In 1951 Joe and Mary Lang opened Lang Sun Country Groves, a retail shop and shipping company that drew in many tourists who were on a Central Florida vacation. After 53 years the business expanded to include Taste of Florida Café showcasing fresh fruit and vegetables and Mary Lang's recipes, including her award winning Grapefruit Pie featured on the Food Network show, Epicurious. Since 2021, the restaurant has been owned by Joseph and Kristi Merritt. I stopped in to Taste of Florida Cafe while attending the 39 Mile Scenic Highway Yard Sale along the Ridge Scenic Highway Corridor. As soon as I walked in I was completely charmed by this adorable cafe and gift shop decked out in vintage decor. They have plenty of seating inside and on a covered patio. You order at the counter and they bring your food out to you when it is ready. The young ladies working the cafe were sweet and welcoming. By the time I landed here I was starving from shopping sales all day. I decided on the hearty Roast Beef Classic topped with fresh tomato, lettuce, bacon, and Swiss cheese. Sometimes the simplest sandwiches are the best. It was served with a bag of chips and watermelon. I also had the most delicious tropical Hawaiian smoothie with orange and pineapple. It tasted like sunshine in a cup. I was too full dessert but I took a couple home with me including the grapefruit pie which lived up to the hype and the orange dream cake. In addition to running the cafe they also offer catering. I couldn't leave without browsing the gift shop which featured fresh produce, local honey, jams, jellies, sauces, Florida Tropical Wines, local honey, cards, candles, shirts, bags, candy and many other unique Florida centric items. In addition to their grapefruit pie other Lang's signature items are their fresh squeezed orange juice and soft serve orange ice cream made with their fresh juice.
