My boyfriend and I stumbled into Chanchai after visiting his bow maker in Sherbrooke, Quebec. What a lovely surprise - we were delighted by everything we ordered. The restaurant is clean, service is prompt and attentive, and the food is solid. We came during lunch, and the restaurant definitely started to get busier at around 12:30.
For starters, we both shared a Tom Yum soup. While the soup was more sour / lemon-y than I would have liked and the noodles were a little too al dente, I was happy with the amount of veggies in the soup. Also, it was a perfect way to fill our bellies with warm broth after walking in the freezing cold for 30 minutes! For entrees, I ordered the stir-fried beef with basil, and he ordered the Pad Thai with chicken. I think the star of the whole meal was the Pad Thai. While it wasn't super authentic, the flavor was incredible!! While I find that Pad Thai can be a very dry dish sometimes, Chanchai's Pad Thai was very sauce-y and savory. Each bite left me craving more! The chicken was well-seasoned, as were the rest of the vegetables. The peanut flavor was a little muted, which is fine because I'm not the biggest fan of peanuts anyways. My stir-fried beef with basil was a little less flavorful, but still a solid dish. The beef was very tender, and I appreciated the veggies piled on top - it certainly made me feel less guilty about indulging in Thai food! I wish the dish came with a little more spice. In addition, the rice that accompanies the dish is a pretty tiny mound - it wouldn't hurt to add a little more rice!
Overall, we were extremely satisfied with our meal, and absolutely would come again if we ever return to Sherbrooke! read more
