I had been a patient of Dr. Smith at Charleston GI for years. He's a very nice and friendly doctor. Last, year, my insurance company refused to cover a prescription for Humira, which I had been taking with minimal to no side effects for years, I asked the nurse for help. She was extremely rude and unhelpful. I was then switched to a biosimilar, and months later I experienced significant side effects. I left several messages with the nurse to have Dr. Smith call me to no avail. I then obtained insurance with a new company hoping to get back on Humira. The insurance company representative told me that my doctor needed to submit a prior authorization form. I asked the nurse to do so and to copy me, particularly since she refused to speak with the insurance representative or allow me to speak directly with the doctor. Apparently, she never submitted it. I found a new doctor, and within one week I was approved for Humira again. read more

Denial to schedule due to full bill not paid‼Well, this message is not about any of the doctors, but the billing !!! I had a procedure back in Dec. 2025 and gave a wonderful review to include billing , but I must recall my message about the billing process being great. Today , I called the office to schedule an appointment and was told " my account was Blocked" because my balance in Dec was not paid. What!!!! First , I must say I don't have a problem of making a payment which I discussed with the young lady when I had my procedure. She stated making a payment is fine. No one called to discuss a payment arrangement or stated I had a specific amount of time to pay off my balance. With this being said my bill is under 700 and it has only been 3 months and I have made 4 payments 2 payments where I had my procedure (down payment, and balance due from that facility) , 2 payments as of today to Charleston GI which I made earlier this month and one today. I wrote this post because I knew someone from the office would read and want to respond . So I must say the payment isn't really the problem. I don't mind making a payment, but I do mind you denying me to schedule because the balance is not paid in full. Very disappointed in how your billing is set up for your patients!!!! Is this how Roper treats their patients???If you have a specific amount of time for a balance to be paid you should tell ALL patients upfront .To include , give payment options meaning different ways to pay off by drafting from an account , taking a payment out each month to get balance paid off. I would just say you should NEVER deny someone treatment for inability to pay. I must say even though I can pay something ,their are people who can't pay at all and I think this is wrong . I am 85 years old with Crohn's disease. It has been dormant for about 30 years. A few weeks ago, I began to experience stomach pains that were similar to those when Crohn's was active. I feared for the worst. I called Charleston GI, but my doctor was away. I was referred to Dr. Lawrence who saw me the next day. After describing my symptoms and a brief check-up, he concluded that I had nothing to worry about. Subsequent blood and stool tests confirmed his diagnosis. I cannot thank him enough for allaying my fears and seeing me so quickly. In addition, he treated me with genuine interest and concern. Dr. Lawrence's patients should consider themselves fortunate to have someone with his expertise and caring manner. read more

On July 30, 2025, I had an endoscopy at Charleston GI. At my initial consultation, a dilation was never discussed. On the day of the procedure, dilation was suddenly added without meaningful time to consider or consent. After the procedure, I was discharged with no pain medication. Later that day, when I called in severe pain, my wife was told to drive to the office to pick up a paper prescription. It was written incorrectly and rejected at my pharmacy, leaving me in unmanaged pain and public humiliation as the pharmacist suggested I was attempting to pass a fake prescription. That evening, I called Charleston GI's after-hours service and waited over an hour for a return call. When the physician finally called, he was dismissive, laughed at my situation, and told me I could "sue" if I was unhappy. No meaningful care was provided. In the following days, I made multiple attempts to resolve the situation. I contacted the office, delivered a letter in person, and later sent certified mail and faxed notices. Despite these efforts, I remained in pain, unable to sleep, eat, or work. Even after eventually receiving a corrected prescription, the damage was already done. Patients deserve informed consent, competent prescriptions, and supportive aftercare. I did not receive that here. Based on my experience and failed attempts to resolve it directly with Charleston GI, I would not recommend this practice for yourself or your loved ones. read more

He not only punctured me in a routine colonoscopy but then wouldn't return my calls regarding the procedure until after his golf weekend. His staff was rude to both me and my husband. I have yet to be in the doctors care but I needed to start my review in the waiting room..... While it is an amazingly beautiful facility. Reception needs a workup on professio alism in the workplace. Discussing patients situations and concerns where it is in earshot of other patients waiting is super unprofessional AND protected by HIPA laws. Further than that is the continuous discussion of other employees and their workloads comparatively to who should be doing what when and how much they have on their calendar versus the front desk.... etc. Etc. Etc. Let me stop a moment and say that the ladies are nice enough when they are assisting patients however once done and working together their conversations quickly turn poisoned against others in the facility or they discuss patients. It just makes those waiting wonder what will be discussed once they leave reception. Professionalism begins at the front door. On time, which for any medical practice is a large plus. Efficient processing, handling and interactions by the entire staff, nurses, front desk, anesthesiologist, and Dr. Lee Royall. Unfortunately I could not rememberDr. Royall's face despite this being my 5th time (I think). They are doing these intrusive procedures every 30 minutes, but the staff, especially the nursing staff put me as much at ease as possible. At the end of the day, it was good news. Initially I went to an allergist to get gluten testing / sensitivity done but they couldn't do that and referred me to Charleston GI. Prior to the appointment there was some intake paperwork online to which I filled out and printed ahead of time plus provided the necessary documents to make it as smooth as possible. Waiting only took a few minutes after my appointment. They're very busy so there's stations where they do intake of checking vitals and going over health history before you see the PA or doctor. The initial appointment allows one to go over concerns and they ordered the necessary bloodwork and stool tests due to change in bowel habits. I had an appointment with Dr. Gourdin and found him to be thorough, quick, and professional with good humor. Later they go over with you the ordered tests, protocol on collection details, suggestions for places to get blood drawn, and schedule a follow up appointment weeks out. Do not go here! It is impossible to actually see an MD and the PA misdiagnosed me with a condition that would require I be on medication for the rest of my life. Instead of having me back in the office to speak to the PA or MD, a nurse casually and rudely told me over the phone as if this life changing condition was no big deal. It was a traumatic experience and when I switched doctors I was told I had been misdiagnosed and would not require the medication. read more

I had put it off long enough, but it was finally time to go in for my Star Trek Doctors appointment. The Doctor who will boldly go where no man has gone before. Honestly, it wasn't that bad. The hardest part for me was the 24 hour cleanse leading up to it, which left me with a wicked hangover, but without all the fun that would've caused a hangover in the first place. Just dehydration. They hooked me up with an IV once they found a vein that hadn't dried up from me taking every over the counter medicine that ended in -lax. 64 ounces of Gatorade has nothing on the power of Mira- and Dulca- when their powers combine. Everyone was super friendly from the moment I checked in until the moment I checked out. Dr Basile is my new friend, but my new best friend was the anesthesiologist who knocked me out for the procedure. Best nap I've had in days. The apple juice they let me drink after the procedure was probably the best tasting apple juice I've had, but it may be because of the extreme dehydration and drugs wearing off that made it all the more better. Anyway, here's to hoping I don't have to visit them ever again, but if I do, I'm happy to know that I'll be cared for and treated with dignity. March, 2024: This practice offers the fast food approach to healthcare - get em in and get em out. When you are awake enough from the procedure to move, a nurse will hand you your clothes and a written summary of the procedure. It will be up to you to decipher. Prior to the procedure, if you have questions, good luck getting a timely call back. If their one size fits all approach doesn't somehow work well for you, you will encounter an attitude of indifference. This current experience was very different than the one experienced 5 years ago. In the future, I will be opting for a more individualized plan of care with feedback post procedure and a staff who seems to care about their patients. read more

I would not recommend Charleston GI. My father was very ill, begging for an emergency appointment. The scheduling staff would not listen and told him he had to wait for his appointment that was in 4 weeks. In that time he became weak and unable to eat. When he did go to his appointment finally to get an endoscopy done, by Dr. Lawerence, he was told he had a cancerous mass and they would get back to him in 2 days to confirm the diagnosis. 5 days later while sitting in the ER of MUSC, Charleston GI calls to say he has lymphoma with no direction of what to do. By then we are now relying on someone at MUSC to tell who to talk to. there was never any follow up from Dr. Lawerence, on if we heard from an oncologist or even a suggestion of an oncologist. Sadly, 2 weeks from Dr. Lawerence's office calling him, he passed away. Shame on them read more

At 6:30 a.m. I was greeted by Charleston GI's upbeat, cheery Petra who checked me in. I discovered everyone I encountered was pumped and ready to rock and roll. Shout-outs to Jo Ann, Parker. April, Melanie, and Shavonna! All professional, personable, accommodating, caring, amazing people! As is my custom I had no fear. Not in my DNA. I am unable to recall if it was Jo Ann or Melanie who inserted the needle for the IV. Aha! It was Melanie! I'm what's known as a "hard stick." I've been stuck up to eight times by nurses trying to locate a good vein. However she nailed it straightaway-- and, incredibly, I had no bruise or needle mark later! Freaking amazing! Now to the docs: Chris Lawrence, M.D. performed the colonoscopy assisted by anesthesiologist Richard Fishman, M.D. They were great! An enjoyable experience with a fun team of pros. Yeah, fun. You read it right. I must confess consuming the requisite gastrointestinal Roto-Rooter cocktails at home before surgery was not pleasant. I viewed it as a flushing of toxins -- an *influencer* Gwyneth Paltrow-promoted colon cleanse -- rather than being held hostage for hours on my throne. You need a colonoscopy? Between scheduling my appointment, scheduling the ultrasounds/procedures, the surgery and the before and follow up appointments were a breeze. The staff was helpful, able to answer all of my questions and help with the insurance side of things. The surgery and other procedures I had done went well- the surgical center, located inside the building, was clean and organized. The nurses kept me comfortable and calm when I was having a nervous breakdown about it! Dr. Shores, Trish & Denise took wonderful care of me today. I had my long overdue colonoscopy and endoscopy. Yay! This place is top of the line professional from end to end. They are awesome and even though the news was good, their work is even better. From my intake appointment through the smooth procedures and the docs explanation of all the work and results I couldn't be happier. It's not like this is something to really look forward to, butt if you're in need of these services then look no further, this is the place where it all comes out. Dr. Nevin and the staff at Charleston GI are my go-to for all things GI!! I am 69 and been getting a colonoscopy every 3 years! My dad died from colon cancer that went undetected until it had metastasized to his liver and passed 3 years later largely because he did not have an ongoing relationship with a quality GI doctor and clinic. Went for a hemorrhoid that wasn't hurting. They made it worse and I've been in pain every day since. They referred me to a real surgeon with Roper St Francis who informed me it isn't even a hemorrhoid. So Charleston GI took $400, wasted a month of my time on and off, and gave me a new problem i didn't have prior to my visit. If they had examined me none of this would have happened. Instead they only spoke with me and sent me on my way with a scrip. They are just another doctor writing bs scrips looking to take your money and get you out asap to get the next person in. If the pain and damage from them is still there next month I'll have to go BACK to Roper to try to further assess what damage they might have caused. DO NOT GO HERE THEY DID NOT LISTEN. I told 4 people i wasn't in pain, Roper informed me they should have never tried treatment like that. They are a complete joke. read more

Terrible experience. Horrible burning in my throat and extremely difficult to swallow which I told them upon waking up. 15 minutes after end of procedure, high fever developed. Called them to report and they did not call me back until late afternoon after I had already sought help from my primary care physician who ordered an x-ray and put me on antibiotics. read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would, but it isn't possible. The staff is rude and the doctor I saw, Marsteller, had the personality and bedside manner of a hacksaw. My initial appointment - the "meet and greet" for which I paid $250 lasted about 5 minutes. It was, in essence, his singular pronouncement that he was going to perform a particular procedure. We really didn't need the appointment except to pad his pockets. The scheduling was all that was necessary. At the "procedure" at the West Ashley center, I was asked to sign a release about their labs. I told them I wanted my labs to go to a lab that was in my insurance network. They told me they had agreements with all the labs. Surprise! I just got a bill for over $1000 because they sent my lab work to a lab that was out of network. That must be difficult to do with Aetna. Maybe it's like the drug they prescribed for me and every other person I heard coming out of recovery - perhaps they have another arrangement with the pharmaceutical rep? Seriously, as I sat waiting for 45 minutes for my "procedure" I listened to the "physicians" talking to the patients as they came back from their own procedures and each and every one of them got a prescription for the same thing. Each of them. It's difficult to imagine we all would need the same thing. I would stay away from these people and I will never go back to these idiots. Such a mistake. I've already spoken to my referring physician, for whom I have the utmost respect, and he is horrified. I hope you are as well. read more

Don't let them nickel and dime you for everything. They gave me an unnecessary follow up appointment after my procedure and after waiting an hour for a ten minute exam they charged me $155. I was led to believe after the procedure that the follow up was part of it. I feel taken advantage of since I was still under the effects of anesthesia. read more

I was referred by my primary doctor. The person who called me to set up for screening colonoscopy was rude and very impatient. She did not listen to me and was more concerned about running out the door at 1pm on Friday which is when they close. I canceled the appnt and will seek services elsewhere. They are worst than MUSC GI department. read more
