The gift shop was happy to see us and sad to see us leave!

We opted for the cellar with the beautiful tower. 12 Euros per person gets you a Wonderful, informative tour of the Champagne cave (cellar) plus a view of mini museum dedicated to history of their champagne AND a tasting at the end of the tour. The tour lasted 50 minutes. Our guide showed us the vats where 100,000 L of champagne were stored, how they turn the bottles to remove the sediment and treasures of champagne bottles that were centuries old. Someone in the group asked as we walked by crates of champagne what year and type of champagne the bottles were. She replied that champagne bottles are marked by a special system that only the specialists knew. I love learning about champagne! And the tasting at the end of tour was wonderful! They gave us a sample of the Champagne de Castellane Brut. Amazing! Fresh, bubbly, flavorful. This was much better than the Moet et Chandon we were drinking in NY. I wish we ordered a couple of bottles to ship home.

I do know that the majority of the time up until recently I've been drinking shitty stuff. There are a couple of true revelatory experiences and a handful of very goods. Pol Roger was brought to my attention literally a few days ago and I've learned it is a favorite of the British Royal Family and the passed Sir Winston Churcill which they have a line specifically for. I guess they might be half decent :) What's really surprising is that they might be one of the better price performance values ever. The good stuff is usually very expensive and everything else that is cheap is usually priced accordingly. For about $40 US, the non vintage Brut Reserve is quite good. You learn something new every day and it's great to discover a new value.

Our tasting host was so friendly and knowledgeable which elevated the experience. The variety of champagnes were delicious and it was so fun with the addition of the "sensory" aspect of the tasting to try to identify and pair the subtle aromas in each. I only wish it was a little longer, being only one hour and totally private it felt a little rushed at the end so they can bring in the next tasting appointment. But we did take a bottle of our favorite champagne home after stopping by their shop!

I have been on "English" wine tasting tours where I only understood about half of what the tour guide was saying, which defies the whole purpose of hiring an English-speaking guide. I don't mind listening to timed audio recordings where the English has actually been vetted. The champagne tasting at the end is nice too, as the staff does not rush you to finish. Mercier brands itself as an affordable champagne, so the tour experience is what you would expect from the no-frills brand as well.

Writing a review now though I've visited the house in June of last year. The house runs tours once or twice a day for a small group of people with a tasting of 5 or 6 of their champagnes from the most basic Extra Brut to the most exclusive Nicolas Francois Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon. The house grounds are kept in pristine condition and have some the best plots on which the grapes are grown right next to the founder's house. The house from what we were told is still occupied, which is wonderful to see that the owners are still involved in some little way with their ancestor's creation. The cellars are amazing and are a must to visit. And champagne!!... Oh the champagne....
