I recommend this business, the Amish couple behind the counter were involved in giving two of their three dogs a slice of sausage as a treat. Lucky dogs! It was difficult to make a decision among overwhemlming choices of sausages. I saw the smoked ham on the list and they brought one out for me. I decided to purchase it, the price was reasonable of about $45.00. I also tried the Pastromi flavored sausage which was slightly spicy and very tasty, a smoked beef rib eye steak, the maple and tarragon kielbasa and the candy ginger sausage which she said is "a good one". Also some maple bacon.I am looking forward to trying all of these treats and going back for more! read more

The sausage and cheese here are seriously some of the best I have every tasted. Me and my brother got such things as maple sausage, smoked cheddar and mint sausage. The man who made this place use to be a 4-star chief who converted to the Amish faith. He seems really passionate about his craft and the food here is shows that. The family that owns this place were very family oriented and their children are nice too. The interior is very old school and you feel like your taken back 100 years to when there wasn't modern grocery stores. The place is a bit far from Portland but if you love food and wish to make the track the food here is worth it. They are an Amish family so please be aware they only accept cash. read more

Simply the finest handcrafted sausages and meats I have ever had. When I say handcrafted that is exactly what I mean. This business is an Amish owned and operated business, they do not use electricity so everything is done by hand and with traditional Amish tools and physical labor. Matt is a master at creating unique flavor combinations that are bold, bright and true to the taste of meat he is using. The protein is always the star ingredient and the way he blends the spices and flavors is just wonderful. When you first arrive take your time to observe the meats and cheeses but most importantly stand silently away from the counter and smell the smells and observe the kind and thoughtful interactions of Matt with his meats, sausages, cheeses and most importantly his customers. This man is thoughtful, smart with a slightly dry sense of humor, he is never in a hurry and takes his time with each customer. I had a job up at crunchy Unity College and I was wondering what to eat for lunch so I asked and they said go see the funky Amish dude, he sells sausages that are to die for. OK, a weird Amish dude, I said, are we in Central Maine or in Western Pennsylvania? No, No, there is an Amish community here in Unity, we are not playing with your head!! Just down the road. So I drove up and down the road looking for this joint. Turns out it does have a tiny little sign where you should turn off, but at 55 MPH you would be excused for not being able to read it. What I ended up doing was going to this wonderful retro style general store ("Amish bakery, community store, and metal roofing") like you have still in Maine, selling everything from double-headed axes to freshly-baked fruit pies. Filled with Amish people like out of the movies or something!! Never having seen real Amish people, I was super freaked out. It's not just a Harrison Ford vehicle, they really do exist!! And they directed me back to the sausage store, which turns out to be about a mile down an unpaved mudtrail, past the Insta-Shed collection, around the pony enclosure, and then you stumble upon a shack that looks like it was put up about 6 months ago, all fresh-hewn timbers and with that "new shed smell" that real Mainers crave. Well, there was an "OPEN" shingle (made of wood, of course) hanging out, so that was a good start, as it turns out that this place is only open a few days a week. Inside: indeed a huge Amish dude with the full-on ZZtop-style beard, the broad-brimmed hat that puts the 15 in the 10-gallon, coarse-cut cloth, a New Testament on the counter, and a huge smile and a welcome stranger you have never been here before?? This is a one-man show, this dude does all the work himself. Making the sausages, and there are many varieties listed on the multiple chalkboards hanging behind him. So many sausages: smoked duck, chorizo, bratwurst, long ones, dark ones, fat ones, And cold cuts: hams and bologna and this and that. I just picked up a random set of 4 links and a half-pound of sweet baloney. OK, cut to the chase, how were the goods? I would say, and I have eaten innumerable sausages all over the world, that these are some of the best that I have ever tasted. Fresh, smoky, chunky, intense, primeval, like the force of nature Amish giant who turns them out. If I were not under the control of an Inner Vegan, I would consider moving to Unity and assuming an obligate sausage diet. The product here is that good. But talking to the guy, he seemed pretty ambivalent about his profession. He seems to really like making the sausage, maybe not so much selling it. And I guess he gets lots of crap from the health authorities because he does not seem to use electricity to cool the meat. That's Big Government for you!! It would be a shame if they shut him down, because this is a real Maine-style treasure: Strong, Authentic, Opinionated, Tasty. read more

This is the absolutely BEST chacuterie that we have been in (not to mention that we are Polish and have had tons of kielbasa!) Matthew is a wonderful, passionate and talented human being! We met his beautiful and warm-hearted family, who was very kind to us! We are a big fan of Matthew's mentality and shared some great conversations with him. We are so excited to have met Matthew and his family and created a lifelong friendship! The sausages and cheeses are DELICIOUS and Matthew's method of making them are genius. I've been looking for good sausages ever since I came to America from Germany in 2010. Sure there are good things in fancy stores in big cities, but a small store like this where you can literally try anything and it's all wonderful? I doubt that you'll find many examples. I've been there three times so far and always buy a lot of different items, including the smoked cheese, and everything has been great. And not just crazy salty like those sausages often are. We also had fresh Bratwurst once and grilled them ourselves - perfect. Couldn't have been better in the Old Country... Charcuterie is the best thing that could have happened to us up here in Maine. Well worth a detour from I95... But don't be in a hurry. The place is not electrified -except for a little solar powered fan :). read more
