Need a family place to relax?! Look no further! Our first time was last year and we only did the day pass. We enjoyed the place so much that decided to rent a cabin this year. Place is private for which there is a fee for day pass or cabin rental fee/ person. Please do and ask all questions about your cabin as they are all different. Some were more updated than others .most did not include stove or full size Fridge. Cabins are not kept up pretty well and are pretty small. Mattress feels a bit like cardboard and has no support. We had a mini fridge and were not able to keep items cold. Top loft is pretty small for which even kids hit their head. The experience overall is very relaxing. Recommend bringing outdoor/Christmas lights for better lighting. Our cabin had a pretty spacious cover patio that looked to the river. Each area comes with their own grill. Service was always great. Store items are as expected higher price than normal. But it does save you a 30 min drive to town. They do have a cute petting zoo area. And other minor activities to stay busy. River was low one day and high the next, swim at your own risk. Water was pretty cold to keep you refreshed and relaxed. Over all great place but will definitely do more research on which cabin I will be getting next time. read more

The river part was ok but damn put toilet seats on the toilets and maybe a light bulb so I don't piss on my leg trying to Hover above the toilet. Never again. This was a great first camping experience! I went with a group of friends last month and I loved that we had an energy block at every campsite so you could actually plug-in stoves or lights things like that. since I am a beginner I wasn't ready to fully unplug for a camping trip. The resort is right next to a river that is just so beautiful and clear, though a little mossy on the bottom. But you can fish, tube or canoe. And the best part is the river is warm. We went during one of the coldest weekends and the water was warmer than the air. There is also an office where you check in. And they sell logs and things like that in the shop. So if you ever do need something you don't have to run to a Walmart or whatever. I did have service out here for my phone so that was another plus for me as well. Since it was my first time I was a little nervous the first night and knowing that you can reach emergency services if you need to is good. The only thing I wish is that we could hike the mountain right next-door to the campsite on the other side of the river. read more

I read other reviews and agree with most. The name of resort may be a little far fetched. When driving in I was a little spooked. I can see where RV campers may enjoy but the cabins didn't look appealing. This a big and great property but it has been incredibly neglected, unfortunately. This could be absolutely gorgeous with a lot of TLC! But don't let that stop you! Once you get to the river.....aaaaaaaaaaahhh! The view of this bluff is incredible. The road to the river is all rocks and the floor of the river is too. It's sooo pretty and the water is beautiful and CLEAR. My pics are from 7/3 at 630pm so many had already left. We were there on the 4th too and it was PACKED. Literally tent after tent in the river. My next visit will be during a weekday. I don't like being too close to other parties only because I can't hear our music, there's like 5 different genre's going, i knew everyone's name around us, I couldn't really take a nap which i look forward to when by the water chilling. It was just my honey and I and we like to just sit, listen to our music, drink and take a snooze. Of course we like going with friends too but this was just OUR time. Nevertheless it was a first great experience on the river. Also, there is a $20 a person, not carload, for a day pass. We didn't mind knowing the area was clean by the river and there was no grass, algae, tree limbs or brush to deal with. So go check it out! read more

The river is always nice and there's always space to set up. They have some trees for shade, but I would suggest you take a canopy. The water is clear. The river has some shallow and some deep areas. I've never really seen too much trash lying around. The rooms: this time we stayed in a loft ($169 per night) with three beds and a small kitchen. You do have to bring all your supplies like toilet paper, toiletries, towels, cleaning supplies, etc. The beds were super squeaky. Any kind of movement and everyone in the loft would know. The kitchen has a small dorm fridge, microwave, coffee maker and a hot plate. The two days we stayed, the water kept going in and out. We all had to take quick showers in case the water stopped working. The window AC unit worked well. It did take time to cool the bedroom part of the loft. They do have bbq pits in front of each cabin. Bring your own bbq supplies. 11pm is quiet time, but good luck with that. Our neighbors were up and loud till 2am. I can't say I wouldn't return. The benefits do outweigh any cons. read more

We planned this trip for 2months , it's rare we get together and what better than a bit of cooking off ..... WELL roads coming in you better have a 4x4 cause those roads are ridiculous!! Cabins were "ok" but we had to spray a bunch of Lysol and wipe everything down , was by a family where their adult kids were outside smoking weed when my young children/grand baby were outside ( never had anyone pass to check the grounds ) ... AND this "day-pass" thing is a bit ridiculous , at least have a set amount of people to come in , I sat at my cabin and watched coming since 8 in the morning AND then when it was our time to go it was so super packed !!! The Nueces River is beautiful, clear and cool on this August day. Easy to park and pop up your canopy on the River front. Wear water sandals, not water socks. The rocks are big. We placed our chairs in the water for hours and really enjoyed our time. Kids loved the rope swing into the water. Downside: the restrooms are gross. Dark, dingy, smelly. Not maintained well at all need to be completely refurbished. The rest of the property looks old as well. read more

We had an AMAZING day trip! We only came for the animal encounter and to swim. Both were exceptional. My 3 kids absolutely fell in love with every minute of the animal encounter, especially the monkeys. Our guide was so helpful, kind, and knowledgeable, she really made the experience memorable. This is an all female run operation, I think they are all pretty bad ass. We will definitely do this again, especially when the sloth habitat opens! read more

Well I loved it best part no one was there lol Driving 1 hour 20 min so worth getting out of the city for the day. Had a great picnic out there the water was super cold lol but very nice. Petted some of the animals that was fun felt like a kid going from one animal to another great place to just get away. I will be taking my grandbabies out there I am sure they will love seeing the petting animals not only reading about them in books. They are only 2 and 5 years old if I enjoyed it I am sure they will think it the best. It was clean you get a bag for trash they have clean restrooms and showers. They have where you can rent to stay a few days or just a day pass like what we had but will be going back with the girls. The scene is beautiful I forgot what going to the river was and it was fun. The name should be Chalk Bluff River Dump... the property it's dirty and very run down. Trash everywhere. We were there for 4 days and never saw anyone taking care of the maintenance around. No one clean the cabins before we arrived. We rented 3 cabins and they were very DIRTY. They charged $100 a person for you to clean before and after. There's a list of things you must do before you leave, like sweeping and moping the floors.... SERIOUSLY. What are the $100 per person for, if we had to clean before and after; was it a charge to get in the river? also the cabin's bathroom doors don't have locks, just a string to hook to a nail.... NEVER AGAIN. I wish a can give them no stars whatsoever.... read more

Cabins are VERY dated, needs major improvement work. Communication is the worst I've ever experienced. They don't answer phone calls. Leave a message and they'll call you can a day or so later. I experienced 3-days later during one encounter. You can send a message via their website and they'll return it, with the same time-frame as a phone message. River got very crowded with day-trippers, which they don't cap-off. It's all about the $$, which they clearly don't use for maintenance/renovation. WAY TOO PRICEY for what you get. We recently stayed at Chalk Bluff River Resort for a family get together. The bluff and river were amazing! Clear water, gorgeous view. However, cabins were lackluster at best. They were not well cleaned, had no stove or oven (not mentioned on the website), and the bathroom/showers were disgusting. Many lightbulbs were out and outlets weren't working. We were there for a reunion, so we were able to see several different cabins...none were good. I do have to say that there were tons of trees, so that was a plus. The other thing that I didn't love was the amount of day passes that were sold. The river bank was SUPER crowded and trash was everywhere. I did see workers come by and pick up trash once while we were there (3 days, all day). read more

My family has gone to chalk bluff every year for the past 4 years. It WAS a great place. Unfortunately it's waaaaay too packed now. If you go on a weekend you will be stacked on top of one another and there's barely any room to swim. I really wish the owners would cap off the amount of Day Passes they let in. The pros: River is beautiful, views are spectacular, crowds are minimal on non-weekend days. Great spot for kids who like water play and animals. River is like a large natural wading pool so depth is not much of a concern for kids playing and swimming. Several large pens with horses, goats, cows, and other animals that can be fed by hand for the cost of a small bag of feed at the office. The cons: "Resort" is quite a stretch. Cabins are dumpy and structures around the entire area need lots of attention. This place is probably best as a tent or RV camping spot. Jumping pillow for kids lays uninflated most of the time. We departed on Saturday morning and could tell weekend days are when the crowds get big. Doesn't seem to be much enforcement of cleanup as even the staff told us a lot of people leave their junk and even their canopies behind. The formal animal tour is $50 per person, not sure who even does it for that. We arrived just past closing time and their signage says to pick up keys and info at a designated mail box in front of the office. Nothing was available and we were not able to call anyone as we had no cell service in the area. Had to drive around for a while until we found a staff member who didn't know what to do. After that, and then finding that our key only worked on one side of the cabin, and then walking into what is basically one step up from an old tent, first impressions were shot. But, in the end we managed to have a good time and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves on the river that we had mostly to ourselves since we were there on a Friday. This can be a decent place to go if you tent or RV camp on the right days and adjust your expectations. read more

We had the best day ever at Chalk Bluff! We did one of the animal encounters and got to hold/feed monkeys, a fennec fox, kangaroos, zebras, giraffes, a camel and sloths. Our guide was fantastic and made our experience perfect! We will definitely be back! read more

(First time camping in Texas) We were very excited to spend time with family and friends camping for the weekend (we rented 3 cabins in total). Immediately, while driving through the campground towards our cabins we disappointed. The grounds (land and cabins) looked extremely neglected (dirty grounds, run-down cabins). Once we reached our campground we were even more so disappointed. The grass was above ankle height, the inside of the cabins were extremely dated and in poor condition (note: yes, we are camping... but for $140 a night we were expecting nicer interiors). The lack of organization and planning from the ground staff was lacking; while my wife and I were enjoying a beverage outside one of the grounds-keepers pulled up with a tractor to remove a huge tree branch, all the while disturbing the grounds and caused a huge cloud of dust and dirt. Not a pleasant experience at all. This should've been done before any guests arrived, the cabins had been rented a week in advance. Here are the main issues: --For $140 a night the cabins are lacking in upkeep. --The grounds were dirty (cans, plastic bottles, and trash). --Two of our cabins had no hot water for the whole weekend (note: we advised the front staff). --Toilets were leaking in two of our cabins(disgusting urine and feces on the floor). --once we checked out and after expressing our issues (during our stay and on checkout) no credit was offered. All in all, this place is completely outdated and in need of some serious rehab. For the money, just go up the road to Garner State Park--100 times better, GUARANTEED (our family is from Texas and have been to Garner, they showed us pictures and videos of their actual--multiple--visits). read more

I love this place water is great sight are great people up front are very nice. I have been coming to this place since I was a kid and started bring my girls here since they were little. If you are used to million dollar resort hotels this is not a place for you but if you really like being out doors and enjoying nature this is a great park and yes it's a river surrounded by rocks but in my opinion that's what makes it great if you want to swim there is deep areas but if you have little ones there is also shallow area for them to play. The little safari I would recommend the animals are wonderful to inter act with my favorite is blue the camal. We will keep coming back as long as its open. read more

Those who gave this resort a bad rating obviously do not know what camping is all about! My wife and I stay here every year in our beautiful RV! We love the Nueces river and enjoy basking in the sunshine. The road to get was great(they shaved it down) much smoother ride getting in. True camping is enjoying the wonderful outdoors. The water is clear and the scenery is beautiful but it's not exactly a well kept secret. Be prepared to carry your gear from parking to 50-200 yards away depending on where you can find a spot. Positives first... friendly staff, exotic animals, short trek to beautiful river access, crystal clear water, $15 hayride gets you semi-close to the giraffes, ostriches, and deer, some free farm animal exhibits for feeding. NO WIFI or cell service for major carriers. As an RVer: Horrible unlevel dirt road going in/out, sandy chalk covers everything, no shade for RVers, restrooms and showers are bare bones with no tp, dumpsters weren't emptied for a full week even though they were overflowing, very pricey "donations" ($100-$200) for animal encounters, cabins looked rough from the outside, river access is shared with lots of day visitors, the locations is desolate, website and social media are very vague. read more

My young kids and I went for a day trip and I couldn't be happier with our experience! I was surprised by the low ratings. It's not really a resort that you'd imagine when going to a hotel chain type of resort. The bathrooms are about like many bathrooms we've used in various state and city parks. But I saw workers cleaning them and replacing toilet paper. The animals were gentle and my kids loved petting them and seeing them up close! The air pillow was a big hit with my kids as well. The staff was friendly and down to earth! The playground is in a gorgeous setting of giant live oak trees. And the river is perfect for families with younger kids because it has many shallow, slower flowing areas to enjoy. It is a beautiful place to spend a day or two! I would have no problem renting a cabin here. I will certainly go back again. I wouldn't let the negative ratings stop you from visiting read more

Used to be a place to come and enjoy the cold clear water..well..the water is still cold and clear..if the people who use this place would just PICK UP their garbage! The cabins are primitive.. just a place to sleep..no 5 star accommodation here. The air conditioner in our cabin was held together by duct tape. The neighboring cabinet was full of young adults who just threw stuff on the ground. Oh..this is a river..a ROCKY river..you will need some sort of water shoe. read more

It's a shame this place only gets 2 stars imo. The road leading in is an absolute nightmare. My brand new car had a suspension issue immediately on our way out. I had to take it in for repair the following Monday. I wish I would've taken other posts more seriously about how bad it truly was. The price of admission isn't worth it. We didn't stay at the resort and only floated the river. It is beautiful out there. The river is full of rocks so get ready for your feet to hurt. The river is a couple of feet deep except closer to the edge by the trees. They have a zoofari for $50 a person. But you can see the animals drive to and from the river. It's $15 a person. If you lose your wrist band, you have to repay. The water is so fresh. read more

My husband and I took our dog out to Chalk Bluff this past weekend (3/31/-4/2) to do some tent camping, and the family that owns the land was extremely kind to us from the moment we arrived to when we left. My husband cut his finger on a filet knife and we didn't have any medical supplies. I went to the front and asked for supplies and the woman quickly found me some gauze, butterfly band-aids, and some tape to wrap his finger. I've been to Jamaica and I don't even think the water was as clear there as it was at Chalk Bluff. You could see the fish 10 feet below the water, it was so beautiful and clear. Any photos you see just won't do justice on the mesmerizing beauty the water and bluff hold. If you go, please help keep the water clear by picking up any trash you might find to help the place looking great. read more

Ok, what kind of people leave bags, yes bags or beer cans, broken cabanas and used baby diapers around after using a recreation area? Even more, what kind of management company does little to enforce trash management and standards. Ran into a family that had been camping that picked up the trash from the family that had made this incredible mess. They told the management about the refuse... and did nothing to pick it up. In fact, the other visiting family put it in the dumpster, and the wildlife got hold of it that evening. If I were you, stay away, the water is very clear, but find another place to do business up the river... Remember, go up river, or else you may be swimming with used baby burrito diapers flowing around you. Absolutely disgusting. read more
