They accommodated my early arrival, and the procedures both went well to the best of my knowledge. Expectations and procedures were explained in full and I was never anxious or left in the dark. No thanks. I just…read moremoved here and need a new specialist so after some Googling, came across this practice. I have a no referral insurance policy but a $1300/pp deductible. Not having to go to a PC doctor to get a referral to a specialist definitely saves some coin. Unless you try to go to this practice. I called to make an appointment, and they refused to see me unless a PC doctor referred me specifically to them. I have never heard of this before - I tried to explain that I had been seeing a GI specialist where I used to live and it is a known GI issue and since my insurance doesn't require referrals, can't I just come in? To which they said no. So, they want me to find a new PC doctor, wait for a new patient appointment to be available, pay the Aetna negotiated rate to see that doc (probably $2-300 bucks for a 5 minute conversation that ends with, "yeah, you need to see a GI specialist.") then wait for an available new patient slot at their practice. This practice clearly doesn't give a shit about helping patients, just making sure they pump as much money out of patients as possible.

I had been a patient of Dr. Smith at Charleston GI for years. He's a very nice and friendly doctor…read more Last, year, my insurance company refused to cover a prescription for Humira, which I had been taking with minimal to no side effects for years, I asked the nurse for help. She was extremely rude and unhelpful. I was then switched to a biosimilar, and months later I experienced significant side effects. I left several messages with the nurse to have Dr. Smith call me to no avail. I then obtained insurance with a new company hoping to get back on Humira. The insurance company representative told me that my doctor needed to submit a prior authorization form. I asked the nurse to do so and to copy me, particularly since she refused to speak with the insurance representative or allow me to speak directly with the doctor. Apparently, she never submitted it. I found a new doctor, and within one week I was approved for Humira again.

On July 30, 2025, I had an endoscopy at Charleston GI. At my initial consultation, a dilation was…read morenever discussed. On the day of the procedure, dilation was suddenly added without meaningful time to consider or consent. After the procedure, I was discharged with no pain medication. Later that day, when I called in severe pain, my wife was told to drive to the office to pick up a paper prescription. It was written incorrectly and rejected at my pharmacy, leaving me in unmanaged pain and public humiliation as the pharmacist suggested I was attempting to pass a fake prescription. That evening, I called Charleston GI's after-hours service and waited over an hour for a return call. When the physician finally called, he was dismissive, laughed at my situation, and told me I could "sue" if I was unhappy. No meaningful care was provided. In the following days, I made multiple attempts to resolve the situation. I contacted the office, delivered a letter in person, and later sent certified mail and faxed notices. Despite these efforts, I remained in pain, unable to sleep, eat, or work. Even after eventually receiving a corrected prescription, the damage was already done. Patients deserve informed consent, competent prescriptions, and supportive aftercare. I did not receive that here. Based on my experience and failed attempts to resolve it directly with Charleston GI, I would not recommend this practice for yourself or your loved ones.

I had issues that was in need of immediate attention since my surgeon appointment is not until the end of the month. I walked in just to ask a question as to what I can do in the interim since I was very concerned. They understood the issue and brought me back for a quick examination with Dr Gourdine. He was able to get over a prescription and other advice how to control the issue until I can see the surgeon. This was unbelievable. Their ethics, patient understanding and 'Do no harm' is alive and well at this practice.

I absolutely cannot say enough positive things about this office and their team! Talk about making a person feel very comfortable, at ease and not like just another number. From the appointment booking, initial visit, checking in, to the actual procedure and check out... just wow! I felt respected, valued and like they actually cared about my wellbeing. The facilities are very modern, bright, clean and comfortable. The waiting area for your accompanying loved one is also welcoming. There is ample parking, fully wheelchair accessible with automatic doors. The icing on the cake? Receiving a thank you card from the office for having been a patient. Two thumbs up and absolutely recommend this facility and their staff. Thank you, Dr. Smith!
