Never once correctly stopped a fraudulent payment, but repeatedly flagged transactions where I presented the credit card in person as fraudulent. Denied a 51 cent transactions with Amazon, after correctly paying similar monthly transactions for nearly a decade. Given years to correct absurdly high false positive fraud rates they instead chose to screw their customers. Declined for fraud an ATM transaction at another credit unions ATM a mile from my listed home address, and where I had previously used the card. Continued to process charges against that card after being instructed to close all accounts, and then used those charges as an excuse to not close the account. Provident has decided that is is better to kick their customers in the teeth rather than accept a trivial amount of additional fraud risk. A credit union that denies you access to your money on a whim or roll of the dice is a financial liability. Stay away from these incompetent fuck ups at all costs. read more

After being with Provident Credit Union for 9 years up in Folsom, I was excited to introduce my parents to Provident Credit Union in San Mateo since I had just moved back to the Bay Area. They both were happy with their current banks but thought they may want to check Provident out and see what they had to offer. I called Provident a few days before to make an appointment to make sure someone would be available to help us. The appointment was set with Bonnie. So far so good, right? Well, sadly, our experience was a total disappointment. My parents, my brother and myself walked into Provident, on the day of our appointment. They were not busy at all. We stood there and not one employee stopped what they were doing to say hello and ask how we could be helped. The one and only teller looked up at us and said nothing. The person in the office closest to us was focused on her computer. She looked up at us quite a few times and looked back at her computer. Bonnie and her manager came out of a meeting and looked at us and immediately went to their offices and began working on their computers. We were 10 minutes early and all it would have taken was a quick "hello...we will be right with you." After being totally ignored, we walked outside to discuss if we even wanted to keep our appointment. We decided to go back in where Bonnie finally decided to come and greet us. She walked to her office and sat in her chair. All four of us walked into her office. She just sat there rather than standing and making sure my 89 year old parents were seated comfortably. Once my parents sat, my brother and I stood next to her desk. It never phased her that we had no place to sit. She began talking with my parents. At one point my brother and I asked if we could bring in two more chairs. Bonnie looked at us and hesitantly said yes but that was it. My brother and I had to go look for two chairs and bring them in. Again, Bonnie just sat in her chair and never thought to stand up and help nor tell us which chairs we could bring in. Bonnie's lackluster attitude was a complete turnoff. So much so, my Dad immediately decided he was not interested in moving some of his money to Provident. Bonnie did not engage whatsoever with my parents. She did nothing to get to know my parents or make my parents feel she was interested in earning their business. At the end, we were supposed to come back, later in the day, to finish opening my Mom's account. After we all got in our car, we all agreed we would not be going back to finish opening my Mom's account. Bonnie left us with zero desire to bring our business to Provident Credit Union. Banking services are fine but do not get a credit card from here. They offer attractive rewards but put security freezes on you credit so often it makes the card basically unusable. I've had my signature credit card for at least five years and within the last six month they have put four security holds on my card. This forces me to call in and verify activity. None of this activity was suspicious or for large amounts. No overseas transactions or anything that would be considered suspicious. I use it for everyday purchases and I never carry a balance. Very very disappointed with the overall process!! I refinanced my auto loan with Provident CU since I was getting a better rate (but honestly, I would have gotten it with any CU). They processed my loan such that it went under some other customers account. Really? They realized it when the other person reached out to them regarding the loan as it was showing up in her credit history. WOW! Beware: I received an offer to refinance my auto loan with this credit union in the mail. It showed my current payment with another bank as well as interest rate and then showed a lower payment from them and lower interest rate. The mailer said to come in to the San Mateo branch. I called, setup an appointment. Drove over from the coast, only to find out that their lower monthly payment was based on a 7 year loan vs. my current 5 year loan. Afterwards, I looked at the back of the mailer and the small print disclosed the 7 year term, which is not a very common loan duration. This essential info should have been incorporated on the front of the mailer. read more

One of the worst choices I ever made as a young man. I left the military and transferred my IRA from a respectable bank to provident, simply because it was closer at the time. My fault for not being educated at the time but I truly believe the Bank should have educated me on fees. Instead I lost 3/4 of my money by fees and the interest rate was so low that i never saw anything. Luckily I was young and the military moved me around so much that I never used the bank. Provident Credit Union will say your account is under automatic payment but will still report you as missing payments to the credit agencies. Even when the reported payment history indicates that it's obvious payments are not being missed. More over, this comes after reporting it the first time, only to find that it was "magically" put back on my account with the massive reduction to my credit score. While it looks like there are positives to banking here, these are the true colors you get to deal with as a customer. read more

I switched to Provident so i could have an easy checking & saving's account. When i switched to provident, i noticed about 4 - 5 Fraudulent Lyft Charges on my list of Transactions. I contacted Lyft & Provident about the Charges & they investigated & apparently they didn't think the charges were Fraud. I showed them proof those charges were not my charges & yet my Checking Account got about $35 worth of Fraudulent Lyft Charges & Provident/Lyft didn't give a shit about it. When i was w/Chase Bank, none of this shit happened. I am very disappointed & not happy w/Provident's Services. I am switching back to Chase Bank! read more
