A $4,000.00 Solid Wood Exterior Door, should NOT have a veneer that peals off and then cracks after 2 years. Well, Simpson doors do. I contacted Jamie (Chapman's Door Sales Associate) numerous times, while he was polite, he was ultimately useless. Chapman Lumber had NO INTEREST in helping us out. When we disclosed that this door was falling apart in the home of an Architect, who regularly ordered Simpson Doors, by specification for the 100s of home he designed, it fell further on deaf ears. Appearantly Simpson Doors, that are distributed by Brockway-Smith have a very long list of items that will disqualify your warranty.....including exposure to weather. Even though this was a major screw job it remains comical that Chapman Lumber representatives actually say those words outloud. "Your solid wood exterior door will fall apart if it is exposed to the weather." This after blaming the cabot stain and poly urethane we used, and the demensions of the over hang above the door. Never buy a Simpson Door. Stay away from Chapman Lumber, and avoid any product distributed by Brockway-Smith. Very poor quality and zero costumer service. read more

Today I decided to go and visit my local hardware store. I had a great experience before today. Especially with the pro desk, with Mr. Lee. But today was terrible! I was asked about my service dog not once but twice and I was told thats dogs aren't allow. I was very turned off by that! I always make sure before entering any establishment that my service dog is properly dressed and has his vest and you can clearly see he is working. Sign is visible on his vest. I definitely felt very uncomfortable and stopped my shopping and left the store. I will never go back there! The employees were more concerned about my dog being inside doing his job. Then help me as the customer. I hope the owner acknowledges this complaint. As a veteran it's difficult sometimes to even get out of the house, my dog definitely plays a huge role in making that happen. read more

First of all I'm not from the area I was sent to a local true value which didn't carry the blank I needed. I went to a nearby locksmith and they didn't have anyone there to make a copy of the key I needed. They recommended another locksmith which I could not find. While driving back I noticed Chapman Lumber and decided to stop. As soon as I walked in I was greeted. They have a new key machine and lots of blanks. The lady that helped me did a great job making my keys. I checked to make sure the key worked when I got back to the car and noticed that the keys work better than the original key. Staff is a mixed bag, from nice and helpful to miserable. I would have preferred to be able to order the lumber and pay over the phone rather than have to drive over an hour to swipe my card and sign a receipt and be disrespected by the cashier. The guy that checked me out was visibly bothered rolling his eyes and blowing air... just in a miserable mood that I was interrupting his morning to complete my order. My biggest regret is that I let him ruin my day with is negative demeaning attitude. I expect so much more when I am spending thousands of dollars and premium prices SMH. I'll do my best to buy from elsewhere in the future and only bother them again if my company really has no other choice. read more

This place is unprofessional at its best. Things were thought to improve with the new management but they haven't. The same B.S. just different faces with the same crappy attitudes, no wonder they can't keep good help. They went from Building supply to hardware, not a place for contractors or anyone with a clue. My husband and I recently embarked on a huge project to repaint the exterior of our house. We went to Chapman Lumber's paint department for help choosing the best paint for our job. I was very impressed with how knowledgable both the women in the paint department were, and how willing they were to put in the time and effort to make sure that I got the exact paint I needed to do the job right. Update March 2016: something must be in the water in this place, as the attitude of Chapman Lumber's employees remain the same, meaning extremely poor, disrespectful and overall Little concern for the customer. I was in the market for two fire doors and I had someone to install them. I had contacted Home Depot, but I figured I give someone local such as Chapman Lumber, the business. Upon calling Chapman Lumber, I got the same nonsense, it appeared that the person went to the phone did not care and was unwilling to help. I said to them that I needed one 32 inch door and one 36 inch door, along with information on the hinges and which way it's wrong. The representative asked me what the width was and I told them I did not know. Then I felt that he berated me, since he told me I should know what the overall width of the door was, otherwise he couldn't give me a price or even a ballpark price. Obviously I did not use Chapman Lumber, drove to Home Depot, picked up the two doors, and had them installed the next day. It is very sad that the local businesses continue to disappoint. I would not even dream of calling Chapman Lumber or given them one dollar number mine one cent for anything, based on the attitude and poor customer service. read more

This summer I spent $7000.00 in materials to do a deck... I had six pieces that were sitting in my garage so I called Chapman and asked if we can bring them back, I was told no problem, leave them in the truck and when you get here we will pull them off for you... I asked, are you sure, because it's a 45 min ride... Yes sir... Come in and talk to the guys in the front and we will issue you a credit... I get there it was a cluster fuck, excuses, etc... at the end of all this they refused to honor their word... I then asked to speak to a manager this sarcastic SOB Tommy said I am the manager... Honestly I didn't like this piece of shit from day one but my contractor just said please and I obliged. I also added that I have two more jobs on schedule from the contractor that recommended them and if I find out the material is coming from Chapman he will lose the job... He said sorry you feel that way... So in essence there willing to lose thousands of dollars over 6 pieces of Trex That makes no sense at all... The owners of Chapman should be embarrassed... I not only have the two jobs with my contractor, but I just put in an application to do a 20 lot subdivision guess where yup Thomaston !!!!   trust me Chapman I am sure your competition will love an opportunity to earn my business!!! and I just got off the phone with the contractor and advised him of what happened this afternoon  and told him that if he brings one nail from your store he's out!!! Great way to do business guys... You should earn the award for the worst customer service in town... and I will be sure to advise Ace of your actions !!! read more

I go to Chapman Lumber all the time. I do home repair and renovation on rental properties in Litchfield, as well as my own home. And it doesn't matter what I need, they almost always have it or can get it. And what is rare for a large big box store is their custom cabinetry department. And it is never crazy busy so the service is relaxed and friendly. read more

A friend recommended Chapman Lumber for the materials we needed to re-build our deck. We were very impressed with their in-house deck display, which shows a variety of deck brands, styles and colors. We were especially impressed with Glenn, who advised us on what to consider when choosing from different styles, and versions of the materials, and held our hand throughout the process of purchasing different options for the deck. I went to Chapman Lumber to replace a solid furnace door with a louver door. Since Chapman does not do the work themselves, they recommended a customer of theirs, A&M Home Improvements. Two guys own this; Mark and Al. I called for an appointment and they came right away. They measured the door and gave me an estimate. From there, they ordered the door and called for an installation date. They showed up on time, were professional and extremely neat. Slow, Disagreeable. They wanted me to sign a contract that gave me one day to check if items were OK and gave them 10 days to deliver.

These guys have no clue what they are doing. Besides ordering my door backwards, they then told my contractor to stain a fiberglass door with gel stain. It looks awful! And not the fault of the painter. The gel smeared and clotted and looks like a 2 year old did the job. I have people asking where are the $13,000 new door system I had installed. And the look on their faces when I say - that's them... I spoke with the door manufacturer who was very disappointed in the advice they gave my contractor. They sent me the correct stain; however, now it will cost me over $2000 more to have these stripped and re-stained! Buyers with them beware!! read more

We have been working on new deck. We got quote for product, it was accepted by us and we were told when it would be delivered. That was a few weeks ago. So far we have had 4 or more deliveries. And still do not have all the product. The latest delivery was ONE post. this was a project that could have been completed in under a week and it now going over a month. the wrong product was part of one "order". Never were we told things were on backorder when we accepted the quote and paid for product. Still waiting, and waiting and waiting. read more

I used Chapman Lumber for my kitchen remodeling project. Beautiful cabinets, but there were numerous mistakes made by the designer by not taking into consideration where pipes were located. Furthermore, she was specifically told to keep in mind that the tile floor was not being replaced. She agreed, but totally ignored the request which resulted in me having to go to 4 different places finding tile close enough to match. I was short filler pieces for the crown molding which delayed the project completion by a week. I was also short two knobs. To make matters worse, they had a wrong delivery address that wasn't even close to mine! When I called to complain about these items, they acted like they were doing me a big favor by giving me items that should have been on site to begin with. They were nasty and didn't even once apologize. They wouldn't let me return a box of unused tile at the end or even partially compensate me. When I mentioned about thinking about filing a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, the owner was confrontational saying in my face: "You want to go that route???" instead of trying to meet me halfway. read more

I stopped into Chapman recently shopping for new cabinets and granite countertops for my new addition I am building. I saw one woman sitting with a customer on the sales floor discussing cabinets and another man sitting at a desk near hers. As we browsed around for about 15 minutes we were not approached at all or greeted by anyone. Finally I asked the man if he could assist us and very rudely states "I don't deal with cabinets. You need to wait for her" and then proceeds to ignore us again. Meanwhile the woman doesn't even acknowledge our existence or at least indicate to us that she will be awhile longer so I don't stand there forever. You know, customer service. After being there for 45 minutes without a mere Hello I decided that this place wasn't worthy of my money. I instead brought my $14,000 somewhere else. If the customer service is this terrible now I can't imagine if I have a problem. I use to work in retail and my boss would have my head if I ever treated a customer like that. A suggestion to Chapman Lumber....get your employees some customer service training. I'm all about buying local but not in this store. read more
