Went in to get some US cash for an upcoming trip. It's a very small space right on Granville near Robson, beside the Burger King. Walked right in, no waiting. Did the exchange quickly. However, what keeps this from being 5 stars is a rather cold and unfriendly welcome. The woman behind the counter did the exchange but showed no friendliness. Also, although I checked the rate on their website before I went in, I got less than the rate quoted. I know exchange rates fluctuate but this was a very rapid drop. Also, the owner was there and walked right past us as we were leaving, but instead of acknowledging us in any way, he averted his eyes and looked at the floor. Is it just too much effort to look at your customers and say "Thanks for coming in," or similar or even just a friendly smile? We felt completely unwelcome and will go elsewhere for future currency exchanges. How you treat your customers DOES matter. read more

Thank you again Yelp! We were looking to get some Canadian dollars and were trying to find the cheapest option. We had thought that since we had a TD account in the US, then withdrawing from TD Canada would be best. It does seem better than most other options because having a US TD account did mean we would not have to pay the $3 foreign ATM fee BUT the TD customer service person said we would still be charged a 3% international transaction fee for the currency conversion. I then did what I usually do when I do not know where to go; check Yelp! I am so glad I did because this place came up and the reviews were pretty unanimously positive that this was the cheapest option. We had a little trouble finding the place because it is on a street with a lot of prominent signage and their name is written with such small letters you could easily miss it. That made me a little nervous because I thought someone that provides such a wonderful service should have a massive sign. I did not feel that much better when I walked inside and it was just a small but long narrow space leading to two teller windows, and there was no other customers there. I soon found out why there were no other customers because the whole transaction took just a few seconds. I gave the teller US$100 and I received CA$130. I was looking for the best place to do a few currency exchanges and after some research, Charlie's Currency Exchange seemed to have the best rates. It's located conveniently downtown. Cash only! That's the one downside to CCE. I came here twice. Oddly, they didn't have any Hong Kong dollars on hand so I had to go to another exchange rate place for that. They also had limited funds of Japanese yen for another client when I went. I'd recommend giving them a quick call before heading over to make sure they have what you want. There's only one worker but he's a friendly individual. I like how they post the regular rate AND inverse rate on their screens. You have to ask him for an envelope though... The exchange rates seemed to be the best when I compared them to a few other spots in town. Most likely because you are paying cash. 3.5 stars. read more

My mom and I are going to Burma in January, so needed to exchange some currency. I usually go to Vancouver Bullion & Currency Exchange (VBCE) to exchange currency, but my mom's go-to place for currency exchange is Charlie's. I'm not sure which place has the better exchange rate, but when I compared VBCE's rate with Charlie's, they were the same/very little in difference, so they are probably about equal (at least for common currencies). The only reason why I am giving this place two stars instead of three stars is because of their lack of privacy. As someone who values my privacy and does not want strangers knowing personal details such as my full name, birthday, contact information, and address, Charlie's horrifies me. First of all, it is a very small place, and if there are a lot of people (which there were when we went), there isn't much privacy. The people waiting behind us in line had no awareness or respect for personal space, so even though there was room for them to move back, they were crowding right behind my mom as she was trying to do her business, and given the nature of the business (exchanging large sums of money), my mom felt very uncomfortable (we moved to another window around the corner for more privacy, but the employee should have told the other people to back off). Because of the amount of money my mom was exchanging, the employee asked for her ID. Since my mom has been there before, they had her on record, and the employee said he'd look her up by name. He asked for her first name, which is not an uncommon name, and of course there were several people, including my mom, with the same first name in their system. He turned the computer screen around, which showed everyone's personal information (name, address, etc), and asked my mom which one she was. I could clearly see a scan of someone's driver's license, as well as see the names and information of the other people. So not cool. Whether or not Charlie's has the best rate, I would rather go to VBCE where I can have privacy while doing my transaction, and not have staff reveal my personal information to other clients. Their service is not only great, but also fast and speedy! I've been here a couple times and both times, there were no line ups. Staff is all very friendly, nice, and gives off a laid back feeling. I came here to exchange for some Japanese Yen and happy with the exchange rates. You can check out their exchange rates on their website, which is updated frequently to match what you will get when you go in. They're also easily reached by phone so be sure to give them a call to check if they have the currency you are looking for though. They are fairly limited as when I called, they did not have New Taiwan dollars nor the more exotic Indonesian Rupiah. I spent the entire morning researching exchange rates both on-line and in-person, and I found that Charlie's Currency Exchange had the best rates in the city! I was surprised that their rates were even better than at VBCE! Also, I spoke with a family friend who works in management at one of the major Canadian banks and apparently they do not carry that many types of currencies at their branches (I was looking for Japanese Yen). Apparently we would have to submit an order for the currency through the bank and it would take a few days, plus the rates would not be as good as Charlie's rates even though we would be using the employee's special rate! Anyways, the guy running the place was really chill and we had a brief conversation since there weren't too many customers. I find the location excellent since it's right off Robson street, and literally a minute walk away from Vancouver City Centre skytrain station! read more

Very small currency exchange, half of it is pawned jewellery for sale from Charlie's past life. The USD to CAD rate is the best in Vancouver, probably the best in Canada, and it happens to be right off a major transit hub (Granville Station). The line got kind of long, and when someone asked to see the jewellery we all had to wait. Simply the best rates in town! extremely low spreads. it's even slightly better than VBCE rates. Their USD to Canada is less than 1%!! I've only seen comparable rates in Hong Kong and Singapore. Granville is their main branch conveniently located on Granville and Robson. Also has one on Davie. Used to exchange at VBCE all the time. But now I change here. Also less lineups from my experience.
