Another missing review!!! Over 30 years ago I discovered Chango Botanica. Chances are if you aren't familiar with this type of shop and their offering then Santeria is not on your radar. An African diasporic religion that developed in Cuba in the 19th century. A mixture of West African Yoruba and the Catholic form of Christianity. This shop provides the necessities for followers or believers as they are called. In May of 2014, Roxanne K mentioned in her review, the patriarch had passed and the son intended to carry on. I talked to his son today and he continues his commitment to carry on his father's legacy for the family in supplying the needs of the Santeria community. This is a Santeria shop catering to the needs of this Afro-Cuban religion. These people are serious about their offering and surprisingly serve a large community. The upward pressure of real estate values in this area has forced a lot of businesses to cash out for huge sums. For now, this tradition continues, and its a good thing. Better than another CVS which bought one of my favorite old Mexican restaurants down the street that was 70 years old and tore it down. My husband and I first noticed Chango Botanica when we parked in their lot before a show at the Kessler. The eye-catching window displays immediately drew us in, and we made a plan to return. I'm so glad we did! Chango has an incredible selection, but the highlight of our visit was talking with Primo. We asked about a house cleansing ritual, and he knew exactly what we needed. He thoughtfully recommended a special blend from behind the counter and took the time to explain how to use it properly. Our experience was both welcoming and insightful, and I'm excited to put the cleansing ritual into practice. This place is not welcoming. There is plenty of items covered in dust. The whole vibe is off. Even the two customers who were treated like regulars were rude and looked at you like you weren't suppose to be allowed to shop as they bought something and left. Tried to buy some herbs that were priced at $3.95, when I got to the counter the man told me it was $4.98. I still wanted to purchase them seeing how I was already there, he then said $10 when I pulled out my card. So I just left them on the counter and left. Leaving I got a weird feeling and just wanted to get far away as possible. Something is off about the place. A lot of negative energy. read more

This was a neat place, especially if you are into religious candles, herbs, bath washes, figurines, voodoo. Swear to gawd they had voodoo dolls. I'm not really into that stuff, but to not tempt the spirits I didn't joke about any of it while browsing through the store. I bought two little Buddha figurines for about $2 a piece, and a scented candle that is supposed to bring me money. Cha-ching. I didn't win the lottery last night so I'm not too sure that it's going to work, but if it does, I'll let y'all know. read more

Chango Botanica is about belief... I think it's interesting to see so many types of beliefs all in one store and it can throw you back when you first step into the place. I stopped by to see what the fuss was and immediately felt overwhelmed by the place. Perhaps it was the patriarch who has recently passed watching over his sons. I think they have just about anything you can think of related to any religious belief system... tons of candles, oils, incense, bottles of "oh my what in the world that is that?" the son told me they also do readings here if you're into that kind of thing. I'll have to say that you shouldn't play with things you don't understand and this isn't some place you would go to make a joke. You get the feeling that very serious people full of belief come here to get their service needs and I believe that faith in anything can give it power. If you add those two things together... this is a pretty powerful place. Whatever your spirit guide they will be able to help you, I could tell the son intended to carry on his fathers work and stay right in the heart of Oak Cliff. Have you read the headlines lately people? Feminism has been making witches out of us ladies every since Trump took office. It's an actual thing---check it out. However, I've been on my spiritual path for over a decade now. The heart and soul of this place is magnetically beautiful. You can't find nicer human beings who will bend over backwards to help you get what you need. If you need ready made tools---come here. All sorts of candles, oils, powders, herbs, crystals, incense. On my visit, I needed white copal incense, rose buds, and a few other things. I wasn't able to find everything I needed---but honestly, that's because I make my own things. I make my own cascarilla powder, ancestor oils, and oils in general.....so it wasn't super easy to find the individual ingredients that I needed. But I was able to find so many other beautiful things here. I wish there were more plain candles in glass holders---in various colors...but nevertheless, I found a few white candles that served my purposes. What a great shop in Oakcliff that's totally worth a spin through. If you find yourself pulled to something, just ask someone what it is---you may find yourself pleasantly surprised at the coincidence of what called to you. read more
