Recently I had an odd occurrence with my steering and a stalling issue so my neighbor suggested Chapman Auto Repair. Cowan was great about reviewing issues with me and suggesting the least expensive repair options. He kept me informed by text and phone. I was very pleased with the outcome and impressed with what he charged for labor. If you have ever been to a chain shop or dealer you know they charge 'book rate' hours even if they take less time to complete the repair. Horrible business. They are very rude to my son, a student. Even we left a message and tell them not to repair. They did it anyway. They changed over 1500 for AC repair and will take cash only. My son paid by debit card and the money went through. But they refuse to release the car and still insist my son to get cash. Now the money was post to their account, they demond $60 per day storage fee. They are trying to bully a young people who don't have any experience. We are considering a legal action. We will never come back and higher do not recommend anyone to go. read more

Mr. Cowan Yip is an honest mechanic and very thorough! My hubby and I were driving from the Port in Los Angeles after a cruise on a Saturday morning and broke down in Orange County. Naturally this happens on a holiday weekend. We had already planned to stay in Anaheim for a few days so we had the car towed to Chapman Auto Repair. It is so hard to know where to go when you do not live in the area. It makes the situation even more difficult when you don't know who to trust. Cowan did everything possible to get us back on the road when we needed to leave and the car had many problems. We were driving a 2001 BMW 330I with 382,000 miles on it so you can imagine that the car may have a few issues. He helped us pick and choose the best things to do to get the car back on the road and not cost a fortune. Mr Yip is honest, he is nice and he does a great job. We believe his prices are reasonable as well. He worked on the car on the holiday and we were on the road on Tuesday morning. We drove 350 miles to the central valley after he worked on the car and we are so thankful we used him in this very stressful situation. This review is long overdue, but some time ago, smoke started to come out from under the hood of my car as I was driving. I had no idea what was wrong or what to expect in terms of repairs. I parked my car on a random street and a passerby recommended that I take my car around the corner to Chapman Auto, and I'm so glad he did! Cowan (the owner?) attended to my car right away. The problem was with the radiator and he replaced it for a very reasonable price. He also suggested what other repairs I should consider doing in the near future given the age of my car and provided very specific maintenance tips, but he did not try *at all* to push those services on me. He knew I wasn't from the area and recommended that I have my "regular" mechanic take a look after I got back home. I appreciated his helpfulness and the fact that he didn't try to price-gouge me, knowing I was basically stranded. I'm very grateful for his service! read more

First of all, DO NOT go to this business if you need a SMOG test on your car. This review is solely based on my experiences with this business from a SMOG viewpoint. I brought my car there for a smog test on a Saturday around 1:00 PM (he closes at 2:00 PM FYI) and he proceeds to do a TEST only. It's roughly $55 and change with a certificate. However, if you don't pass you still pay bottom line. So he starts working on my car and casually speaks to a customer (I'm assuming) at the same time. They go on conversation tangents and walk away from the job from time to time. If you like this treatment than you definitely want to give your hard earned money to this fellow. 1:45PM rolls around and he informs us one of my hoses is the wrong one and informs me that I failed "visually." You may ask no big deal right? Well, he did a brief inspection in the beginning before putting my car on the rollers so he waits to tell me right before closing that I failed. Had he informed me earlier, I would have had enough time to replace the part and bring the vehicle back in a timely manner. Again, I'm not savy on SMOG procedures but I'm assuming he knew that from the beginning but "maybe" decided to wait until the end to notify me. The following Tuesday I return to Chapman Auto Repair around 5:15PM'ish, he closes at 6:00 PM FYI. He proceeds to tell me that he's no longer working on cars and that it's too late in the day. He and his mechanic were NOT working on any cars at the moment so after a long day of work I just eave. Saturday rolls around the same week and I come back to hopefully put an end to this ordeal. HINT: if you guys need to come back to him make sure you have all your paper-work. He does NOT like to look up records and what not. HINT: make sure anything he says from day one he puts into writing (he has selective memory)!!! There you have it folks, you can make your own informed decisions but I can assure you that he isn't the only SMOG place in town so if you want the short end of the stick and have him take your money ... I can forward you my Paypal address and you can send me money for magic beans. read more

Terrible shop, originally quoted me $59 for smog test, I clearly asked if this included the certificate but after the test was over they wanted to change the extra money for the certificate. Also the head technician is rude and acted indifferent to me for getting work done at another shop. I would not recommend this place unless you like false pricing and attitude. read more

I've been there three times and have now come to the conclusion that while the owner seems like a nice guy, they have a strategy of up selling and manipulating customers. Took the car in for tire balance & rotation and they called to try to convince me that I needed new tires. I had already told them I have to trade my car in soon (its been recalled due to the diesel-gate scandal), so there was no way I was going to get new tires and if I had to they would be used. So he said he would not balance them if they were going to be replaced soon. Then when I got there he told me it was not urgent that the tires were fine to drive on. I avoided the big rip off of them selling me tires, but did not get the service I needed. Similar pattern with other visits: they wanted to replace the whole bumper bc one pin was missing etc. They have dollar signs in their eyes, but they do it with a smile...at least with women. I drove my car here from Seattle, and it was running pretty rough by the time I got here. I brought it to these guys because of their proximity to my hotel, and I am so glad I did. Cowan, the guy who helped me, texted me as soon as he had read the codes and an explanation for what the problem was. A few minutes later, he called to let me know what that meant, what had to be done, when it should be done (4-5 hours), and how much it should cost. 4 hours later, I received another text that my car was done and running great. When I went to pick it up, he explained in-depth what had been done, showed me the old parts and compared them to new ones, gave me tips on how to keep these issues from popping up again, and even gave me the leftover oil from the last bottle he opened. The price was almost exactly what he quoted, and when payment was taken care of, he gave us some suggestions for some things to see and do while we were there. Cowan was a super cool dude, and clearly knows and has what it takes to run a successful word-of-mouth business. If my car breaks down again in this area, I will not be upset. read more

First of all i have to start of with a response to the first comment by Caroline C.- you contradict yourself in your own comment. You want an estimate of how much itll cost to take your car apart and find the leak? But not how much itll cost to do the work? Diagnosing a car IS doing work! Its like a hospital. Do you expect to go to the doctors and have the physician give you a free check up? Thats not how life works. Anyways It's a small local shop that does good honest work. It's not a place you want to go to find a cheap solution to fix what's wrong with your car. They don't just "patch things up" they actually FIX it so it's good in the long run. Don't get me wrong, they are not over priced either. It's how the saying goes "you get what you pay for". They are a california gold shield smog check station, so they can do both test only and regular smog checks. And if your car doesn't pass they have a program where the government gives you up to 500 bucks to repair your car and make it pass. They are ASE certified also. It's a total of 3 mechanics including the owner. Everyone is very friendly and will kindly explain and show you what is going on with your car. All in all it's a great little place to take you car. You won't get ripped of or lied to. read more
