I recently stopped at the Chamberlain rest stop off I-90, and it's honestly one of the nicest rest areas I've been to. The view overlooking the Missouri River is beautiful--definitely worth taking a few extra minutes to stretch your legs and take it in. There's a big statue called Dignity of Earth and Sky that's pretty impressive, and it makes the stop feel more like a quick sightseeing break than just a bathroom stop. The facilities themselves are clean and well-kept, which is always a plus when you're on a long drive. There are plenty of picnic tables, some shaded areas, and space to walk around if you've been sitting in the car for hours. It's also a good spot to refuel mentally--quiet, safe, and family-friendly. Overall, this is one of those rest areas that actually sticks with you. The view is stunning as well. If you're passing through South Dakota, I'd definitely recommend pulling over here instead of just any random stop along the highway. read more

This was an amazing rest stop. Yes, rest stops are usually welcome stops when traveling, as they have bathrooms, water refill stations, and sometimes picnic areas and vending machines. THIS rest stop, however, had so much more and, in fact, could be a destination unto itself! Inside, there was the two-story Lewis and Clark Interpretative Center, an interactive museum depicting the travelers journey through South Dakota in 1803-1806, complete with a built-in 2-story keel boat, and a balcony with views of the Missouri River, "the mighty Mo". Then there was the tourism center with helpful personnel and brochures for South Dakota attractions across the state. Outside, we enjoyed a shaded picnic table with a view of one of the famous "Whitwam's Wigwams". These are nine concrete sculptures resembling tipis found at rest stops along two South Dakota interstates, designed by architect Walt Whitwam. Finally, we marveled at the statue of "Dignity of Earth and Sky" sculpture, a 50' depiction of a Native American woman holding a quilt with panel sections that flutter in the wind. In the evening, the panels of the quilt are illuminated with LED lights and resemble diamonds. Kudos to South Dakota for bringing culturally, artistic, and historically important content to the people -- as they stop to rest and recharge during their long journeys along the interstate! The Chamberlain Rest Stop is located across the Missouri River on a bluff that overlooks the Lewis and Clark Memorial Bridge off I-90. It is also famous as the home of the Dignity of Earth and Sky monument, which should be reviewed separately in https://www.yelp.com/biz/dignity-of-earth-and-sky-chamberlain. As rest areas go, it is a superior one. It is located on the west side of the highway with an underpass and loop so that traffic headed west on I-90 can access it. There is a large modern building with restrooms and a map. Water fountain, picnic tables and picnic shelters, space for walking dogs. Do be careful and aware if you decide to walk to the overlook. We had been traveling west on the 90 when we decided to stop. The exit ramp seemed to take forever but we squirted out into a parking lot that was huge and traffic was being directed by local law enforcement. We found a parking spot and pulled out our picnic basket and found a nice little shelter to have lunch. After lunch, we walked around and found the beautiful monument and the sight over looking the Missouri river was incredible. I've stopped at quite a few rest areas in my travels but nothing compares to this stop. Well done South Dakota! read more

The Chamberlain Rest Stop is a beautiful and clean. It oversees the river and the Lewis and Clark Memorial Bridge off I-90. The bathrooms were very clean and there are ample places to sit at a picnic table to enjoy the scenery and eat a packed meal. There are pathways to take a walk and stretch your legs. read more

Really wish they had a street address and more signage on the highway for Dignity. The statue is beautiful. I also wish children and some adults would realize that standing on the feet of the statue is extraordinarily rude and disrespectful. Yes your children are cute, but this is a work of art! The Louis and Clark information and boat display inside were done very nicely. And since this is a rest stop, the restrooms were also clean and well cared for. read more
