If there had not been this small statue of a seated man with an amazing moustache, I would never have learned about this great man who helped to make Brussels what it is today.
Charles Buls (or Karel Buls) was the Mayor of the city from 1881 to 1899. It was at his orders that policemen had to be able to speak both French and Dutch, as well the bilingual signposting throughout the city. It's why street signs are in both languages today.
The fountain is in the Place Agoraplein, quite close to the Grand Palace. His moustache is very well polished, so I'm going to assume that touching it brings some sort of luck. So I did!
