Having driven by Split Rock Distilling a number of times we finally pulled in to check it out…read more Great signage so easy to spot and good amount of parking. Also a beautifully designed spot inside the red barn. They offer tastings of their vast variety of spirit offerings which was great. My wife and I sampled their blueberry vodka since she loves blueberries and I sampled their barrel rested gin. That was fantastic as well and had enough unique notes to make it stand out from your typical gin. The worker was super friendly and explained everything and was ready to answer any questions we had. Besides the spirit samples we could also try any of their syrups too. They had a huge selection of those too. Enjoyed the blueberry vodka enough to grab a bottle to enjoy in cocktail form. Which does bring me to my only suggestion, I do wish they had a cocktail bar (I suspect it would be a more intense license for them). The samples were good but I do think being able to try them in a cocktail would be preferred. Still highly recommend visiting!

Definitely something everyone needs to try. The homemade syrups are also fantastic. We bought the blackberry and maple and they have been great to use as mixers in both cocktails, homemade sodas, and coffee. The owner really knew his stuff and gave a great experience talking through all of the profiles.

Just to be clear, we did not go on a long drinking weekend in Maine!…read more We did go to Cold River Vodka for a tasting though. Wow! First off, their blueberry vodka (made with Maine Blueberries) may be the best Vodka I've ever had. Their gin, also amazing. Their aged vodka tastes like scotch! The place is fun, the crew is fun! I also learned the origin of English folk drinking Gin and Tonic (it was to help with Malaria)! It is illegal to ship alcohol in the US, so you have to carry it home in your suitcase. I am happy to say all three bottles made it home safely!!!

Vodka and gin are made and bottled right on site here using local Maine potatoes in the process. The entire business and production area is housed in a lovely old building with the distillery operation located on the main level. One flight up finds you in the tasting and salesroom. There was a tour already in progress when we arrived so we went right up to the tasting room where we had the place to ourselves along with the lovely staff person. She poured us tastes of their two signature vodkas: the regular and the blueberry flavored. Along with potatoes, blueberries are another signature Maine crop. Both vodkas were delicious. Normally, I don't think vodka tastes like much of anything and it's more about how smoothly it goes down. The plain vodka had a smooth and subtle flavor to it; very clean, crisp and easy to drink. While I am not very knowledgeable about flavored vodkas what I can tell you is that the blueberry had a lovely natural aroma of fresh blueberries with a hint of their flavor that was not overwhelming. It was subtle and agreeable. We purchased a bottle of the plain vodka; they were out of the blueberry. I turned down a taste of the gin since I don't care for it. I will use the bottle we bought simply to sip or in martinis. It's too good on its own to dilute with anything else and I think should be enjoyed as simply as possible. The tasting room also sells an array t-shirts and baseball hats and other souvenirs emblazoned with the name of the product: Cold River Vodka. On our way out, the tour that had been in progress was over. The tour guide greeted us warmly and offered us our own private tour which was very kind. Seeing all the gleaming equipment along with the huge 1,000 pound sacks of potatoes was quite something. This is a small but impressive operation. What we found here was delicious locally crafted vodka using all local ingredients, especially those Maine potatoes. We're happy we discovered Cold River.

There are cocktail flights available, and we added on an additional cocktail for an additional $4. Friendly service, nice space, you can even get a growler of a cocktail to take home as the cocktails are pre-mixed. Cozy and comfortable atmosphere - it felt genuine here. There's some swag to purchase as well as a refrigerator with canned cocktails and bottles of spirits for sale. Nice bar and seating area - I'd definitely go back.

The interior is spacious and chic, everyone greets you with a smile, and the service is just so kind. The cocktails are also delicious and reasonably priced: highly recommend doing the cocktail flight ($11 for three pours) so you can try a variety! We usually order their popcorn as well: $5 for a bowl with unlimited refills. Great cocktails + great popcorn + any of the boardgames that they have on hand = a perfect rainy-day afternoon. I also have to give a special shout-out to the staff at Three of Strong for allowing me to host part of my 30th birthday at the distillery when a previously planned picnic got rained out. I cannot emphasize enough how welcoming and helpful everyone was, setting tables up last minute to seat our large group, getting us paper plates, a knife, and a lighter when I was woefully unprepared for the cake-cutting, and slinging great drinks all afternoon to keep everyone entertained. We've since moved out of Portland, but Three of Strong remains one of our favorite go-to's during our time there. I'd give them 10 stars if they could, and you can be sure we'll be visiting next time we're back in town!
