In our sessions, we talk through issues, look at tools I can use, and process negative events using EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing). Using EMDR has been a huge help. I start out feeling worried and hurt, and during the EMDR, those feelings decrease and go away. Positive, healthy feelings rise up to replace them, and I end up feeling relaxed and worthy. I believe…read morea significant factor in this success was the time Johnny took to properly educate and prepare me for this innovative and relatively new therapy. Part of the first appointment was spent defining the "rules" for both of us in terms of cancellations, insurance paperwork, etc. What I really appreciated about this was it set a level of respect that went both ways: what I needed to do as a client and what she needed to do as a therapist. The explanation of the EMDR therapy plus the time to get a solid foundation for the actual work was not at all rushed, which made the whole process that much more comfortable. For anyone not familiar with this particular therapy, it is intended to help victims of trauma. I was hesitant to enter this therapy because I would not have considered my problems to be trauma-based, but trauma is not necessarily a violent or accident/attack incident. If you find yourself "stuck" with the same recurring thought(s) about specific troubling incidents that you just can't seem to get beyond, you should consider trying this therapy. After some difficult but well-guided work, I feel like the weight of the world has been lifted off my shoulders. Having reprocessed some very negative thoughts in to something much more constructive through EMDR Therapy, I sleep better, have more patience and concentration, and simply feel better overall. Johnny's style and approach to therapy are professional yet easy going, and a comfortable client has a greater chance of success. My time with Johnny was well spent with a very successful outcome.

Truth be told, I am a bit of a female Woody Allen. I had three sessions with Carol. The first two were okay, but I found myself repeating details a lot -- people's names, etc. I figured I'd give it some time to see if she had a bad memory or if she'd catch on. But during the third session the building maintenance people were doing construction in the office next door to Carol's. And it was loud, really loud. During the session, she turns to me and says, "This is going to last for about an hour." Um, um, um. "Do you think that perhaps you could have called me in advance to cancel the session given that neither one of us can hear a word the other saying?" Clearly she knew about the noise in advance. IMO, a professional therapist would have ended the session there or called the client to cancel. Nope, not Carol. In fact, during the session she was completely distracted and had her body partially turned to the back wall where the noise was coming from. Yet when I complained to her about how unproductive this session was afterward, she completely denied that there was a problem.... Of course she wanted me to come in to pay for another session to talk about MY reaction to the noise. I decided to give it one more shot and was going through a difficult time. Carol just couldn't get it together to reply to my email requests for an appointment in a timely way. When she finally did reply she said something like "I'd love to talk with you." Okay, great. Good to know after nearly 2 weeks of trying to get in touch. However, she failed to provide a day and time for when that might happen. What therapist agrees to an appointment, then doesn't know to provide a day and time for the appointment? Feeling really annoyed, I sent several emails sequentially just to annoy Carol. Not my finest moment, I admit. That's when Carol told me (via email mind you) that I need to work on my interpersonal skills. No sh-t. Why does she think I'm going to a therapist to begin with? At that point she still expected us to talk a few days later. Um, no. Healer: heal thyself. I told Carol that my lack interpersonal skills still don't change the fact that she was completely unprofessional in her handling of the situation, and that it was really bad form for her to attack me especially via email. Carol never apologized or acknowledged the problems on her end. Done. Good-bye, lady. I guess now I can only aspire to Carol's finely-honed interpersonal skills which seem to include license to criticize a client via email. I've often thought psychotherapists go into practice to try to fix themselves. Here is a clear case of that. (By way of background, I came to Carol through the work she and several colleagues do on weekends involving family constellations (Bert Hellinger). I've done tons of this work with a very gifted facilitator. Carol's colleagues succeed only in spite of themselves. Hellinger's model is that powerful. But their facilitation really kinda sucks. One of her colleagues, Betsy, is perpetually about to end a constellation because she doesn't know where to go with it. The other, Mary, is just grouchy and completely misses key components of how constellations are supposed to be set up.

Before seeing Carol, I had been going to a different therapist for a few years who I now believe was not helpful to me. When I expressed my frustration with my lack of progress, he eventually started to attribute this to me as "not doing the work". I met Carol as a co-therapist in a group he was doing and she heard his harsh and painful comments. I eventually switched to her and she really helped me to gain perspective on the previous therapist and my life. In addition I referred her to at least 2 friends who she was able to help over difficult periods in their lives. When/if I do need therapy again, I take reassurance knowing Carol is still in practice.

I decided to get a therapist for my daughter who has been dealing with a lot. Ms. Duffy was…read morerecommended, and I liked what I read when I researched her, so I reached out to schedule an appointment. In the beginning, we were going every week, but my daughter was not engaging, so Ms. Duffy recommended to change it to once a month so my daughter would not hate therapy when she got older. It made sense because therapy doesn't work unless the person seeking therapy is open and willing to accept the help. We went once a month until Ms. Duffy said every two months. I thought that was a gap but agreed. In March, Ms. Duffy emails me to ask what time we had decided to meet. I am someone who lives by my calendar. I gave her the time that she had told us, and she responded thanks. A lot has been going on, so I was happy that my daughter was going to her therapy session. A couple of weeks prior, I had sent Ms. Duffy an email with updates and some recommendations. She did respond, and not once mentioned anything wrong with the upcoming therapy session. The day comes, and I found it weird how many people were in the waiting room. Well, seems Ms. Duffy had double booked us. On top of that, she nonchalantly (this is a nice way of saying that she had this "I don't give a damn" attitude) says that I canceled the appointment. I said that never occurred. She responds, "Well I don't have you all down anymore." Everywhere I have called has a 3-6 month waiting list, so this was something that was really needed. My daughter was disappointed, and I was trying to keep my calm. A therapist behaving this way. I wrote her this email, and I hope that she never does this to anyone again: It seems you took it upon yourself to cancel the appointment or you made a mistake with scheduling. You emailed me in March to ask what date and time we were meeting, and I responded. What is frustrating is the nonchalant attitude you had about the mishap. You have a more important job than I do being that you are dealing with human lives. I deal with computers that are not as important and if I would have done what you did with a client, I would have been fired. More and more I am losing faith in therapists, and you just added to that. I really hope that next time, when you make a scheduling mistake, you do not assume, and make sure to follow up instead of just deciding upon yourself to cancel a therapy appointment that is needed We really were looking forward to the session.
