Hidden Gem of the Rockies…read more I love thrift stores, I love flea markets, and I love garage sales. While dining in Idaho Springs this past weekend I passed a sign that said "Thrift Shoppe". Thankfully I was able to convince my travel companion to give me "5 minutes" (really means 20 minutes) to run into this store while he warmed up the car for our trek back to Boulder. I entered the building and was immediately greeted by a shopping cart of free books. This I took as a great sign of what was to come. I followed the signage which directed me to the basement where the actual thrift store is held. I descended the stairs and was greeted by sporting goods and books. As I continued the store opened up to a large room with clothing, home goods, kitchenware, and various home accessories. With a daily special of "50% off" off I was sure to find a little something to go home with. As I was in a time crunch I quickly perused the kitchenware and noted various "sets" of good looking dishes and glassware, the outerwear was section was not as large as I'd expected but had coats and ski pants in good condition. I settled on a flapper inspired printed scarf and at just over $1 returned to the car happily with my find. I definitely plan to drop into the Thrift Shoppe the next time I am in Idaho Springs.

Given the very limited shopping options in Central City, this is an amazing little shop. Prices are extremely affordable for gifts or small household items. They had a full array of cat-centric tees (unfortunately not our size or we would have snatched up several). General clothing items were priced $2 (amazingly organized by size AND color) and in very good condition/quality. I saw an Express 100% silk collared shirt (alas not our size - sigh), what an amazing bargain at $2! If you are in the area and forgot to bring a piece of clothing come check this store out. The volunteers were extremely friendly and courteous, which is a hit or miss in this town from our experience. It seems like not all businesses are happy to see tourists, but this little shop is surely to leave you with a good impression and equally amazing finds!

I needed a new bed ASAP and went to Aley Bair on 10/9/2020. I picked out a $1,479.00 bed and a $1,719.00 mattress that was on sale for just under $800.00. I paid for delivery the next day. When I reviewed the receipt they had not given me the sale price, i.e. they over charged me by (my best recollection) about $ 900+. When I called they demurred and said that mattress was no longer available. I fell for it and spent even more-$2000.00- on a different mattress. Then when they got to within 500 feet of my house today, they stopped the truck and refused to deliver. They have a new white truck that the owner says is worth $90,000 and they can't get any scratches on it. My road is wide enough for UPS/Fed-X/Semi's/Moving Vans-but not Aley's new white trucks. So I offered to help carry it all in. They said no because their 2d delivery man was only 16 and they just couldn't stress him like that. Keep in mind I am a 62 year old woman--and I was fine with it. Then they offered to bring the bed frame in and sell me that but no mattress. Are you kidding? I thought this place was so expensive b/c they offered good service. I just lost 2 days over their shenanigans! And when I tried to speak to the owner, all she did was talk on top of me. She wouldn't listen to me at all, but her attitude helped me understand why the employees are so rude. I would NEVER go back and I wouldn't never send a friend.

Luckily we had one more full day before our elopement and Grand Mountain Trading was the first place I put on my list in hopes of finding shoes. I didn't have a lot of hope as my husband is a size 14 men's and I'm size 12 women's, and most places don't carry our sizes. And I figured there was no way a small mountain town store would have our sizes. I WAS WRONG. We found hiking shoes in both of our sizes. I even found mine on sale in the bargain room. My husband found these perfect black cowboy boots, and I ended up getting some super cute boots to wear on the big day, instead of settling for my oofo flip flops. Now let me talk about Libby. This employee is an angel! We told her our story and before even trying to sell their shoes, she was telling us about other places we could go. She was very nice and helpful. When checking out, I believe it was the owner, she knocked my shoes down from $99.99 to $49.99 and took $10 off each pair of boots as she also heard about our story. We also received tokens for $5 off every $30 spent. We went back the next day after our elopement and got some awesome RMNP shirts. They kinda open when the sign says, and they sometimes stay open until closing time. Or they may stay open way past closing time. . . . hope that explains mountain time. We arrived promptly when they opened but it was still completely dark inside (obv not open yet). So we waited a few minutes. About 10 minutes after their sign says they open a lady arrived and opened the front door. So I got out of my car and headed inside the store. As I walked in she vanished inside the store, so I said, "hello??" The lady rudely responded with, "We're not open yet." So I just said, "well what time do you open at? It's already 8:15." She has the typical antique stuff like glassware, dishes, jewelry, baby dolls, clothes, old appliances, books and records. Books and records were 20% off on the day we went. The records were mainly entertainers from the late '50s and '60s. We did find a book about National Parks that we purchased. They also had some old typewriters which would be a cool gift for an inspiring writer in your life. In the photos for this place it says they are closed on Wednesdays. But when we went yesterday, they were very much open.
