The food was pretty good. I ordered the carnitas burrito. My wife wanted the carnitas platter. Are toddler ordered grilled cheese and French fries.. I think you liked the french fries the most. Our waiters and waitresses checked in on us two or three times during our stay. And the ambience was nice..low lighting, I think it was a fire going, and it smelled like good food. Dang that was good, plus the lunch special was very affordable. I had the fajita salad and it was only $14. My only complaint is not alot of heat in the hot sauce, we asked for the hottest sauce they have, they brought me Habanero, and it was in my opinion lacking some serious sweat-inducing action, but Steve said it was perfect. Drove by and were curious about how this place had changed since it was El Sarape, so we dove in. We were a litle too early for the happy hour and didn't want to wait an hour for it to start, so we ordered off the regular menu. Sis got a chicken enchilada and I got the enchilada with carnitas and a tamale. While we waited they gave us chips with both bean dip and salsa. The salsa is a little spicey but not too bad and the bean dip was nice and warm. Our orders were tasty and the tamale loaded with meat, but the masa was thick and super dry. I didn't expect that, especially since there was a sauce, but I jut took that home, knowing I could throw some more salsa on it. As for the decor, I didn't really notice mych of a change, but that's okay. They have the same high ceilings that mean it doesn't feel crowded, which I love. read more

I was at Charro the other night for dinner with some friends. It was the 4th or 5th time I had visited since the re-brand. The parking lot was tricky as always when it's crowded, but that's ok. We got a spot near the front. The food was good and predictable, but I have to tell you, the service here is pretty awesome. Every time I've been here the waitstaff has been wonderful. Friendly, polite, helpful, and attentive without being overbearing. Chips are refilled without having to ask. Check-ins for drink refills and such are right on time. I've never had to flag a server down for something, and at the same time, I never feel rushed. We sat inside because it's January. Because it's also college football playoffs, they had a game or two playing on the bar TVs. The place was still pretty quiet and chill. Overall, Charro makes for a sweet weekday night out with friends. read more

Stopped in today and had read about the changes. We didn't really notice any remodeling. We did go ahead and sit outside. The salsa was too pasty and thick. Chips were fine. Ended up ordering six street tacos and a Mexican street corn - all off of the happy hour menu. The tacos were a mix of asada, chopped chicken and chicken tinga. We received only five tacos, which was fine as they did not charge us for the missing taco. The meat on our tacos was not warm at all. The flavors were okay. I don't think the asada was actually asada. The Mexican street corn - well it was the saddest situation. Literally was warmed up canned corn with some minor seasoning and small sprinkling of cojita. Also not warm. Our server let us send it back and took it off our bill with no questions asked. I think we will wait to see if they can work out some of the kinks. Service was fine, establishment was clean. Maybe we will be back- dunno. read more

I would give 3.5 stars if I could. I was happy to find a "hot plate" mexican place in Olympia that was reasonably priced with comforting food. The beans and rice were very good, maybe a little bland? But good. The rice was very good. My enchiladas verdes were good, but lacked a little something. I think they needed a sauce with a bit more chile in it. Again, good. My wife's dinner was also good, but maybe lacking a bit of heat. The table salsa was good but also a little bland. I'd suggest a bit more heat and salt. I need a little heat with my mexican food. It was fine, just needs more oomph. Service was great. Ambiance is a little over the top. But fine. Nice large high ceilings. I would come back, but I would ask for more spice. read more

We visited Olympia and tried Charro. What a treat! It is absolutely beautiful inside and everyone was friendly and welcoming. We lived in Mexico for several years and it's our favorite cuisine. Charro did not disappoint. I had the shrimp tacos, which were excellent. We as a party tried several dishes and everything was delicious. Thank you to the handsome owner, Rodrigo? and our very sweet server who was always there when we needed her without being a helicopter. This was horrible. Not even typical "white people" focused Mexican food. This was Mexican in name only. My partner ordered the Quesabrilla and it tasted like tomato based pot roast wrapped in wet card board. I had a carne asada chimichanga which was a meat burrito that sat in warm oil for a few minutes, not crispy at all and the meat tasted like the only spice used was salt. Not that it was too salty, but that's it. The meat didn't taste like grilled asada, more like microwaved sadness. I felt bad for our waitress, she was excellent and very sweet about everything and didn't seem surprised that the food was trash. It seems like whoever owns this place spent all their money on decorating and pretty menus and absolutely zero on quality food. There are a lot of good Mexican places in Olympia, but this isn't one. 4 of us came here Saturday for my birthday. We were seated at a table large enough for 3, very claustrophobic. We ordered beers and a ceviche appetizer, and told our sever we wanted our mains after our appetizer and a couple drinks. We even passed on ordering our mains until she came by again and insisted she's put the order in after our appetizer. I wanted a round of shots but couldn't attract any attention in the 10 minutes before the food arrived, like everyone was walking with their eyes down so they didn't have to do any customer attention. She brought the ceviche, left, and immediately came back with our mains. There was absolutely no room for the food, beers, appetizer, and chips. She sat our plates sideways on the edge of the appetizer, and handed us our tortilla containers to hold in our hands while we tried to eat. We all ended up putting our tortillas in our laps and tried to make the best of it. The food (except the ceviche) was utterly bland, no flavor to the rice and beans. My wife's arroz con pollo was very nice, lots of mushrooms, but again, no heat or character. The salsa had zero heat, and we couldn't attract anyone's attention to get hot sauce until the end of the meal when the server miraculously appeared to dump the bill on top of the pile of dishes. We all left half or more of our food just because it was so tough to eat. So I'd say I was very displeased with the whole place, from the way it was run to the food. I paid $200 for 4 beers and an appetizer, and 4 entrees and was given the world's worst experience for my birthday. Thanks Charro!!! read more

My friend and I decided to try Charro for lunch today and were extremely disappointed! The service was great, but the food was mediocre at best. I ordered a Chile Relleno and cheese enchilada. My friend ordered a chicken enchilada and a chicken taco. Both came with beans and rice. While waiting, we tried the tortilla chips which tasted like they were stale and right out of bag (obviously not made in house). My Chile Relleno was tasteless and appeared to be a layer of egg around a Chile. I did not taste or see a Chile. The enchilada, well it was just a cheese enchilada. My friend stated that the sauce on her chicken enchilada tasted canned and her taco shell tasted stale. By contrast, the interior is lovely and the wait staff were attentive and friendly. In my opinion, the chef and owners need to up their game. BTW, I didn't complain to the manager because I didn't want anything else off the menu and I believe that a 1/2 eaten meal sends a message to the kitchen. read more

This is the former "El Sarape II" restaurant which appears to have rebranded and remodeled recently. Portion, prices, atmosphere and service are about on par with local restaurants, however some of the seating has seen better days (torn, frayed fabrics). There is a full vegan menu with fake meat and cheese substitutions! Open for lunch unlike many downtown restaurants - we will definitely return. read more

The disappointing piece was the sound. It was so loud and then on top they had live music which made it difficult to have a conversation and that is why I let my friend there to catch up and chat. We sat in the bar and it was difficult at best the talk. We didn't go late it was 6:30pm. That was my only disappointing piece was how loud it was. read more
