I'm surprised to read anything but a positive review for Chase -- focusing solely on the San Carlos, CA branch. I also bank at BofA, and there is a HUGE difference. Every time I go to Chase there is a security guard who opens the door for me and greets me politely. Every teller I have ever dealt with is polite and efficient. The personal bankers have been super attentive and responsive. I like the bank better far better than BofA, and the investment reps better than Merrill. And I didn't "choose" Chase. I ended up there after they took over First Republic. So I was looking at them side-eyed when the relationship started. But I have found zero to complain about, and a lot to compliment. read more

Chase bounced our tenant's rent check "because the computer thought it might be fraud." There was plenty of money in the account and absolutely nothing wrong with the check. Both of us are longtime Chase customers and local residents. The bank just unilaterally decided they weren't going to let the check go through, causing major headaches for both parties. When we went to this branch in person to clear up the problem, the manager was completely unsympathetic and tried to shift blame onto our tenant in his absence. They refused to talk to the tenant on the phone to get the matter cleared up. There was no acknowledgement that the bank made a mistake, no regret for denying a legitimate transaction. If there is one thing I look for in a financial institution, it is dependability. This ain't it read more

My first time here when I came for a visit about a month ago, to see how my experience could've been different than the San Mateo/Hillsdale bank I would go to on a Saturday. Impressed at first there was a security guard at the front (who took longer to react, but then eventually opened the door for me. Lol) As soon as you walk in, the walls are adorned with paintings of the first settlers. (Native Americans, I think?) I look straight ahead and notice the vault is wide open in the center of the room, which explains the security guard (which no other local Chase bank has). Plenty of friendly tellers on the left and they were quick to greet and assist me. Ample parking in front (during lunch on a Memorial weekend). I'm still trying to figure out why the bad ratings at this location. Guess I'll have to keep returning here to find out for myself. But definitely recommend this location to all. read more

Chase is making banking more time consuming than timed with only hours to complete. Case in point. I wrote a check to a co. To Pay. Chase sent security code to confirm 2.5 hours later then it No longer works. Called back per security, they said live security code was sent But I can't see it on my phone they did this 3 times total. No codes received. Chase said you now have 3 hours to complete this in person at a chase location. All this just to clear a single transaction. Btw I have plenty of funds in there. What is going On. read more

Went in today to talk to the manager about an instance I had with their ATM last week. I had deposited cash into the right ATM machine (not the left), and the machine uruptly stopped and sucked up my funds. It spit out an incident receipt and told me to call the (800) number. I was in a rush and they were about to close. Today was my first opportunity to go back, and they told me that they would have to open up a claim and wait 45 to 90 days for it to be processed. Now I understand that anyone off the street could do this, but I came in with a valid ATM card, my ID, and the incident receipt. I would assume that at the end of the night if there was a variance in funds in the ATM machine, someone would have a record of it. I shouldn't have to wait this long for a CASH deposit investigation. Check your cameras! The information is on the receipt. If there is a failure on this branch to provide me with my funds within on a couple business days, I will close down both my savings and my checking account. 1. We all know it's not the tellers fault for this, but Chase is forcing their customers to bank online or use ATM's = Hardly any tellers = Long lines = Frustration. I refuse to use ATM's for banking because of hacking. 2. Every teller at this location is great except for one who rushes me out because of 1 or 2 customers behind me = Rude, I require 2 transactions to take place during my banking. No teller should rush any customer out for doing business with them. 3. I do appreciate the parking lot security who watches out for people who park at the lot for errands and who do not bank at Chase. 4. I do appreciate the bankers who are professional. 5. I do not appreciate Chase for charging me for personal checks even though I'm "grandfathered" into an old account that never had to pay before. It's hard out here for a Chase customer. When I was in the midwest there was a chase bank or ATM on every corner and in every Target and Walgreens. No matter where I was, my cash bases were pretty much always covered. Out here in Cal-i-for-ny-A... not so much. Out here it's all of Bank Of Americas and Mid-America it's just been real hard for a Chaser like myself to find cash convenience. Luckily, I zoomed past and through this San Carlos gem the other day to utilize their large parking area (key in downtown San Carlos) and their speedy, multi-lane drive thru ATMs. Well kept, has parking, didn't take forever, in a convenient location to other places I sometimes go... what more could I ask for besides some actual money to put in my account? read more

One of the worst and most unprofessional banks I have ever been to. I have been to other Washington Mutual locations, but not this branch. However, I don't think I will ever go back to this one. One recent weekday afternoon around 4:45pm (they close at 6pm) I came in to open a new CD and there was absolutely no one working the new accts/customer service area. I looked around and although there was only 1 other customer in the bank, none of the 2-3 tellers bothered to ask me if I needed help. All the tellers looked like they were indifferent high-school or college-aged kids who were chatting or joking around in the back. I finally approach a teller to ask about opening an account and they did say please wait. So I waited... and waited... and waited. After waiting close to 10 minutes with no sign of anyone coming to help nor any teller acknowleding me (there was barely any other customers in the entire bank), I finally said screw it and there was no way in hell I would be putting my money here so I left. But the weirdest thing happened during my wait. For about 1-2 minutes during that time, ALL the young -looking tellers in the bank disappeared into the back and left the entire front teller area abandoned. At one point a customer came in looking for a teller and was very confused not to find anyone. The bank could have been easily robbed with no one in the front. Bottom line: After this, no way in hell I would ever be a customer of this branch of Washington Mutual. I am a fan of Washington Mutual, but stay away from the San Carlos branch unless they have more professional management come in. read more

All right, I have to give these guys a little credit after I just read their one-star review. TRUE, a friend of mine told me she'd never go in there again after they were rude to her. TRUE, they really ticked me off one day when they closed the doors early, before 6:00, when I needed to make a deposit. However, for the most part, the people who work there have been pretty decent in my experience. Maybe the management has changed. "Cyrus" is super nice (he's one of the guys who sits at a desk in the front), and the rest of the staff seems pretty decent. And their parking lot is pretty great, very easy to park in, usually a spot or two in front, a lot easier to park at than the one in downtown redwood city. And there is usually less of a line at this WAMU too. read more

I was a new customer going to make my first deposit at this branch. Not only did the line take forever (an exceptionally long amount of time, compared to other banks), the staff there were not friendly at all. I mean, seriously, if you don't like your job, don't work there! Someone needs to have a conversation with corporate about this branch, it stinks. So, as my first WaMu visit went, I waited in line for 20 minutes (only 5 people were in line) only to discover the account I opened hadn't cleared and they were going to hold my paycheck for 2 weeks as a result. No thanks. Crap service, unfriendly tellers and 2 weeks to use my money? I suddenly remembered the saying, if it's too good to be true, it probably is. WaMu San Carlos should be closed down and just leave the ATM outside. The people inside are useless. read more

Our family has been banking with Chase for over 2 decades. The incompetence at San Carlos branch is the worst possible for a world-wide bank. Stephanie, said she was in charge and didn't know how to cash an EE bond. She hands me a selfie note with the website. If she even knew a little about bonds, she would know that the bank needs to verify the signature of the bond holder before it is mailed in. Her responses and attitude made it clear that she and the other teller didn't know what they were doing. I left to go to Citibank where they cashed it with no problem. But other Chase branches have cashed a mature bond in the past. read more

This location is the best hands down. I had issues with my account because it was compromised by a hacker and there was just alot going on. So I left because I was frustrated not with the people at the bank but the fraud department through the 800 number. Long story short I went back within an hour and the same lady helped me. I didn't catch her name but her merchant # was 5351278 and she was so nice and very understanding. The best experience I have had in a bank in a very long time. So this location hasn't done anything for me to rave about them, but so far my experiences here haven't been bad. I may just be lucky, but I haven't had any major hitches when going here. The people at the desks seem generally helpful (willing to help when there is a line), the phone call I had was courteous, the lines have moved along quickly, and the tellers processed my transactions without much delay. You can believe I'll be refinancing my car loan with someone else. Where I don't have to come down to the bank and deal with tellers who are rude. I'll be able to pay online. So done with Chase. Stephanie is the assistant manager there, and it is time for some hospitality and empathy lessons. I asked to speak to someone above her, she said she was the assistant manager and that she was the person to talk to. I'd hate to think that is the way you want to be represented as. I hate to be a complainer because I've been a teller and I know there's only so much you can do, but I went to the Laurel St branch to wire money and they said it would be a 30 minute wait. Went back the next morning, was told the person who does wires hasn't arrived yet. What? Teach your tellers to do wires, or let people wire more than $25k online. The customer service here has declined drastically. Everytime I go in for a simple transaction it easily becomes something that takes between 20-40 minutes. The lines are long and there are not enough tellers to keep the lines going at a good pace. Even if the lines are long the tellers chit chat with their friends with all the customers looking on in disbelief. The reps that work on the cubicles are not very helpful. If one teller is pulling up your bank account information there are other workers that magically linger around the computer screen looking at your information with great curiosity. Which I felt was a gross intrusion to my privacy. I would love to take my business somewhere else and looking for alternative banks. read more

Just need to make a little note of this. I made a large withdrawal recently, and the ATM had quite a lot of trouble pushing the cash out to me (it also took my card very very very slowly). I had to stick my fingers into the little guillotine-like hole and fish my money out -- and within a second or two of me getting it out, the door snapped shut. It was a little scary. I understand a withdrawal of $800 is larger than most (I was buying a car), but if the ATM cannot handle it it should be programmed as such. read more

Meh, experience is fine, the times I've come inside (which is to get cash to pay for auto repair at a shop in town) the tellers have provided good customer service. One thing handy about this location is that they have a drive-thru ATM, the first one I've seen myself. I was waiting in line at the regular ATM (because the line inside was quite long), and one of their customer service agents pointed me to the drive-thru one (which at the time I didn't know they had). Admittedly I had low expectations, but was pleasantly surprised when my wife and I (who are new to the area) were met with excellent customer service.
