Dr, Chan is amazing! We were referred to his office by my partners ophthalmologist. We have been there for 3 appointments and feel very well taken care of. His knowledge and his care are 110%! Yes, it can be a very long wait, but they tell you that in the beginning, so I don't know why everyone complains. There is a notice on the wall that states this too. My father has seen Dr. Chan and his lovely staff for years. He is a one-of-a-kind doctor and WE are LUCKY have such a knowledgeable doctor in this desert. TO ALL THE PEOPLE WHO COMPLAIN ABOUT THE LONG WAIT: I would NEVER change it for the world! This means that wonderful Dr. Chan CARES about his patients and wants to be thorough with them. extremely rude and curt staff. I waited 5 hours to see doctor. the exam room filthy from previous patient with dirty syringes and bloody pillow in sink. Dr Chan didn't apologize for the long wait and when I asked questions he was very unprofessional and told me not to interrupt and wait until he was done. even when I was allowed to ask a question he was very condescending. I've seen Dr. Chan since May 2023 at Palm Desert office and today at Palm Springs office. Staff always polite and efficient. Dr. Chan does a thorough exam, is a good listener, answers questions and gives good advice. Recent appt. I arrived 10 min. early and appt. was completed in 1 hr. 15 min. which included his staff calling a glaucoma specialist and setting an appt. for me within 3 business days. I went to Dr. Chan's Palm Desert office when I was told that I had a hole in my macular wall after an annual exam at Milauskas Institute. The staff was friendly and professional. The Palm Desert office was immaculate and very nice. There were 3 patients ahead of me but I was taken to several different rooms for various tests so the time went by rather quickly. Dr. Chan was nice, showed me photos of my eyes and explained that there was no hole and just a cyst. He told me to return in 3 months and see if there were any changes. OK, it is true that you have to wait a long time when you go in to see Dr. Chan. Plan ahead as there may be someone with an emergency in front of you. But, he is a fantastic eye doctor and has seen me through 2 retinal detachments and several retinal tears. He came in on a Sat. night to do surgery for me without complaint. He's good, but the incredibly LONG waits and constant rescheduling tells me only one thing - this Opthalmologist has ZERO respect for any of his patient's time. I'm sure that Dr Chan is a very efficient professional. I'll never know. His Office Manager, Tina, made sure of that. When you're clearly covered by your insurance, she makes sure you're not included in that coverage. I have no other choice but to move on. I had an unfortunate experience at Retina Consultants. On the first visit I had to wait four hours before they completed the exam. I think they just overbook with no regard for the patients. Dr. Chan said he wanted me to come back so he could take a picture of the back of my Retina. I asked if I would have to wait four hours again. He said no, it would only be an hour. I came back on the day of my appointment. They dilated my eye and after a few minutes a nurse asked me to join her in a private room. She said she was sorry, but the photographer did not come in, so we had to reschedule. I asked how they failed to notify me? Even worse they dilated my eye so my wife had to return to drive me home. My appointment was in the afternoon. That left plenty of time to notify me I did should not waste my time. She said she was sorry and that was it. The photographer was in for the next appointment, but the doctor was not. They said they would call me with the results. That was two weeks ago. No call yet. Sloppy, sloppy, sloppy. What a way to run an office. read more

My first and last visit to Dr. Chan's office was the worst. The preliminaries of completing questionaires and initial eye tests, to include dialation, and of course a $65 co-payment, took about 20-30 minutes. Following, I was placed in a waiting area for my exam, along with some 6-8 other folks. Besides a 5 minute retinal photo, nothing moved forward and only one patient was called in a 2 hour span. I went to the front desk to re-schedule for a first thing a.m. appointment to avoid the excessive delay. I was advised that even a first a.m. appointment would take some 3 + hours. I've had these routine exams for more than 10 years, so I know they only take an hour max. The front desk bimbo and an interjecting nurse, who knew nothing about me, advised there was only one patient ahead of me, so I gave it a second chance. However, the wait time continued for another 25 minutes, during which time I observed a patient or patient friend exiting an exam room who I know had been in there for an hour and heard another waiting patient exclaim it may take 4 hours or more. On that note, I opted to forgo the exam and leave, in spite of the $65 co-pay and $15 Uber ride. Dr. Chan may be the best by his noted credentials, but he has obviously set up a money-making train by overbooking patients to enable increased billing to insurance carriers and Medicare, and has done so at the patient's burden and expense. This is a scam I will not subscribe to, regardless of his medical credetials. Any doctor following this practice cannot possibly put the paitient's interest first over their interest in making money. He should be investigated by the authorities. If the good doctor wishes to debate this, I'll be happy to take him on face-to-face. read more

A true hidden treasure in the desert! I had a fantastic retina specialist in Los Angeles. Unfortunately I can't keep driving to L.A. for doctor appointments. My GP recommended Dr. Chan. When I called to make an appointment they let me know to allow 3 hours. Dr Chan was thorough. He asked me questions no other doc asked. When he was finished asking he explained what my answers pointed to and what they eliminated. After thoroughly looking at my eyes and images he pulled out a picture of the eye. He pointed out the different parts of the eye and how each part functions. He used the example of a kodak camera. He pointed out where my issues were on the photo in great detail. He told me the chances of vision loss each year. He was honest yet compassionate when telling me I have a progressive disease and all I can do is diet and lifestyle in order to slow the progression. When he was done he asked me if I had any questions. I left there knowing exactly what to expect going forward and knew I was getting the best care possible. read more

I lost half my vision due to his surgery. He failed to check my eye pressure before surgery even though I told his staff my eye pressure was high due to cataract surgery. During the surgery he permanently damaged my retina in 4 areas and I also now have glaucoma due to his negligence to check my eye pressure. Desert Oasis dropped him as a doctor used in their network. His average wait time was 3-1/2 hours sometimes longer. In my opinion this is the worst doctor I have ever seen. read more

Dr. Chan performed a very serious surgery on my husband 7/2019. His staff has been rude from the FIRST DAY. Their phone system is the worst!!! After his surgery we needed to contact the Dr. on the weekend, per their instructions. The nurse was emphatic if a problem presented itself, "DO NOT GO TO ER, BUT CONTACT THE DR. CHAN" We called for 2 days and could not reach anyone. NO answer!!! We were told someone forgot to transfer the phone to the answering service. Then AGAIN,,,we called because we needed a prescription refilled for drops. NO ANSWER,,When I did reach them, the receptionist agreed with me that "yes they do have phone problems". When I finally spoke to a nurse for a refill, she was EXTREMELY rude. My husband stood at desk to check in & recept. was on cell phone & ignored him. Staff needs SO much help. I am totally believe in Dr Chan and his most efficient and helpful staff. I cannot believe the valley has a specialist of his caliber in the valley. We are so LUCKY. His staff is very friendly and efficient. If running late due to things out of his control they will tell the visiting room. Ken the photo technician is always cheerful as well as the whole staff. I love it there. Dr Chan, in my opinion has literally saved my eyesight. I am diabetic and have macular degeneration. His skillful hands improved my vision immensely and reduced my eye problems in the process. All the negative reviews seem accurate with my experience. Wait time generally is 3-1/2 hours but I've waited up to 5 hours. Did surgery and now I've lost half my vision due to his failure to check my eye pressure before or after surgery. His failure also resulted in optic nerve damage and glaucoma which were not a problem before the surgery. He unnecessarily damaged my retina in four areas during surgery. I have four big black areas in my vision now. All of these problems he created are irreversible. DO NOT GO TO THIS DOCTOR. read more

I was referred to Dr. Chan and made an appointment with his office at 36949 Cook St., Suite 101, Palm Desert which is located in a newer office park and it was a bit of a challenge to find the office. The staff was efficient and friendly. There are three doctors practicing here at Southern California Desert Retina and the waiting room was packed with at least 20 people. After waiting for over 30 mins. past my appointment time, I asked the front desk, how much longer I would have to wait. I was told that I should allow THREE HOURS. I was dumbfounded. It was explained to me that because Dr. Chan works on medical studies and research that he takes time after each patient to dictate all of his notes. Being a cancer survivor, and a participant in a national study, I appreciate the importance of medical studies but was never punished with long waiting times for an appointment. I find this practice of overbooking totally disrespectful to the patients. I was told that patients don't have to wait as long for one of the two other doctors; however, the next appointment available for one of the other doctors was over one month away. Fortunately, I was not in pain or suffering vision problems. I cancelled my appointment and left. I will find another retina specialist. I will not return to Southern California Desert Retina. read more

I had same experience as Kay H, but in the Palm Springs office -- which is rather shabby and run down. I think what they do is unethical and takes advantage of the fact that the majority of their patients are older, Medicare enrollees who seem to be willing to put up with an incredible lack of respect to get the care they need. The staff was nice enough, but somehow insisted that Dr. Chan did NOT overbook even though they told me that I should expect to wait at least 3 hours regardless of when an appointment was scheduled. read more

I waited in the office for NINE HOURS until I was seen. I got to the office at 5:00 with a detached retina and finally saw the Dr. At midnight. He did my surgery at 1:00 and I got home at 2:45 am. There were many elderly patients crying or asleep in the waiting room. I felt trapped because I needed the surgery immediately and couldn't leave. They brought in snacks and drinks because so many of the patients were upset or asleep. It was clearly crazy over booking and I told the staff so. Horrible experience. Dr. Chan forgot to check my eye pressure before surgery and after surgery for awhile. My eye pressure was high because of cataract surgery a month before Told his office I was concerned. I was told Dr. Chan would check my pressure before surgery. He never did. And he did not check it for awhile after surgery. Because of this high pressure I have optic nerve damage and glaucoma. Each appt with Dr. Chan was about 3-1/2 hours. I gave him one star but that is far too much. This doctor has NO RESPECT for his patients. While I trust and respect doctors, this one is truly an exception. He has no clue what TIME MANAGEMENT is and has no respect for his patients time. I was referred to Dr. Chan as my doctor was on vacation. I tried getting in twice. The first time was June 11th at 7:00pm - when I called to reconfirm my appointment he was running 2 hours behind. Yes 2 hours that would have meant I would see him at 9pm. I rescheduled for June 13th at 12:15pm - when I called at 12:00 I was advised to call again at 1:00 - I then called and was told that he was caught up come in at 1:45pm. In which I did. I waited until 2:pm to be called. The attendant went and put drops in my eyes and then asked me to go back and wait in the waiting room that there were no rooms available. From a room a patient spoke out and said she'd been there over an hour waiting. he was advised that it would be another half hour. So I asked, and the receptionist Erika (should not be in this business) told me well you are going to have to wait, really? PLEASE DO NOT GIVE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY TO SUPPORT SOMEONE LIKE THIS.
