It takes a certain degree of planning - first of all, you have to go in an even year (there was one this year, the next is in 2010), then there are the exact dates of the carpet as it only lasts for two weeks. And just when you've cracked all that, turning up to Grand Place and looking at a sea of petals from ground level isn't particularly impressive, so you need to go the final mile and pay EUR3 or so to get into the Town Hall, queue up patiently, climb the steps to the tower and view it from above on the balconies (though to be fair, you pass some excellent and interesting rooms in the Town Hall as you wait to get to a balcony). It's worth it though. The 2006 carpet had rotating flowerbeds on, and when you consider just how many thousands of flowerheads have been diligently pressed into moss, it makes Derbyshire well dressing look like child's play.

The 315 ft tall in Brabantine Gothic style tower was completed in 1455. Above the roof is pinnacled octagonal openwork. At the summit is a 16 ft tall gilt metal statue of Saint Michael, the patron saint of the City of Brussels, slaying a dragon.

They are all over the city and there is a comic strip route you can take and discover them all. Places I saw them in my trip were buildings, walls, museums, galleries, comic book shops etc. We actually found the history behind the comics in our walking tour. The tour guide highlighted them and stopped to discuss some of them. If you do not want to do a walking group tour related to comic books etc...You can discover them on your own or check out all the locations with their visiting Brussels website - https://www.brussels.be/comic-book-route It's definitely a fun visual way to see this city. Side Note- Don't forget to buy classic comic books. Ton of book stores sell them throughout the city.

The European Parliament complex in Brussels is a super neat set of buildings in the EU's de facto…read morecapital. You can walk right by the area as a tourist and not know what you're looking at (aside from a bunch of cool buildings), but once you know what those buildings are and their purpose and history, it's even cooler! There are tours within these buildings like seeing the Hemicycle (where the EU members meet), the Parlamentarium (an interactive exhibit of EU history), and the House of European History. If you don't have time to attend one of the interior tours, or they're not open to the public at that time, the exterior of the European Parliament is just as neat. The campus that houses the Parliament buildings is the Espace Léopold (Leopoldruimte) and the space itself is very well upheld and beautiful. There is an outdoor courtyard for visitors called Esplanade Solidarność that is the connection between the Parliament Buildings, and it's a good spot to sit and have a coffee or sandwich during your visit. In Espace Léopold, there are also two pieces of the Berlin Wall, that were open to the public when we saw them, but seem to be encased in glass now from what I've seen. Still, they are very interesting to see in person, even behind glass. Whether you're seeing it from the outside or inside, a visit to the European Parliament complex while you're in Brussels is definitely worthwhile - just be sure you plan ahead if you're wanting to do any tours to make sure your dates are available.

It is a complete contrast to the old town. Modern, sleek, and very large. It's Brussels equivalent contrast to Valencia's City of Arts and Sciences, where there's an old town and then a futuristic area not too far away. Unfortunately the main publicly available exhibits are not open on Sunday so the architecture is all i had. However it looks pretty awesome at night and it's a vast structure. If youre into politics and economics im sure there holds a bit more educationally. but to have the whole place to yourself in the middle of the night is pretty awesome.

Fun stop in Brussels! The Atomium is super cool to see up close, and the visit starts with an…read moreelevator ride straight to the top for awesome city views--you can even spot Mini‑Europe from up there. After that, you walk through the different spheres, including one with the history of the 1958 World's Fair and some fun light shows. Overall, a unique and interesting place to explore. We got the combo ticket with Mini‑Europe and the Design Museum, which made it a great little day trip.
