If you haven't ridden the Ducks, you're in for a real treat. This is a must do in Chattanooga. This is great for a date or for the family, especially if you have kids. Everyone will have a great time! You show up, buy your tickets and wait for a DUKW (pronounced "Duck). A DUKW is a six-wheeled amphibious vehicle built for the military during WWII. The Chattanooga Ducks have several of these and they take you on a brief driving tour through Chattanooga on the way to the Tennessee River, where you go on a longer boat tour featuring Chattanooga history. Don't be concerned if you show up 10 minutes before your tour starts and see a DUKW driving away... they have more and they run several at each scheduled time. Our driver was very funny and knows Chattanooga history well. He knew a lot of trivia facts that made our tour especially interesting and entertaining. I've lived in Chattanooga for nearly five years and learned a lot from this tour. It was really fun during the transition from land to river, where we headed down the boat ramp at full speed and splashed into the water. Some people got a little wet, but not too much (hint, if you don't want to get wet, sit on the starboard side of the boat and don't sit at the stern). I sat in the front row on the starboard side. At 6'4", my legs were a little cramped, but I was able to sit sideways and stretch out a little. Not many of the seats will really accommodate someone who is tall, so be aware of that. The tour lasts a little over an hour and the driver talks fast, presumably because he has a lot of information to give to you in that hour. The captain/driver let several of the kids drive the boat up and down river. I could tell they had a great time doing that. Going into I had a so-so expectation of what this would be like. Wowzer, was I blown away! It's about an hour long. The guide (Capt. Steve) was one of the coolest people you will ever meet! He is also very knowledgeable about the city of Chattanooga and it's history. It is well worth 30$ a person. If you are visiting or even from around here it's a great experience ! We did the duck boat tour today and I have to say, I'm a big fan!! My husband and I took my parents, my aunt, and our two small children and it was a hit for everyone. Captain Rob was our tour guide and he was amazing. He made it fun for the kids, while still holding the attention of the adults with lots of really cool Chattanooga history. My husband and I frequent Chattanooga since it's so close to home (from ATL) and yet we never knew any of this history! We also had never toured the city from the river, which was pretty cool. My mom almost chickened out (not a fan of boats) and my dad was a bit hesitant too and they were both giving rave reviews after we got off the boat. My dad even stopped to chat with Cpt. Rob for a bit! **PRO TIP** Groupon has a deal for two tickets for $45, versus the normal $30/person. Either way it's worth the money, but who doesn't love a good discount. read more

This was great! This is our 1st time here, and I'm so glad we did the Ducks! I saw the tours on Groupon, and thought why not? The tour leaves every 2 hours and takes about 1hr 30 mins to complete. Our guide was VERY knowledgeable about Chattanooga. If we passed it, he had some tidbit on it. We cruised through Chattanooga, and down into the Tennessee River and back. Most of the time we were on water, which is ok by me! It was very informative and fun. Towards the end, the captain even took volunteers to drive the duck! It was really great. Steve the guide was awesome. It was my first boat/car ride, but won't be my last. Tip -- even if the weather is great, take a jacket. The air off the water got really cold in April, even with temps over 80. Went with a new friend, kept us busy oohing and aahing over the local sites. Seats were comfier than I expected. Oh.. and as far as surprises go... this thing is really tall. Be prepared to climb up a steep ladder about 8 feet to get to your seats in the boat/car. If you have mobility issues with your knee, in a wheelchair, or rather large, you may have some difficulties. Maybe call ahead just to confirm their options. It could be the one I rode was not their handicap accessible one. I'm looking forward to doing this again, even with my bad knees. I'll just make it one of my first activities when I return. read more

The Chattanooga Ducks tour was a great start to our weekend in town. I made a reservation online a few days in advance. The confirmation said to arrive 15 minutes early and we did, but there were a couple stragglers so we had to wait for them to arrive. Our tour at 6:00 on a Saturday was sold out, but most of the other time slots had openings. The tour spends a pretty short amount of time on the city streets before heading to the river. Our driver gave a lot of info about the town's history and attractions. He talked about the vehicles, how they were used in the war and how they convert from land to water vehicles. The big excitement was the ramp down to the river. There's a bit of a splash and lots of cheering involved. Our time on the water was really pretty slow-paced and relaxing. On the way back the driver gave some of the passengers (of all ages) a chance to drive the duck, which is of course a memorable experience. My whole family really enjoyed the tour. I was really glad we chose the Ducks and would highly recommend it to my friends visiting town. read more

A duck is a vehicle then can go from land right into the water. First part of the tour is a small ride through town but the best part is the time spent in the water. Especially when you go down the ramp really fast into the water. Nice little thrill ride for the older adults and young kids. The captain was nice to let the kids drive the boat which added to their enjoyment. The tour along the river was nice. You do have to be able to climb up the ladder to get on the boat, and my choice of seating in the front right hand corner was a bad one. The engine was hot and my knees had no where to go so I was uncomfortable during the ride. Next time I would choose to sit elsewhere. Otherwise informative and fun tour and worth taking. read more

I confess it was a half price Groupon that made us get tickets for the Chattanooga Ducks. But I also know you can never go wrong getting out on the water on a trip. You always get a different perspective of a city from the water and it held true on this trip with unique views of the bridges, bluffs and riverfront. The guide was a little hyper, talking 100 miles an hour, but his enthusiasm was infectious. He had a spiel full of anecdotes and history lessons that were fun and interesting and kept everyone entertained. But you don't get any of the advertised tour of city streets except on the way to the river. Scheduling can be awkward. You're only able to call the day of a tour after 9am to make a reservation for that day. But you might find some of the advertised tour times not available if a group tour has been booked or if the weather is bad. It can wreck havoc on a schedule, but is worth the effort and inconvenience. We thoroughly enjoyed our tour and it was a great deal at half price, but at full price I'd be tempted to at least consider other options for getting on the water. read more

I'm a pleasantly surprised former skeptic of the Dukw tour boats in downtown Chattanooga . Went today with my mother and 5 kids in tow from almost 2 years old to 9 years of age and I can honestly say it may be the first time we have all equally enjoyed something so fully. No eye rolls . No restless, bored squawking from the baby. The driver / captain/ tour guide was great . A little silly at first, but entertaining and then my oh my the history lesson was awesome. It was entertaining and educational - all the kids were allowed to steer the boat which was incredible to them all the while the guide is spouting interesting information about the city. If you are a tourist and are having to choose activities I would definitely recommend this over the incline. It's way more fun and you can drive up lookout if you really want the view. read more

We loved the Chattanooga Ducks tour! Went last week on our family vacation. The tour takes you both on land in downtown and in the River. Unfortunately I cannot remember the name of our guide but he was great! Super friendly and funny too. He showed us tons of great things around Chattanooga and told us all about the history of Chattanooga as well. Educational and fun tour! He let all the kids-including my son who isn't yet 2 years old-take a turn at driving the boat and honking the horn! Did this with my 8 year old son. To start the DUKW is just cool to look at, it's not like anything you've seen before. Seating is like a school bus. The road portion is very short. Pretty much the shortest path to & from the water. The splash into the water is the most exciting part. Full speed from the top of the boat ramp. The time in the water is spent mostly letting kids drive the truck and the guide telling you about Chattanooga. Our guide (Dave I believe) knew more about the city than any human ever should. As an adult I appreciated knowing more about the city, as a kid he got to drive the boat. Great experience on both levels and something the family should do while in Chattanooga. read more

Do not go on this if you get sick from fumes. I became ill from the fumes on the boat. I wish I had known better but I didnt. This boat goes about 2 MPH. It turns and you breathe exhausted from the boats motor. Was miserable. Sorry to post a bad review but it's truth. FYI: Duck is a part-time tour bus, part-time boat. Take a look at their website for more information. After searching the Internet on the drive up to Chattanooga, I was looking for something fun to do on the river with the kids. I read reviews about the River Gorge Explorer and other boat rides, and decided that the kids (ages 9 & 6) might be bored with them so we would leave it off the itinerary. That changed after we saw the Chattanooga ducks driving downtown towards the river. (why are there no reviews on this attraction?) On Saturday they advertise an 8:00pm tour. We ate dinner at Sticky fingers and then walked down to their location (behind Chattanooga cupcakes). If there are enough people wanting to ride they will open up more rides (8:15...) They have 3 ducks running the route. This tour ended up being the highlight of our trip. Maybe because it was an unexpected treat. Our Captain (captain Barry) kept everyone entertained the entire trip. We drove downtown towards the river and once at the boat launch, we head straight for the river where the bus becomes a boat and we cruised along listening to interesting tidbits of Chattanooga history from Captai including audience participation along the way. The driver/guide was funny and full of interesting trivia. (Did you know that Coca Cola doesn't bottle their own drinks?) He even let a 5 year old kid steer the duck for a few minutes! It was really cool going fast down the ramp and splashing into the water and experiencing an amphibious vehicle. One thing I do wish it had was more driving around town, it was basically driving straight from the staging area to the ramp. After riding around in the water, I was expecting a little more.
