No one likes getting a root canal but the experience at Dr Mann's was as good as one could be expected.

I was originally referred to them for a root canal by my long term family dentist who I moved away from. I haven't had any issues with the tooth since and my visits for cleanings always go well. Nicole and Dr. Siegel are very attentive and do a great job! They try to be as helpful as they can with payment issues due to insurance policy changes at the front desk also.

The dental assistant did not even know the names of the tools the Dr. was asking for and unfortunately for my mouth was not knowledgeable about using the equipment (you know when the dentists asks the assistant if she if left handed... things are not going well... and clearly they have never worked together before). Beyond the associates at the practice, the processes for checking equipment, starting in the morning are not in place. Equipment can fail, but one would expect for the room to be checked prior to bringing in the patient - not after the numbing and when you need to start using the tools. Bottom line this is a poorly run dentist factory with poor processes and training/hiring. would not recommend.

My daughter was a patient here for several years. I will preface this review by saying my daughter…read moregot along well with each of the dentists she saw over the years and they seemed to have good rapport with her. I have no doubt that the cleanings she received were good. Hence, 3 stars instead of 1. I held off on writing this review, but my daughter has seen multiple dentists now and I feel it might help other patients. We had a billing error after our first visit as they'd submitted the wrong code to our insurance and then tried billing us directly over and over for a cleaning, which was covered by our insurance. I wasted hours of my time on the phone with both Riccobene and our insurance. I even had a 3-way call with our insurance company and Riccobene to get it settled. I'd been told the issue had been fixed, but I kept receiving bills in the mail. It was extremely frustrating, but it was a mistake- which happens sometimes- so we stayed with the office. I started getting rubbed the wrong way by Riccobene during 2020 with the up-charge for PPE during the pandemic, which by comparison to other dentists, was well in excess of what other offices in the area were charging (as discovered in a discussion on NextDoor). It was annoying, but maybe just a sign of the times, and that wasn't enough to deter me from the office even after the billing error, so we stayed a few more years. Perhaps this started to generally sway my perception of the office as a money-grab, though. It was at my daughter's final visit that I really started to question the practice. After my daughter had been seen, I was told that she had some cavities. As a late teen, she'd never had a single cavity before, but I didn't necessarily doubt the possibility of a cavity or two. We would have been paying out of pocket for the fillings, which according to their invoice, would have been just shy of $700 (all out of pocket expense since it was not covered by our insurance). They were fully aware of this because they stated that our insurance wouldn't be covering it and the expense would be out of pocket. It was when we checked out after the appointment that things started feeling off and I got an uneasy feeling. It felt a whole lot like we just walked into a used car sales lot with an aggressive sales team that was really pushing us to schedule the fillings immediately. It gave me such a bad feeling that I decided to hold off on scheduling the fillings. Instead, I went with my gut and I got a second opinion at a different dental office. My daughter has been seen at two different dentist offices since then and she's been seen every 6 months. One visit was the same week we'd been seen at Riccobene. I've never heard of cavities magically disappearing, especially within a few days, but according to the other offices, she did not have any cavities then and she still does not have any cavities. I left the office after that last visit with Riccobene feeling like they were aggressively trying to charge us out of pocket to fill cavities that perhaps didn't even exist. After being seen elsewhere, I feel it more strongly about it. I'm very glad I didn't schedule the fillings on the spot or pay the ~$700 out of pocket while being pressured to do so. Perhaps it was an accidental misdiagnosis (per cavity), but if you're paying out of pocket and things don't feel right, I'd suggest asking for solid proof of the issues or getting a second opinion elsewhere before moving forward. I'm glad I did.

As a follow up to my initial review I want to make this review clearer. I am suffering from NERVE…read morePAIN after getting my tooth filled months ago by Dr. Austin at Riccobene and Associates in the Durham office. I never had nerve pain after having a filling is done anywhere!! I believe she caused pressure on the nerve or damaged it. In my opinion Dr. Austin is incompetent and unethical. for the following reasons: 1. Dr. Austin caused me to have nerve pain after giving me a filling months ago and refuses to take responsibility that she caused the nerve pain and wants to send me to an oral surgeon maybe even needing a root canal. What? Why didn't she test the tooth prior to filling it to determine the condition of the tooth since it had a hole in it? I had no pain prior to her giving me a filling and now the nerve pain is more frequent. 2. The day of the treatment Dr. Austin did not show me what tooth she was crowning. The Dental Assistant told her the number of the tooth and that was it. Dr. Austin and Dr. Don made a decision prior to the day of treatment and changed my treatment plan without informing me about any changes prior to treatment. Initially, I was informed that I needed a crown on a chipped tooth. I was never told I needed a filling on another tooth. 3. In the Xrays after Dr. Austin crowned my tooth it is clear that the tooth next to the crowned tooth, has a hole in it. When I brought it to her attention she said she can fill it. Why wasn't I informed I needed a filling on that tooth on my initial treatment consultation and before they crowned the other tooth? Because she had not planned to fill the tooth which id incompetent. Any reasonable dentist would have included it in my treatment plan. When Dr. Austin filled my tooth, the filling was too high so she shaved it down. And, said she doesn't want to over treat the tooth in spite of me now having nerve pain. This makes me wonder if the filling was the BEST treatment for that tooth. At the end of the day, I have nerve pain in the tooth that was filled by Dr. Austin that I did not have prior to the filling. The tooth I wanted crowned is not crowned and I was told by Dr. Austin's Dental Assistant that my tooth could never be filled again. Which means that it needs a crown. I also got opinions from other Dentists who examined the tooth she filled and they said the tooth needs to be crowned. Which supports why I wanted that tooth crowned to start with. The most important part of a dental treatment plan is communication with the patient. No doctor has the authority to change treatment plans and not discuss the new treatment plan with the patient. It is the patient's right to be fully informed before moving forward with any treatment. Beware!!! Make sure to READ the form they have you sign before you have a procedure done even if they say they are ready for you. Because, they will refer to that form if there are complications. Ethically, I feel it is helpful for the Dentist and Dental Assistants to discuss that clause each time with the patient. It is unfair to quote that clause after something goes wrong and give themselves a way out by justifying that you as the patient are at fault because you signed the form without reading it. What if you can't read? Make sure you have access to your records by requesting them frequently. Use your phone to record all your conversations with Dr. Austin and the staff. The clinicals may not match the conversations you have with the Dental Assistants and the Dentist. Again, you can be at a disadvantage because it is your word against the their word. Dr. Austin will not speak with me personally because she is too busy. That is why documentation is very important when dealing with this office. Personally, I am not going back to Dr. Austin because I feel she is unethical and frankly incompetent as a dentist. I want a dentist that is honest, and transparent. Instead, of being transparent, and honest about our conversations, she is using clinical documentation to dispute my claims.
