Wells Fargo Bank - Lobby/sitting area

Wells Fargo Bank

I have been an occasional customer of the Wells Fargo Bank branch in downtown San Mateo for years…read more My experiences here have always been great. Located on 4th Avenue, the bank is one of few establishments in the area with its own parking lot. At times, the lot can be at full capacity, forcing customers to either idly wait for a space to free up or to park at a nearby public lot and walk a short distance. The branch offers an ATM machine at the front entrance and a few more at the rear of the building, facing the parking lot. Inside, the spacious and clean venue provides seating in the lobby area, new accounts section, and nearby the back entrance. Service is typically quick and smooth, even if you fall into a long queue. During my most recent visit on the afternoon of Tuesday, December 12, 2023, the tellers were very friendly and served customers with warmth and smiles. I was so impressed that I was compelled to ask to speak to the Manager on Duty to provide my positive experience, sharing my observations of client support from individuals who appeared to prioritize customer care with enjoyment. The Manager thanked me for the accolades given and agreed that the hard-working tellers deserved the recognition. Banking can feel like a tedious chore. Thank you, Wells Fargo Downtown San Mateo, for demonstrating that a trip to the bank doesn't need to be dreary nor unenjoyable.

And, I am writing specifically about the employee named Aracelli ( I believe she is in a managerial position). She is absolutely amazing in her expertise, her kindness, and her ability to deal with the public. She has always been able to handle any concerns I've had, no matter how small or complicated. All the employees there have been helpful to me, but Aracelli stands out in every aspect. I really feel I can count on her to "walk me through" anything I have questions about.

Having been with BOA for more than 30 years, I've seen this bank lose its sight when it comes to serving its customers. Don't put your money in this bank. The service is terrible, and the people working there are unhelpful. Their internal systems and procedures are old and out of date. Their bankers are only trained in one area of business, and they proudly claim to be specialists. What this really means is that they can't help you with multiple disciplines like the old bankers used to do. If you say the wrong keyword, the reply will be, "Oh, that's not my expertise. You need to make an appointment with another 'specialist' for that." Are you a bank or a hospital? Don't bring your money here; you will regret it. Don't say I didn't warn you. Just read the reviews and feedback. This bank has lost its way. It's just terrible. Oh, by the way, they don't serve walk-in customers. The esteemed "Mr. Dr. Banker" can only see you by appointment. And if you are late by one minute, good luck trying to keep your appointment..

I agreed to pay a $30 fee to have my check expedited overnight via UPS and was told I would receive a tracking number by email. I never received the email. When I called the next day, I was given a tracking number, but there is no confirmation of the transaction, and since my account is now closed, I can no longer log in to verify anything. I did receive the check--but it was not sent via UPS as promised. It was sent by regular USPS mail (postage of $0.74), yet I was still charged the $30 UPS overnight fee. I called to report this and was told someone would look into it and call me back within about two hours. I never received a return call. Now I will have to call again and spend more time trying to resolve this. This experience has been extremely frustrating and unprofessional. After more than 25 years as a customer, this is not how I expected to be treated. I would not use this institution again.

What I had a problem with is that I received a bill with a late charge. I had not been notified that there was a change to my account. I had not received an original bill for the box either. I called the branch and made an appointment to talk with a customer service rep. She called 30 minutes before the appointment time and I had to leave a meeting to speak with her. I explained the issue and she said she didn't have the authority to help. I was only asking for them to reverse the $10 fee due to their multiple errors in notification. I asked for a name and number of someone who did have authority. She said she had no name but I could call the general customer service number. They wouldn't say anything different and they would not help either. I asked what was involved with cancelling the box. She said I would still have to pay for a whole year, there would be no prorate.

There were 4 people in line, with lady in front of me stating that she had already waited 10 minutes. There were at least three other personnel in the branch at their desks attempting to look busy at their computer. No human customers were being helped by these unbothered personnel. One of these employees stated "I am a banker and cannot help". The single teller stated that "it is only me". Another lady finally came to open another teller window who was previously busy on her computer. This is after I waited another 10 minutes and another person entered to bring the line to 5. There should have been some acknowledgement of the line/wait allowing the customer to seek another branch down the street. I otherwise like banking with US bank and was sad to see the extremely poor level of service associated with this branch. (Illegible numbers on banking slip in addition to poorly managed customer line).

I needed to open an IRA account for tax purposes. Logged in on Zoom and on time on Sat 3/25/24, but stalled in the beginning having waited on my mother to join our call. When that didn't happen and after repeated the follow up instructions with Issa that he'd email me the instructions to set up a Traditional IRA account online later that night, he didn't. Called him on the following Monday, promised me the same thing he'd email me pre-signed templates that day and he didn't until I called back two days later on 4/10 since my mom had deadline to e-file my tax by 4/15. I called him a second time to follow up that he clearly didn't know what he was doing and if he could assign me to someone else. Issa quickly apologized and reasoned that he was having computer issues and ultimately the reason for delay. Bull. I made it clear to him I did not live with my Mother and she didn't have a printer at home so to email the pre-signed templates was ultimately the quickest way to transfer the information and bc my mom was not tech savvy and did not know how to navigate the online banking, email would've been efficient. Instead of wasting everyone's time, all Issa had to do was say he couldn't mail a hard copy or email me premade template(s) in setting up a Traditional IRA account, versus giving me the run around. Issa's title on business card reads Vice President of Investments for Private Clients. With my experience, he could've been a bit more professional and transparent (Not sure how difficult it was to process a simple request I had!) Next day I take time off work to go to Fidelity (having remembered I had an existing IRA account) and all customer service had to do was print out a copy of my Traditional IRA account. That was accomplished within minutes, no hassle. I was even informed setting up accounts via Zoom calls was fairly new and suggested going in person was much more reliable. Immediately after my stop at this Fidelity location, I go to my regular Chase bank location and again, I was approached with some bullshit I needed to invest 100k to open a Traditional IRA. I didn't buy into this as I had initially put in much less to open a Traditional IRA account with Fidelity in 2019/2020. Made me realize Chase was only after the 1% commission had I invested 100k to open a Traditional IRA. Chase, as a private client of yours, you have always provided excellent customer service until this point. We can keep this relationship going so long as you fire all the incompetent bankers as needed.
