Love this office!! Dr. Orrington is amazing!! The office has all the newest technology! My experience is always an exceptional one.

Just thought I should stop by to add my review since I am still dealing with issues caused by my experience with this dentist office more than 5 years later. Dr. Orrington put braces on for me when I was in High School ( i didn't have crazy teeth just a few small hiccups that I wanted to perfect which I now regret), having the braces were so uncomfortable and painful for the entire 3 years I had them. The molar bands would bend and cut into my gums. Food would also become trapped between the molar bands and my tooth. When I let him know of the trouble, he'd speak to me as if I've done something wrong instead of focusing on fixing my problem. It got to a point of pain where I just rip the molar band off myself. The base of my two bottom molar teeth were destroyed they both had a hole and discoloring. Leading to him telling me that I'd need root canals and crowns which was madly expensive. Fast forward to today and both of those teeth have broken completely and I've had to have them extracted. I've never had to get root canals or any extractions so it's majorly frustrating and upsetting that something and someone I thought would help me caused such prolonged damage and pain. If you're looking for a dentist/ortho you can trust and rely on you should keep looking, honestly. I wish I could go back in time and change my decision read more

This is fascinating to see all these 1 star reviews. I went here in the late 90s and Dr. Orrington was arrogant and tried to commit insurance fraud. He wanted to do multiple fillings in teeth I had never complained about. He wanted to drill in completely healthy teeth. I had never been told in my life that I had a cavity in any tooth. Never had any work on my teeth up to that point. I left that office and never looked back. 30 years later and still never needed those fillings. My teeth are healthy white and straight. I did have a root canal on one tooth 10 years ago. Besides that, I've never had a filling, pulled tooth, or anything. This man was rabid. Even at 48 now, people still ask are my teeth real because they're so white and straight. Fortunately I had other options. This man wanted to drill in my mouth just to get some money. When he said 6 cavities, I knew he was lying. Especially since every other dentist said I had the best teeth they had ever seen. This man seems to have not changed in 27 years. I came to this page because I had a conversation about black business and how we do our own people, I had a flashback to Dr. James Orrington and my experience there and wondered if he was still practicing. This dental office charges fees based on what type of insurance you have. They do not have "standard" fees, therefore your charges are based on whether you are paying out of pocket or paying with great insurance like mine. I think this should be illegal. So I only wanted to know if the dentist could close a gap in my two front teeth using the bonding method. However, I was told they would not ask the dentist this question, nor would he answer it, unless I pay for a consultation. I asked them how much does the consultation cost and they asked me what type of insurance did I have. Once I told them about my great insurance, they said well you don't have to worry about the cost, your insurance will pay for it and I told them I'm not going to allow someone to charge my insurance enormous fees. So they asked again if they could schedule the consultation appointment and I said sure, but I won't attend until I know the cost of the consultation. Day before the appointment they called me and again I asked for the cost of the consultation and they refused to provide me with the costs and said I cannot even know if the doctor does the bonding method without paying for a consultation and having x-rays as well. I cancelled the appointment and she hung the phone up on me once I cancelled so I advise everyone to stay away from companies that have different prices based on how you're paying. i went through these reviews just nodding my head... i had an equally terrible experience here. i waited over an hour, and have never jumped through so many hoops for insurance. i will say, the ladies were nice. the situation was annoying, but no one was rude to me. when they finally took me back, the dental tech said i'm eligible for an annual cleaning, as covered by my insurance. i told her to go ahead, even though i was there to bond my broken front tooth. when i finally saw the doctor, he gave me the same scripted speech i'd heard him give other patients. true to other reviews, he was running around between patients in a literal hazmat suit. long story short, i would not have waited an hour just to have my teeth cleaned for $600 had i known they weren't in network for my insurance. the problem i came in for was not resolved... i left with my front tooth still broken because i didn't want to cough up an extra $1k. my time was wasted and i felt taken advantage of. read more

This place is MAAAAD GHETTO. They curse, they argue, they don't pay attention, they're late, they're texting or on their cell phones. I had to schedule an appointment for a teeth cleaning 3 times. Each time they had me show up just to tell me the same thing they told me before (info that I supposedly confirmed over the phone a day or two before each appointment.) I just walked out the door after waiting an hour and nine minutes for the dentist to come over and start "spit balling" info that wasn't pertinent to me I.e. scaling/ gum disease. He wanted to numb me for the service (that's the only way to get your teeth cleaned at this office). I opted out of the numbing and started asking more questions which resulted in my walking out. They have been wasting my time since September. DO NOT COME HERE. FIND A BETTER OPTION. This 1 star is for the lady that I spoke with over the phone. She has a unique name but I forgot. Terrible and I'm already 1 hour past my appointment and haven't even been called. Customer service started off well (Athena) in the beginning by what I believed to be the receptionist. It was obvious they were behind because there were way too many people in the lobby given covid ( 14 exact not including the two ladies at the front). The waiting room is smaller than my living room. When the receptionist received assistance at the front, it was greeted by a rude and crass woman (long ponytail, heavy set with a name tattooed right above her wrist.) What I don't understand is why they don't verify insurance the day before? Why don't they tell you to come 30-45 min early? Why are they rude? Why did the lady who came well after me get serviced before me? Why does the receptionist have attitudes? This is why I don't always support black businesses because they have terrible service and are never in time. Not sure if I'll even get my teeth cleaned as I'm more interested in telling the dentist about his terrible place of establishment. They talked trash about a Kiera who was their co worker. Why do I hear about you in the front waiting room while you're in the back working??? The front desk staff, especially the young lady that handles the billing is horrifically rude and unprofessional. Dr Orrington is going to continue to lose his creditability and good patients if he keeps these people working at his practice. They have very poor customer service skills, they lack interpersonal skills and let's not even start to speak about how she (the billing specialist) has absolutely NO sense of follow up. Dr Orrington of Chatham Dental is the epitome of horrible bedside manner. I would give him -100 stars if I could! Totally disrespectful, rude, unprofessional, and then gets mad when he can't hear you (which is due to a protective suit he wears, head to toe, looking like an astronaut!) I was referred to Orrington's dental office by my HMO insurance (choices were limited in my area) for an emergency visit after my normal dentist had been involved in an accident. Let me say that this was THE worst experience I ever dealt with involving a dentist!! On Feb. 22, 2024, Dr Orrington told me during our appointment that I would need a root canal if I wanted to keep the infected tooth or I could have an extraction. I told him I would like to keep the tooth if possible, and that I wanted a cleaning. He said ok, my assistant would be with you shortly. He left and about 15 mins later, the lady came in there and said they would refer me to a specialist for the root canal. I told her I thought Orrington was going to do it since didn't say anything about a specialist. She said he didn't do root canals there but he could still do the deep scale cleaning that day, as well as provide me with antibiotics, pain meds, and a referral to the specialist for the infected tooth. So I paid in full what the insurance did not cover, $180, for the deep cleaning. Orrington later comes back in and we discuss the cleaning. I also asked him about the specialist and the root canal. We then had a heated exchange about what was said; I told him that I didn't hear him say anything about a specialist and he said he did tell me. As the conversation became more stupid, I told him I did not want him doing ANYTHING to my mouth considering how ignorant he is and I wanted my $180 for the cleaning refunded to my card. He just stared at me for a few seconds and said ok. Ohhhh, but it gets worse!!! When I went to the front office to get my money back, the lady wanted me to sign several documents, which included two in particular -- a receipt showing that the transaction for the cleaning had been voided, and second document stating, in part, that I would not discuss the visit on social meeting. I signed the "receipt" document, but I refused to sign the one about posting on social media. She left and came back stating Orrington would not release my paperwork or any receipts to me until I signed the "social media" document. I mean, he was basically holding my paperwork hostage until I signed that document! So after much back and forth, I signed it ... but preceded my signature with, "Under duress, I am signing this document...," and then proceeded to list everything I disagreed with on the document, and also indicated that he was refusing to release my paperwork if I did not sign said "social media" document. After seeing my "duress" statements, he consented to destroy the, "social media" document that I had signed PROVIDED he was allowed keep the "voided" transaction receipts. I was fine with that considering I had been dealing with this ridiculous situation so long that the $180 had already been returned to my account. Unbelievable that I had to go to those lengths to get my paperwork; I just have no words. There was also another patient in there complaining about him that day as well. Steer clear of this guy. He's horrible. Now I understand why he only has one star. The only thing good about Orrington's office was his staff. They were very nice. They must be saints to work for that man. read more

I'm very disappointed in my experience here, especially after telling my daughter not to judge a book by its cover. Our appointment for an ortho was at 10 a.m. We communicated the why behind our need. After filling out registration papers, we were ushered back 30 minutes after the start of our appointment. My daughter was taken back for X-rays. Five minutes later the Doctor/Dentist came in to inform me we'd be charged for the visit but he was pursuing "new business ventures" and will not be taking any new cases. So after billing my insurance for a new visit and X-rays this business referred us out. Instead of telling us up front no new ortho cases will be taken, before billing our insurance, they unprofessionally responded the doctor didn't communicate with them. I will follow up with my insurance company to dispute the claims but I would never recommend this place to anyone. read more

This was one of the most traumatizing experiences that I have ever had. I got hit in the mouth with the x-ray machine and the tech said " sorry I'm in a rush I have to pick up my kids". Then I got charged for services that wasn't Complete. He started my root canals but they got infected and he sent me to the ER cause OBVIOUSLY he didn't know what to do. The ER thought it was an absence which I would have needed and emergency surgery for. I even tried going back to let him correct his wrongs, and he would leave me in the lobby so long I would leave mind you he did that like 4 times. I am reporting him to the board, my insurance, and talking to an attorney to see if I have a lawsuit so that should let you know how bad it was..........I'll remember this for LIFE!!!! read more

I wish I could give it zero. (My husband doesn't leave reviews so I'm doing it for him.) He went in for a toothache and was told he needed a root canal and one of his teeth pulled. First visit the staff was RUDE and very INPERSONAL. He was given a prescription for antibiotics and pain pills and told to come back the following week for the extraction. When he goes back, not only did he have to wait 3 hours to be seen, but once he gets to the back the Dr tells him they don't do extractions and he needs to see an oral surgeon. "The receptionist made a mistake". But if he paid the so called dr $20 he would pull it anyway. Very shady and I'm hoping he was joking. Anyways... 2 weeks and 2 trips later nothing has been done and he still has pain and apparently an infected tooth. This place is a joke and a scam! Go somewhere else. read more

Chatham dental deserves no stars. My visit started after waiting 2.5 hours. I was supposed to get endodontic review and recommendation to be sent to my dentist. Instead I received an x-ray and a cleaning on the left side of my mouth. Resulted of the exam were never sent so I called and was promised they would be sent. Never was sent. I decided to go elsewhere to get the right side cleaned and an endodontic review. When I called Chatham to have the x-rays emailed to my new doctor I was told that they don't email the results and that I would have to come in person to request them and pay $30 and then wait 3 days and come back to pick them up. My mom referred me to this place for my braces when I was 15 (I'm 17 now) after her tooth extraction, she had a great experience. Upon arrival, the first experience was great then a few appointments later, I got my braces on. The next couple of experiences were totally disgusting. It got so bad to the point where we thought he was impaired while working. He started asking my mom and I, what procedure he was going to do after the appointment was already set and he knew I had to come back for my braces to be tightened every 45 days. Then one experience, my older sister took me (16 at the time now) he was very rude to the lady next to us, she was older and he was basically speaking to her as if she was a kid, and it was terrible. And now, recently, we just called in for an appointment and now he's saying he doesn't take county care anymore. No heads up or anything and if you know, you know other dentists don't follow up behind someone else's work so now it'll have to be this huge thing with me probably getting my braces off then put back on. Since there isn't an option to leave zero stars, I guess one will suffice. This is the worst dental office I've ever visited. I was seen about an hour after my scheduled time, in which, there were still 3-4 people ahead of me. The dentist( and I use that term loosely), was hopping from one room to the other in between services. I was there for an exam and cleaning. It's been a (long) while since I've been to the dentist, which I stated on the intake form, so I expected an extensive exam. Or at least a decent one for that matter. Well, I got the complete opposite. For starters, the "cleaning" was nothing but him polishing my teeth, never retracting my cheeks which caused him to get more of my gums rather than my teeth; which by the way left them pretty sore for 48 hours. As he's polishing my teeth, he never once used the suction to remove my saliva so I'm literally drowning in my own spit. The only conversation I got out of him was him explaining all of the work that I would need to get done( now he's chatty because insurance payments/money is involved). Once we got past this point, and I was able to dump the gallon of spit out of my mouth, he heads back to another room to rush on someone else (I'm assuming). In comes one of the assistants with a treatment plan and to see if I'd like to get started on the work right then and there which would've made no sense considering he's already overbooked and I'd be there for another 2 hours. Why on earth they'd think I'd want to let him rush restorative work in my mouth is beyond me. A simple cleaning seemed to be too much to ask for. Forgot to mention that one of the front desk staff was rude. The entire experience left me less than satisfied and to say that I'll never return would be stating the obvious. Please save your valuable insurance and money and go elsewhere. Oh another thing, be prepared to have to spend more money to receive a copy of your treatment plan and X-rays should you decide to see another dentist to get real treatment. read more

I called multiple times and someone kept saying they would call back but never did so I came to the office. The receptionist said it was not ready and it was several records he had ahead of mine. I would've been more understanding had I not been told 2-3 days. I finally get the print out it's literally a printer sheet copy. I would not recommend this Dental Office to my worst enemy. My son and I was scheduled for a first time visit at 5 p.m.. After waiting a hour and 15 minutes I decided to ask the receptionist/assistant how much longer is the wait. She response you have a few more people ahead of you; so basically a hour or so more. I thought that I was at a dentist office and not the emergency room. At that point I decided to leave. It should be made known upon scheduling that there is a possibility of a long wait, so that I can make a decision about how I want to spend my time. Very unprofessional staff and not very clean. The dentist books more than one patient in the same slot. Each time I've gone and I've had to wait 1-2 hours. Last time I was there they had me waiting for almost 2 hours and one of that hour was sitting in the chair. I heard the doctor and his staff in the back laughing and joking around as if they were on a break, yet they had patients in chairs. No staff to be found. I left my chair to ask where the doctor was. No one. Called the office twice, no answer. Finally someone showed up and Myself and others expressed our frustrations. The doctor then showed up in a few minutes and said his stomach was hurting and he was in the bathroom which was a flat out lie because I heard him and his staff joking around. I will be going again soon, if my expierence is the same I will be finding a new dentist. If my experience is better, I will update my review. ***update: I called for an appointment, the dentist himself gave me a slot, I went and showed up 10 minutes early and was told that I was not in the appointment book. I hate coming here for every visit for my son. Had braces put on him through county care. Every time its time to tighten the braces up its a problem according to the dentist. Always complaining bout public assistance but wanna clean the whole family teeth instead of what brought us in here. The wait is always 2-4 hrs long in the waiting room. Only to get in the back to wait another hour for the dentist to complain about the insurance and have somebody call to insure whatever is done will be covered. The Dentist has no regards for people time he is very disrespectful and doesn't deserve to even own a business in the black peoples community especially if he is going to downright look down on us and treat us with such disregard and disrespect. Asked how long was the wait because my appointment was a 12:00 and it was 11:50. Was told it was a 30mins to an hour wait!! Since the waiting room is a COVID nightmare I left. A few days later, I return and the waiting room is packed again. I ask, when will I be seen? They just said that my name is on the list. I can't even give this place stars. Very unprofessional. Had us sitting for over 2 hours for the so called dentist to rush through as quickly as possible so he could go home for the day. The assistants were eating in the area and everytime hr dentist needed something he had to call for them and wait. They didn't even put a bib on my son and he told him to get up and go rinse his mouth after the fastest "cleaning" I had ever witnessed in my life. I don't even trust that what he says need to be done is true and have to get a second opinion. The dentist was overly rough, did not wait for the numbing to take affect before he decided to say "he needs a root canal, and ended up cutting my son's gums and making a bigger hole in his tooth. They also did not give any after care instructions. It seemed like the only thing they care about is going home early. It was also not as clean as it should've been either. Unfortunately I had to visit Chatham dental of which I will never visit again! they schedule about 15 people for 930 appointment with Dr. orrington you don't get to see him until an hour and a half or two later he's extremely brief and I'm attentive I would never visit this office again! the doctor is like trying to make as much money as he can make in a short period of time he's not detailed at all! he doesn't listen and he's not even paying attention to any questions being asked. I tried asking about additional services such as teeth whitening All the while he's talking to staff keep asking me to repeat myself! I believe this place is already shut down because of its lack of professionalism. The dentist was very snappy and short with me. He made me feel uncomfortable about my situation. There aren't any walls just a chair sitting across from someone else's no privacy at all! I'm not sure what's wrong with the employees there but they're just not friendly! First of all let me say that I've NEVER utilized any service without reading the reviews. I was in excruciating pain and my normal dentist on Pulaski couldn't get me in until the next day and lord knows I wish I'd waited but again I was in excruciating pain. Flyers had been coming to my house for months from this place and I always just threw them away. Well I needed a Dentist ASAP and called Chatham Dental bc its close to my home. They gave me a same day appt as long as I got there before 2:00 PM. I got there at 1:15PM and settled in for a long wait in the smallest waiting room I'd ever since in my life. Everyone was masked so that was a good sign. My Insurance was approved after an hour and a half. I've NEVER had a doctor/dentist have to send over an approval form and wait for the Insurance company to Fax them back the approval. Any other Doctor/Dentist I've ever been to just enters the info into the computer, see its valid and its instantly approved within seconds. At the 2 and a half hour mark I'm finally taken to the back. No privacy, no doors, not even a curtain, just dental chairs spread out haphazardly. The pleasant Dental Assistant asks me why I'm there and does the XRAYS. Then the Doctor comes, sits down and says: You need a deep root cleaning, 2 cavities filled and a root canal. I say I only want the tooth extracted. He says I can save the tooth by doing the root canal now and the cleaning and fill your 2 cavities. I say I just want the tooth extracted. He then gets an attitude and tells his Assistant: She knows better than me and just wants it pulled! By now the pain is unfathomable and I just want the tooth gone so I didn't leave like I should have. Then she leaves and comes back with these forms that she tells me to sign. So I'm reading the forms and he says just sign them so we can get done. I say I dont sign anything without reading it and he walks away mumbling. Well I'm glad I read them bc they were printouts of the services I was receiving and the price I had to pay. They'd circled Deep Root Cleaning, Root Canal, Extraction, Fillings & Xrays totaling $1,999.00 of which they said I'd have to pay $345 RIGHT NOW for the extraction!! Uuuummmm NOOOOOO!! I have Delta Dental PPO and I pay little to nothing for Extractions!! And I'd also DECLINED the additional services. Then his attitude goes off the rails and I ignored him & pulled out my phone, called my insurance company and put the agent on speaker phone and told her what was happening. And of course after she pulled my info she said I didn't have to pay ANYTHING but $34.95 for the extraction and a $50 deductible. So the front desk girl prints out a new copy of the forms for just the $84.95. Now by now I know the Dentist is a RUDE SCAMMER and I didn't want him anywhere near my mouth but again I was in worse excruciating pain than I was when I got there!!! So I REALLY want this tooth out my head!! So ok thats settled and we're about to get started. I let him know I need EXTRA numbing gel before he gives me the shots(I've said this to EVERY Dentist I've ever been to and they've ALWAYS accommodated me(even his father James Orrington Sr.). He says ok and tells me to open my mouth & the next thing I know he's giving me the shots with NO NUMBING GEL AT ALL!!!! So now I'm crying and he tells me to be still and stop being a baby. I'm in shock, scared & appalled and its all down hill from there. It was THE WORST experience of my life!!! After the painful drilling(which smelled like burned wood which has never smelled like that with any other Dentist) pulling, cracking & yanking he was done. Blood had splattered every where and he said UUUGGHHHH give her a towel & suction and walked away. I was left traumatized and oh so angry with myself for going there in the first place. This was 3 days ago and I thank God that this man James Orrington Jr (I refuse to call him a Dentist or Doctor) was at least competent enough to get the tooth out and I'm not in excruciating pain anymore. PLEASE DO NOT go to Chatham Dental at 7931 South King Drive!!!! YOU WILL REGRET IT!!!! The ONE STAR RATING I gave is for the Front Desk Lady & Dental Assistant bc they were nice!!!! read more

Worst dentist ever! Unprofessional, books 5+ people at once and begins late. Please save your time and money. It is really sad that the community has this as a dentist. If I could give no stars I would. He needs to be reported to the better business bureau. read more

ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE! The dentist is extremely rude and full of sarcasm, he is always in such a rush, and he do not listen to his patient concerns at all. The infection control is almost nonexistent. The equipment is dirty and looks as if it hasn't been properly cleaned or sterilized in a while and the list goes on. Please don't waste your time with this place read more

This is the worst unprofessional dentist to go to..they got $450 out of me!!..the dentist was rushing, he shows no care for his patients and had no assistance..all they care bout is the money and he is black..when he finished with my teeth all he said was good job..got up and left, didn't rinse my mouth, then the supposed to be receptionist gone tell me you're done it's a sink there...I was so pissed..my experience there was horrible..do not go there..this dentist deserves no stars..they need to shut down read more

I was in need of a quick appt for a cleaning and found them on Opencare. They are in my neighborhood and fit my needs. The receptionist was pleasant and efficient. She took my info and passed me on to the Hygenist. The office has updated equipment. The Hygienist was speedy gonzales, which could be a good thing sometimes. She has it down to a science. Finally, Dr Orrington came in with a friendly smile, answered questions and made me feel very comfortable. Its not a boutique downtown practice, but definitely has a neighborhood feel to it. My appt was all of 45 minutes which was AWESOME! They are worth a visit. read more

This place really disappointed me. They were overbooked and worked really slow. I made my appointment for 3:30 was not let into the building until 4:15 and decided to leave at 5:30. If I would have known the process was like this I would have never tried to use this place as my primary dentist. I was never asked about my appointment and when I decided to cancel my appointment after 2 hours of waiting and nothing happened. I almost feel like they were happy to see me go because they were overbooked. I couldn't even get to the services because the before experience just made me sooo mad. read more
