Senroppon Salad
Michele L.

We had a pretty heavy dinner the other day, so today, I was looking to balance that with a greener meal while we were out. I ended up choosing Cha Ya since it was around the area where we needed to be and it turned out to be the perfect choice. We happened to come around noon on a Monday so it was pretty empty. Parking can be a little hectic around the area, but you can get lucky with residential parking as well. They accept cash or Venmo at this time only. Between my partner and I, we got the Senroppon Salad, Hasami Age and a Hana Gomoku. The Senroppon Salad came pretty quickly. It's composed of a lot of shredded root veggies, some tofu strips, edamame, sprouts and seeds mixed with a light soy vinaigrette. I found some inspiration while having this. It's a very refreshing, non-green, healthy salad. Quite unique! The vinaigrette gets a little stronger when you get to the bottom of the salad since those have been sitting in the dressing for a while. Next, the Hasami Age was something my partner was intrigued about. It's almost like a sushi roll, but made the filling is just corn and tofu. They're wrapped with a soybean sheet and nori and then lightly battered and fried. It turned out really delicious! The batter was indeed on the lighter side and it didn't feel heavy or oily at all. The corn and tofu mix was a little bland, so I wished they put a bit more veggie variety in there for different taste and texture. The almond sauce worked really well with it. If I have to describe this dish, it's like the offspring of a sushi roll and spring roll, haha. Lastly, the Hana Gomoku! This is like a very healthy Buddha bowl. All the ingredients were laid out neatly on top and there was a lot of veggie varieties! I love that they mixed hijiki into the rice, so it not only added flavor to the base, but also some texture. It was beautiful and delicious. We had a nice, quiet, and enjoyable meal here. I hope to try some of their other menu items when we're around Berkeley again!

The food is always a hit, as someone who doesn't eat any fish, this place is absolutely wonderful catering. The service is well, and foods brought to your table quickly. Small place with only about 10 tables, very cozy and makes eating the meal even more special. This is a go to spot whenever I'm in Berkley as the flavors are Individually noticeable, yet come together so pleasantly.

Delivery order was a bit sad looking after the travel. Quality and taste made up for it. Especially loved the potato croquette in the curry and the way they steamed the veg separately was super inspiring. Back in the college days I used to just boil it all together and it was mushy/absorbed all the individual flavors. Definitely get the sea veg salad and the summer greens roll - super refreshing. Everything was topped with Kaiware sprouts and a variety of carefully selected/handled veg. Bookmarked forever, definitely will be a go-to healthy delivery selection if they stay in our range!

Not the best vegetarian sushi place I have been to. Service was ok, the place needs an update and smelled of bleach. Not well lit. The food was ok,nothing special. The napkin on the table they use for silverware is a hard bathroom paper towel! Wow... Asparagus was cold. The veggies rice bowl was bland no flavor and had a weird smell. I think it was the bowl and spoon, Maybe the dishwasher needs fixing... the bun was way too hot, I had to cut in half to cool off. I believe it was microwaved not steamed. And the plate color was scraped/scratched off. Time for new plates. To pay its cash or Venmo app only.

It was disappointing. Everything tasted the same from the lack of seasoning and same sauce poured on everything.

Everything was beautiful and very fresh! Such a unique restaurant that offers a vegetarian's dream for Japanese food. Very healthy and guilt-free food that looks and tastes like it's made with love. I wish there were more locations!

The food could have little more flavorful with spices. The customer service was amazing and super polite. Its clean place but not fancy.

Salted just right, paired nicely with the scallion Organic Chicken Karage - 4/5: Very good. 97% of the way there to the karage I had in Japan. So far the best Karage like in Japan has been Gochi in Cupertino. Just FYI. Black Miso Cod - 5/5: very well cooked Cod. Juicy and flavorful without being dry. Sake sashimi - 4/5: Good and fresh. Bluefin Tuna sashimi - 4/5: After eating the one with truffle paste, this was knocked down a notch, but still very good. Wagyu&Iberiko Pork Potsticker - 3/5: The wagyu flavor did not come out in this potsticker. It was nicely crisp on the bottom, but would skip this next time to try other items. Hokkaido Uni - 5/5: fresh and good Negitoro Maki 6pc - 3/5: good, but would skip this next time to try other items. Nothing special stood out in this. Homemade Curry Croquettes 2pc - 4/5: This was perfectly crisp on the inside with the juicy internal curry minced beef. This was good. Corn Tempura 2pc - 5/5: This was even better than I expected. Corn was sweet, with a nice crispy exterior. Would order this again! Albacore Tataki - 5/5: Love this dish, where the ponzu is lightly spread without overpowering the fish. Overall, the quality of the food was top notch. The price tag matches, and is to be expected. I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere of the restaurant. The dishes are innovative, creative, bold, and the service is excellent. Reminds me of Japan but yet uniquely Californian. We tried the follow (menu seems seasonal): Beautiful dark wooden tone interior with modern, abstract painting and decors of similar tones. The service is amazing. Everything was arranged beautifully, thoughtfully. The table is set well. The service and staff feel Michelin level. Friendly, attentive and asks about allergens and preferences. One can tell the kitchen and staff communicate well. There are a lot of thoughts went in the restaurant. I wouldn't say it is 100% Japanese at all. In fact, it merely embodies the spirit and styles/ inspiration of its cuisine. There are similar names and resemblance, it is its own school of cuisine. The Maguro - delicious, excellent, sashimi quality. High quality. Ordered 2nds, the second was bit less sashimi like, different fish/ different cut perhaps but overall, one of the best Maguro cuts I had outside Japan. A great selection of house cocktails with delicious Unagi donburi. Soft centered marinated eggs. Slow cooked berkshire baby back pork ribs. Nice potato salad. Slightly dry, beautifully arranged. Grilled bacon mochi. The veggie okonomiyaki like tempura is a highlight and comes highly recommended. It's unique, and we love it. Hotate tostada : nice uni, scallops were a bit briny, beautiful concept. Love to see a new rendition of this. Special dessert matcha cheese.delicious rich and lush. French press coffee, delicious high quality (On the menu, I saw hiyashi chuka, great memories from Japan. We didn't get to try it. But it's rare to see that on the menu here. Mentaiko pasta also sounds amazing.) RSVP is strongly recommended. The outdoor seatings are great but can get cold in the bay area. We sat indoors and loved it. $$$$ pricey but worth a try!

We weren't actually hungry so we shared the following: TONKOTSU - $16.50 (Regular) Pork Belly Chashu, Bamboo Shoots, Red Onion, Wood Ear Mushrooms, Green Onion, Ajitama Egg. You get a choice of noodles to pick: 1.) Hakata - Thin Straight 2.) Sapporo - Medium Thick Wavy Figured since it's my first time here, I choose the most basic version of their bowl of ramen. I chose Sapparo and for some reason expected it to be thicker/wider, but regardless it was still good! The presentation of this bowl is just gorgeous, served on a small wooden platter. The red onion is chopped, and the pork Belly is quite tender. Regarding the egg, you get just half. Overall this bowl of ramen is creamy, rich, and the right amount of flavor and salt. But still make sure to drink at least a glass of water! CREAMY CHASHU PORK CROQUETTES - $8.50 I have never seen anything like this so I must give it a try! It actually didn't come out piping hot, so I was able to drive in right away! It was definitely creamy (like ramen) and had pieces of the Chau's pork, encased in a crispy and warm batter that was deep fried. It also comes with a katsu sauce and I really enjoyed it. Chewy sure but doesn't quite rival the bounciness of Mensho's mochi noodles. It's delicious all the same though. The prices are a bit high, given that bowls only come with one chashu slice and half an egg, but excusable given the dire state of our economy. Will I say this is the best ramen I've ever had? Probably not. But it's a very delicious bowl that'll satisfy any ramen hankering.
