Picked up Chans House while in the area on a whim and WOW I do not regret it. The chicken tasted as good as it looks, white meat on the inside, no weird tasting pieces. My husband had the pork lo mein and it was equally as tasty. We will be back! read more

Ok first off the egg rolls are not homemade, they are the mushy frozen kind you get from the freezer at the super market! The sweet and sour chicken is also NOT what you think! It is dark meat bready chunks covered super thick overly sweet sauce (it comes in the sauce)! And our other entrée was suppose to be broccoli chicken, instead it was a container of a 50% sweet black syrupy 5-spice/anise sauce, 30% broccoli and 20% dry chicken pieces. Went on a Sunday afternoon without a phone to order and a pleasant lady came to the door and took my order. Was allowed a lunch special. Food was quickly prepared. The price and the size of the order were remarkably good. I don't live in the area and it had been quite some time since I was there last. I love Chinese food and have tried it all over the country, from Maine to San Francisco. No matter where I go, nothing compares to the Chinese food from Chan's House in Bradford, Vermont. You wouldn't expect such amazing food to come from a small town in Vermont, but every time I eat takeout food from Chan's I am convinced it is the best I've ever had. The key to Chan's House is the flavor, price, and quantity. The flavor of Chan's dishes is delectable: the lo mein noodles are soft while the vegetables are the perfect crunchiness, the crab rangoons are perfectly fried with a sweat and creamy crab filling, the tender chunks of deep fried chicken with a thick and sugary orange sauce coating over crisp broccoli, perfectly marinated cabbage and vegetable moo shi with a savory hoisin plum sauce wrapped up in warm flour pancakes. The amount of food you get for the price at Chan's House is what makes this Chinese food outstanding. For $5.95 you get 12 large crab rangoons, and for only $9.95 you get enough takeout orange chicken to last for three whole meals. I never would have stopped in at this restaurant if not for the reviews. If you're not from the area you could easily drive right past it even if you're looking for a restaurant in the immediate area. Here's a head's up for out-of-towners... it's a very nondescript storefront directly across the street from the Perry's Oil Service building and their gas station next door to that. Not nondescript is the food... It began with the bowl of fried wanton strips brought out as soon as I sat down. I usually don't eat them because my experience with them has been that they smell of old frying fat and they're hard and flavorless. But, I was hungry so I broke off a little piece just to keep my mouth busy while looking at the extensive menu. The little piece didn't smell fatty and it was almost as delicate as the thin pastry in baklava or a good Napoleon. It had a very nice aromatic too. The bowl was piled high with them, but not for long. I ordered the hot and sour soup. It was perfect for this chilly Vermont fall day. I was surprised to see shredded chicken and what I think were enoki mushrooms. Delicious and it was a bowlful instead of the usual cup. Along with my soup came an order of spring rolls. Whatever the secret of the fried wanton strips was at the core of the delicious and delicate spring rolls... six of them. Trying to decide on the entrée, I told the server (probably the chef's wife) that I like chicken, vegetables and spicy. She said happily, "Okay, we'll make that for you". It was an overabundance of tender chicken breast and the vegetables tasted cooked "just enough". I was stuffed, and considering the prices, I just hadn't figured it would be so much food. It was as good as the best Chinese food that I've had anywhere. It's almost an hour and a half drive for me, but I'll be back. read more

Chan's house charged me tonight for all the food I ordered over the phone. When I got home with the food half of it was missing so I called them and asked if they would give me back my money or give me the food I ordered over the phone and they refused to do either. They told me I needed to pay for the food I already paid for if I wanted it. Pretty sad seeing how I've gone here for years and have given them my business and they still pull this bs. Not very happy. 0/10, don't recommend. read more

We have been going here off and on for years...Did a large take-out order ($74) on Christmas Eve and the food was literally inedible. Would have taken it back if I thought they would have stood behind their food and refunded me. Tasteless, few tiny pieces of popcorn shrimp in shrimp lo mein; noodles were stuck together and over-cooked. Too much 5 spice powder in other shrimp dish making it too bitter. Egg foo young was tasteless, bland, and greasy. Had to add multiple spices just to eat it. Asked for ginger sauce for the crab rangoon; they charged me $0.50 each. When I opened the bag, both of the ginger sauce containers had opened and were spilled all over the boxes. Also, my husband found hairs in 2 of the container servings. I am done. I'm convinced the other 2 reviews are not legit based on our experience. I'm honesty not sure what I ate today. I normally wouldn't even bother to write a review on such a bust, but I need to take this 5 star rating down for future naive travelers (like us!) who otherwise wouldn't know better. 3 of us popped in mid road trip because my uncle lives in Bradford and we were meeting up with him at his house, but he wasn't home yet. I wish I had called him and asked for suggestions for lunch, but we decided to trust Yelp reviews. Big mistake. We ordered orange chicken, a crispy beef lunch special, dumplings, and a generals gau's lunch special. Our lunch specials came with fried rice and crab rangoons. The dumplings, crab rangoons, and aforementioned wantons were all palatable, although super oily, but hey, this is cheap Chinese food, on the road. We're not expecting top quality at this point. So far, we're not super impressed but we're optimistic and starving. Crappy Chinese food has its place. Then the main dishes came out. Let me just say that while the server indicated that the first plate was beef, other than the size of the fried bits, it looked exactly the same as the 2 chicken dishes. Actually all 3 were swimming in the same goopy sauce and were indistinguishable in flavor. We're pretty certain this is the only sauce they serve. Possibly more concerning was that the "beef" was white. WHITE. I'm talking about the meat, under the breading. We shrugged it off as possible pork, even though there was no other pork in he menu. It definitely was not beef. Even the fried rice was atrocious. It looked like your typical cheap fried rice but tasted awful. Like rancid cardboard. How does one ruin fried rice? Fast forward a few minutes and I am struck with serious nausea, afraid to get back in the car for the long road ahead, and one of my friends spent a few minutes in the bathroom himself, struggling with stomach issues. We were the only patrons in the restaurant, and it was painful getting our servers attention. Duck sauce, water refills, the check - all took so long to flag someone down, it was almost comical. When we got to my uncles house and informed his family where we ate, the four of them dropped their jaws in shock and disgust that we would eat there. Clearly not our best decision. I give Chan's 1 star for the price. Including tip, our dining experience for 3 came to $34. If that's all you care about, well, I guess there is worse out there. read more

Just moved to Vermont. This was the first Chinese place we tried and I would never recommend it to anybody. Asked for water and received it room temperature in disgusting cups. We were the only people in there, no music, smelled stale, unfriendly service. Upon receiving our food it looked like it was microwaved. What I order looked like gelatin, the whole dish moved as one. The only negative thing I can say is now whenever I eat Chinese food somewhere else I am always disappointed. I have been to Chinese food restaurants all across the country as well and have not found a place as good as this.
