Growing into adulthood is a struggle for anyone, and I was having a rough time. You meet people that care, and then you meet people that both care and can engage you. The latter is Joan Normandy-Dohlberg. Not only did Joan make me feel comfortable & safe to express my feelings (& share my deepest darkest,) but she engaged me in a way I knew I was heard & felt I could accomplish more & do better for myself- no judgment, no falsity. She is very knowledgeable and uses different methods to help you cope and understand your feelings and so you can process a painful past and not let it impinge on the rest of your life. She is a great listener but unlike another therapist I had in the past, she doesn't just listen and tell you its "normal", she actually discusses how it's affecting you and ways to lessen it's impact on your mental health. She uses EMDR, a therapy that helped me SO much by lessening the pain of past trauma and now the remembrances of these events is much more infrequent and does not cause high levels of anxiety. This review is based on my own communications with the practice. On Jan. 12, 2026, I told the therapist that I had contacted the office for scheduling information and was told I was not listed as someone who could receive it. I asked what was needed to be included and stated that the court order authorized my access. On Jan. 29, 2026, I specifically asked what Renewal needed from me to add me to the system/portal for notifications, including forms, ID verification, or a copy of the order. Instead of asking me directly at that time for ID or court documentation, the response I received was that the other parent had been sent a document she needed to complete so I could receive notifications, and that she also needed to sign the treatment plan. On Feb. 4, 2026, the therapist again wrote that Renewal was still waiting on the other parent to sign off on the treatment plan and fill out the contact form with my information so I could be added. On Mar. 6, 2026, I again clarified that I shared legal custody and equal parental rights and offered to resend the court order if needed. From my perspective, the issue was not clinical confidentiality or therapy notes. I was seeking basic administrative access: appointment notices, scheduling information, attendance confirmation, billing/records information, and a clear process for parent access. That process was confusing and delayed for months. Later, the practice characterized the issue as verification and portal limitations, but the earlier emails show my access was being held up by the other parent's paperwork/signature rather than by a direct request to me for verification. I respect the need to protect minor-client privacy, but a therapy practice should have a clear, timely, and neutral process for verifying and communicating with both legal parents about administrative records. In my experience, Renewal's process was not clear or timely.
