Sylvia's Boutique - Wedding qipao I got from Sylvia's boutique

Many qipao stores have closed since the pandemic, thank goodness Sylvia's is still around. I came…read moreup from DC to find a wedding qipao after a frustrating day of not being allowed to try on garments in Manhattan Chinatown. Despite only making an appointment 2 hours prior, Sylvia allowed me to try on as many as I wanted and was super helpful in helping me decide among options. I found brocade styles that I've never seen at other stores or online. I came back several months later (timed with a work trip) to try on what I had ordered -- it had to be shipped from China. I thought I would have to return for a third trip to pick up my tailoring but no, Sylvia made adjustments while I got lunch in Flushing and I took it home that afternoon! I could not recommend making the trek out here more.

I absolutely love this place. I needed a dress for my tea ceremony within three months and she…read moredelivered!! My dress was around $700 due my personalization and fabric choices. All in all, she is now my go-to tailor and my first pick for these dress. Definitely recommend!

Now, let's talk about the goods - they've got an ocean of $1.99 earrings that are fun to sift through if you enjoy a little treasure hunt. Just don't expect them to last longer than the trend itself, because, let's be real, these pieces are more "fashion" than function. But hey, for under two bucks, why not? They've also got some pricier items if you're feeling fancy, and the store is a paradise for Korean fashion lovers. You'll find everything from trendy clothes and accessories to socks, wallets, and jewelry - basically all the stuff that makes you feel like you walked out of a K-drama (or at least tried). I'm honestly baffled by the negative rating because it's really not thattttt bad. The place is fun, affordable, and they even wrap your purchases like a gift, which is always a nice touch. If you're looking for quality that will last a lifetime, maybe this isn't your stop, but if you want to feel cute for a season, it's a solid place to pop by. 4 stars out of 5.

I've also gotten some cute hair accessories, but there are pricey compared to the clothes they sell. You definitely need to go through and have time to browse.

I stopped by to check out the Love & Deepspace merch that they had as they often post the new merch that they receive on IG. I think they might be one of the only places in NYC that import the. The small items were reasonably priced while the larger ones like plushies were $30 and up. There were also merch from a few other Chinese donghua and games like HonKai Star Rail. Down a few steps there was another section with a bunch of lotteries that you can buy tickets for from $15-18/ticket with discounts if you purchased a bundle of them. Upstairs was where all the regular sized display figures were. 5% off if you pay with cash.

Location wise is on Roosevelt Ave inside the DongDaeMun Shopping Mall Inc which is on the same street as the 7 train. The anime store has three floors (upper floor, main level and basement). Overall, the space is clean and has narrow aisles. Fast service from friendly staff. Cash and/or credit/debit cards are accepted payment. The main floor has a variety of blind boxes, Labubu figures, flash cards, plushies, car models, posters, stationary, figurines especially merch of anime and manga characters....many which I've not heard of before. My favorites are the classic Sanrio and Cardcaptor Sakura. Hugely decent selection of Miku (girl with teal-colored hair) merchandise towards the back of the store. Basement has different kinds of figurines that I've no idea about. My friend knows most of these characters by heart because it seems to be one of her favorite stores whenever coming to the Flushing neighborhood. Flash cards have good deals but the blind boxes are more on the pricier side imo, like $3-4 more compared to other places. Next time if you're wondering what to gift your friends, you can choose to stop by here. I think there has to be something for everyone whether you're into anime or not.

I was honestly scared to touch anything because every aisle I walked to, an employee quickly followed me there and stood approximately a few feet away just staring. But what made me say you basically got me messed up was when the girl who worked there didn't offer any assistance (Because there was no prices on many of the items) Decided to hover instead like we were there to steal. Hell would have to have frozen over twice if I were to buy anything from this place after experiencing such disrespect. Get CCTVs if you are so paranoid. Maybe it's the New Yorker in me but nope there are other places in Flushing to get plushies. And based off these reviews this place not only lack customer service they are overpriced. So I think we dodged a bullet.

When I tried to express my concerns to the manager about the way one of her employees had spoken to me, she barely made eye contact and brushed me off with a muttered "okay" before continuing about her business... no apology, no interest, no accountability. Nothing. As I turned to leave, I overheard her tell the cashier that it's okay to speak to customers like that. So I returned to the register, handed back my items, and said I wouldn't be shopping at a place that treats people this way. Instead of apologizing or acknowledging the issue, the cashier chimed in, and stated "I don't like your attitude". Then the manager finally lifted her head to say something to me stating that I was the one who was being rude. While doing the return the cashier was the one being rude to me and she visibly frustrated when she was asking me for my email, name, and last name for the return. It felt like the entire team tried to gang up against me. I had been nothing but polite from the moment I walked in, asking for help respectfully, thanking staff, and even apologizing if I was in anyone's way. The real issue started at the fitting room, where the employee got visibly irritated and snapped at me and the person I was with for standing in the "wrong" spot and stating we were in her way. She was the one who told the person I was with to sit where she was sitting! I was simply trying on clothes and showing it to her. I also witnessed the employee speaking to another customer with the same rude tone, which is why I initially tried to bring it to the manager's attention. I also told the manager that I understand things may get busy but there's a way to convey your message to customers. This store clearly doesn't take customer feedback seriously and has no respect for shoppers. I hate to bring race into this, but we were the only other Asian customers in the store at the time... and given how differently we were treated, it's hard not to feel that this played a role in how we were spoken to and dismissed. Disappointed and disgusted. Do better.
