towels hotels use. We were in room 119 and every morning at around 8:30 a very loud buzzer went off and scared the crap out of us. Not sure what that was about, but it would have been a good heads-up. The continental breakfast was on point!! They had fresh bagels, cream cheese, yogurt, and danishes and for hot items, they had biscuits and gravy, omelets, sausage, and oatmeal with all the fixings. Hands down the best continental breakfast I've had in a while. The staff is friendly and everything was clean. I wished that the hot tub would be open for adults from 6 am to 9 am or some kind of hot tub hours in the morning. I do appreciate the, only adults-only hot tub times" but I feel like the hot tub was still packed from 5 pm to 9 pm. We plan on staying here every time we come back. Great place! read more

Such amazing staff and service. We have stayed here twice and have loved it each time. I lost my wedding ring (I took it off in my sleep) so I called them to see if they had found it. They had already stripped the bedding in the room but the staff went through the bin piece by piece to look for it. They found it and are sending it to me. I'm giving these guys five stars based on what they are; an inexpensive, indecently run hotel with a rustic feel and a super friendly staff. There really isn't anything fancy about this place, except for the amazing views from each of the balconies, and there is a good sized pool along with a pretty cool lounge with a tv, game room and juke box (that only seems to play one song; but that adds to the quirkiness of this place). I think quirky is the key word here. I know that isn't everyone's idea of Nirvana, but Long Beach is nothing if not quirky. We were greeted by the friendliest, most helpful front desk person who had a great sense of humor. She advised us of all the great places to eat and gave us coupons for many of them. We had a great time while we were here, and loved hanging out on our balcony, listening to the ocean. My favorite part about this place was the customer service. When we mentioned something about the beds being hard, the manager (owner?) apologized and provided us with cushy mattress pads. They helped, and even if they didn't, the effort put forth was totally awesome. We have decided this will be our go-to stay place in Long Beach. Give these guys a try! read more

Just had a great weekend in Long Beach and stayed at Chautauqua Lodge. They are in the process of shining up this great place to get away. From new paint to bringing in the Lightship Restaurant (great food) they are making a concerted effort to upgrade the facilities. The staff is great and extremely accommodating. Ample parking and great views from the 2nd or 3rd level. Close to the Discovery Trail for walking/running or biking and as close to the beach as you can get in Long Beach. The biggest bonus is that you are away from the crowded center of town but can easily walk the 14 blocks if you want. As soon as the remainder of the remodeling is done, I'll be giving it a 5-star rating! read more

My wife, kids and I have stayed here a total of 10 days the past two years and couldn't be happier. Clean rooms that smell fresh. Close to the ocean. Large pool and wonderful hot tub. We come the week before the 4th, which means the grounds crew is busy freshening up the place ahead of the holiday weekend. To our benefit, it also means low vacancy and access to the beach, pool and hot tub nearly to ourselves. The staff is friendly and accessible. In 2014, we stayed in a normal room with one king bed. This year, with the addition of a new kid, we upgraded to a suite that includes a kitchenette and 2nd bedroom / bathroom. Very pleased with the size and amenities of the suite. Perfect for travelers with multiple guests. Both rooms have Flat screen tvs. Main room has a new leather couch that doubles as a pullout bed. There is a groupon that runs most of the year / offseason, as well as various deals. Last year was our first visiting Long Beach. I'd always gone to Ocean Shores growing up, but the Chitauqua Lodge meets our families needs and more. I encourage them to continue updating the space. Old reviews are full of complaints about superficial and functional shortcomings, however, those have seemingly bend addressed and we've had nothing but a positive experience so far. We plan to come back next year and make this a yearly event. read more

I stayed at this place a year ago and thought they were remodeling. The lobby had bare drywall and there were signs of unfinished construction. I returned last weekend and it was the same! Deferred maintenance everywhere. It's sad because the rooms have such wonderful views and it's just falling apart. We stayed in #214 and it was a filthy dump. Very spacious, though, with free wifi! I pulled out the hide-a-bed and a bunch of old, dry couch food came flying out. The mattress had a nice big stain right in the middle. I didn't want to walk on the nasty old carpet with my bare feet. The gas fireplace is out of order and looks like it has been for a long time. The layout of is nice and with some changes it could be a really cool unit! read more

Even though our room was a time warp to 1960 everything functioned well. The kids thought it smelled like grandmas. Although, the beds and sheets were great! The staff was happy and thorough. The pool was fun but a little cold the hot tub was nice and hot. And the room used real keys! The walk to the beach was easy. Not close enough to the main drag to walk so plan on driving into town. We thought the water tasted weird so we bought bottled water at Sid's. The coffee they provide was yummy and the pot definitely made it hot. Stayed here for an event weekend that was the last one they were hosting in town because the host was no longer going to be able to host. My significant other and our friend stayed better before and forewarned me that it "wasn't the nicest in town" and "wasn't the best they've been in." But goodness I can see why the reviews are the way they are. We stayed in room 240. Pros: you get to see the beach (shrug shoulders, you don't really get to see it but you do get to be very close. The dunes get in the way of the direct look) Check in process was easy Cons: the smell (old, musty, dank) The walls (dirty, scuffed, clear signs of "repair") The fixtures and furniture are out of a time warp and not a good one The beds were pretty dirty for something that was cleaned. (Sandra and Pam [named in the 'who cleaned the room' sheet] really need to be retrained, but again this isn't the nicest in town) There are 2 beds in this room. One has a stained and dirty bedskirt and the other had dried toothpaste!!! on the warm blanket made INTO the bed. When we complained about it they sent someone to the room who, instead of making the bed like every other hotel I have ever been in, asked if we wanted to give him the other blanket. Which would have been fine if he then didn't turn around before were could answer, demand to see what we were talking about, question us about it to confirm it wasn't paint (it shouldn't matter if it was soap residue the staff made it into the bed and paint isn't any better), and then cussed in front of us and left. Again I can see why people are leaving the reviews they have They do allow dogs but you are unable to leave them in your room unless you are swimming. This is inconvenient on so many parts as you are unable to take a meal or run an errand without your pet. It would really be difficult if I had a meeting or actual business to do and needed to leave my travel companion in the room. The stairs are also an issue. My dog does not like them which nor do I as they are uneven in both depth and height. For the second night we left all day until the evening and hoped that the staff would have come in and attempted to make the beds or refilled the amenities. Unfortunately that was too much to ask for. Heard that they were going to be fixing up the place but apparently that is the best rumor ever since, but the reviews of course, has been said for years. read more

I could rate this place any thing from 1 star to 5, depending on which criteria I used! Having stayed hear and reread the reviews, I would say they are all pretty accurate. How can you say that, you ask? Well, it depends on what is important to you. As we were getting our stuff up to our condo, I joked to my wife that everyone else checking in had 7 kids and as many dogs. While I was exaggerating a lot on this, if you are a family on a budget and want to bring along the dogs with you on a vacation to the beach, this is your place. The lodge suites usually sleep 6 and dogs are welcome (I think there is an extra fee). The place is not perfect by far, but is cheap enough for a family to vacation and not have to live in a tent. For me, I gave up on camping a long time ago. Staying here felt somewhat like camping. Yes, you really can hear just about everything that occurs around you in these rooms. The worn out furniture and beds are better than sleeping on an air mattress and sitting in a folding chair around the campfire, but the resulting back ache is similar. Unlike another reviewer, our TV was excellent. Maybe we got the lucky unit. But most everything else was worn and pretty tired looking. I agree with another reviewer that the front desk staff are great. But interacting with them accounts for only about 2% of the time at the property, so that can go only so far. No plans on coming back, but if it was the only choice, I might decide to go "camping" again. read more

Really enjoyed the weekend at Chautauqua Lodge. This is a diamond coming out of the rough. It has been going through a renovation and there are many more improvements coming but what really stands out is the service, attention to detail, handling special requests. Some of the units have been completely remodeled, others are in progress. We stayed in one that had a very nice kitchen, remodeled bathroom, 2 comfortable beds and a very comfortable pull out couch (nice surprise). The views from the unit are stunning, you can see up and down the coast. Nice pool and jacuzzi, and a new restaurant will be opening there in 3 weeks that looks amazing. In addition, it is on the Discovery Coast trail so you can bring your bikes and ride for miles. Only a few minutes walk to a beautiful beach. Please note though, I am rating this a 4 based on an older beach town. This isn't the Riviera Maya but if you are looking for a wonderful, cozy, quiet (but a mile away from Town) Washington beach experience....this is the one. read more

As far as tired motels go this one has a great view of the beach and convenient to access the discovery trail. Staff is kind and courteous but I can't say anything redeeming about the guests that inhabit the place. "Quiet time" is non existent despite their policies. Barking dogs, loud music and drunkards permeate the grounds and the decades of cigarette smoke and weed that is shellacked between coats of paint. Fireworks were going off on the beach and dogs from every room were barking. I couldn't mask the noise with ear plugs or headphones and because there isn't air conditioning unit or a fan available you have to sleep with the patio door open in the summer. I'd pick a tent over this joint again. read more

Had a recent quick road trip to Long Beach and stayed at the Chautauqua Lodge. I hadn't been to this particular hotel in years, they have since updated many of their rooms into 'condos', which is a nice update....they've combined what use to be two separate hotel rooms into much larger 'condo' units, with separate bedroom, kitchen, and living room with sleeper couch....nice!! Very quick easy access to the beach and Discovery Trail, great for bicycling! Nice views of ocean and beach from upper floor balconies, and pet friendly, which is a must for us. This isn't a high-end luxury type of place, but it's a comfortable decent place to stay, and serves the purpose of being a 'home-base' for us at Long Beach. Thumbs-up for Chautauqua Lodge and their condo updates....we'll definitely be coming back!! read more

The good: -Large rooms -Close beach access -Restaurant in walking distance -Pet friendly -The staff was very, very nice The bad: - The beds are so uncomfortable! - The couch is old, and fabric, so you can only imagine how it dirty it must be. -HORRIBLE to NO cell or internet services. They don't even have dial-up options. -Time warp! Outdated is an understatement - Run down, dirty (it's dirty because of how old, and outdated it is, but they do a good job of cleaning otherwise), and dusty, smelly, old, and even rusty areas in the bathroom, is more like it. -Tight parking in some areas -Blind corners around the staircases, so be careful, especially be careful of not startling other peoples dogs when you round the corner. - You can HEAR EVERYTHING your neighbors do, so earplugs are a must. - TV's are SMALL, OLD, and no way of playing DVD's Here is the strange part... I'd absolutely go again if there weren't any other options, I wouldn't refuse another visit, if it was my only option; I'd bring my own bedding, but I'd be ok with going there again. I was able to get a room at a great price $88 or so I thought! The beds were Hard and Very uncomfortable! The place was very old and outdated. You could hear the people next door and above you making it hard to sleep. The fireplace was out of order. The wifi didn't work in the rooms only in the lobby. The door didn't deadbolt only locked regular. I felt more like it was a $40 a night room not worth the money I paid for sure. Only positive I could give it was it seemed clean. Overall, I'd do it again. Throw in a groupon and you've got a hell of a deal for a weekend beach getaway. The place is dog friendly. Our room smelled a little like wet dog upon entering. Not sure if the two were related... A shampoo of the rug might go a long way. The bathrooms were totally fine, and so were the linens (I've had better at a Raddison, worse at a Sheraton... FWIW). One of the beds in our suite was fine, the other very noticeably broken in. But the comforter (and for that matter, the matching curtains) are in DIRE need of replacement. Please, please, please get rid of these things... the rooms aren't that bad but these things look 20 years old. Brought my apple TV for late night movie watching, but neither of the TVs had an HDMI connector. No biggie on that part of the room for us anyway, we were there for the beach. I see that the reviews of this place are not updated, and that no one recently has come on here to give their recent trip here a review. So I will start. We were only here overnight, and stayed in a room on the bottom floor. Walked in, and the room was super clean. The carpet, was really cushy. Really nice to walk on. No stains or anything. I really liked that. There was no small refrigerator or microwave, or coffee pot; there was a coffee machine and coffee and tea in the room, but couldn't find the glass pot that went with it. They did have a hair dryer in the room. Loose, not connected to the wall, which is odd since it could easily be stolen. Took a shower, and despite the old, un-fancy shower nozzle, it gave off a great powerful water force that felt so nice. Everything about this place was clean and awesome. The view from the bottom floor was pleasant. Can't see the ocean, but the view of the tall grass swaying in the distance, and the colorful clouds in the sunset was nice enough for my husband and I. If we wanted to really see the sunset, we could have walked out the back door and two minutes up the path that was almost literately, right outside our door, and we would have hit the beach. It was so nice that that was so close. There was a nice amount of clearing in the back that your kids could go play ball or catch and they would be close enough by that you wouldn't have to worry about them. Didn't visit the pool, though we wanted too, but no swim trunks means no fun for us. Didn't visit the restaurant, though it would have been nice too have done that if we had more time to visit. Its right in the parking lot, which is nice and convenient, but cannot comment on the food. The game room did look retro, and not the best kind. I believe that they have took everyone's reviews into consideration and has added, and changed a bunch about this place, but I feel like they still have a little more to go on it. I don't know what their goal is as a business, if they see themselves, or even want themselves to be a higher end hotel, but updating some of the most looked over features might well put them on their way. But for the time spent, for people who only had a day to get away, it certainty wasn't bad. My husband and I like to save money on vacation by bringing our own food and cooking it there or cooking it at home and bringing it along, and storing in the fridge for later, so to not see a small refrigerator or a stove was a bit discouraging. But for someone who is in town to visit family, and will be well fed elsewhere, and just need a place to lay their head down at night with nothing fancy, this is the place for you. I used to swim at the Chautauqua Lodge as a child in the same pool that is there today. Decades later, it still stands as an affordable option to take your family to enjoy the beach. That said, I'm not sure why people expect some 5 star luxury hotel and leave bad reviews. DId you think for $100 a night you were staying at the Holiday Inn?! HA! The Chautauqua is an older place and something is always in need of updating. I could tell that several things (like windows, decks, etc) were recently updated. I thought that our room was basic, but it was clean. We were on the 2nd floor and you couldn't see the Ocean much over the dunes, but we did see some deer and enjoyed the short walk to the beach. We swam in the pool, which was full of other families and my kiddo had a great time. I can only think of two negative things to say about the stay: the bath towels were thin and small, and the bed was too firm for my liking. I would definitely stay here again. If you are just looking for a basic room and want to enjoy the beach, the Chautauqua is a great choice. read more

First things first, front desk staff is AMAZING! The lady (I can't remember her name!) who checked us in was able to get us early check in!! She was very thorough with explaining all the charges and fees. She took our vehicle info, which I assume was to make sure other people weren't staying there then what us and other guests said. I found that quite comforting, just in the sense it made us feel safer leaving the car in the lot while we went to the beach. Second, this location is a tad far from the main part of town, but that made it a quiet and serene stay in my opinion. All we could here were the ocean waves coming from atop the dunes in between our room and the ocean. The grounds include a volley ball court, indoor pool and hot tub, ice machines and vending machines for any late night snack cravings! The room: Look, it's not the ritz Carlton! It's a little shabby from the outside, and a little dated inside with the head broad and mirror, but it was clean!!!! I've stayed in much higher priced hotels/motels and been disgusted before. Not this place! The maid service was fast too! We left to go have breakfast and came back about an hour later, beds were made, towels were replaced, more coffee put in the basket next to the coffee maker, that was awesome! You could tell they had vacuumed and cleaned the mirror! Very impressed! In vegas you're lucky if maid service gets to your room before midnight! I would recommend for anyone to stay here! If you're not a Kardashian and need 24 hour assistance!! Lovely place to have my birthday get away, and I WILL stay again next time long beaches soft sand call my toes in!!!!!
