I recently visited the CeX store in Cardiff St David's to trade in my Samsung phone (in excellent condition) for an A-grade Huawei model. Unfortunately, the experience has been extremely disappointing. When I got the phone home, it wouldn't charge properly due to a faulty connection, and it immediately displayed a battery fault on the screen. Clearly, this was not the "A-grade" quality I was promised. Due to work commitments, I was away for six weeks and couldn't return the device right away. When I finally made it back to the store, I asked for an exchange -- but there were no phones available at a similar price point. The only alternatives were hundreds of pounds more expensive. I then asked for a refund, as I had clearly been sold a faulty item, but was told that only a credit note could be issued. This left me without a working phone and out of pocket for a product that was defective from the start. Selling a faulty device and refusing a refund goes completely against basic consumer rights. CeX seriously needs to review how it handles quality checks and customer service in cases like this. Very disappointed with the experience -- I expected much better. read more

This branch of CeX is quite a nice, cool store, it is slightly smaller than other branches I have visited such as Manchester and Bury, but the layout at this branch in St David's just is nicer and more modern, and of course it is easier to browse, look around and go in and out of the store quickly, as there isn't really long queues, which I'm used to when visiting CeX in my home town, which puts me off the store alltogether. The prices here are average, some products are good value and good buys, but others are quite expensive, and sometimes cost the same as buying a new product at high street retailers or Amazon. This store still isn't perfect however and there are some flaws, extending the size of this store and keeping it in its' current format would be great, as well as perhaps focusing on selling a wider range of products, albeit as a store which relies on trade-ins, I understand this can be hard but for now I'm pleased to report that this branch of Central Entertainment Exchange (CeX) does deserve a solid 3 star rating read more

Well someone had to do it I suppose...! CeX! Yep! They did it alright! So now we got little baby Cex's popping up all over the place! Great! Cardiff's branch of Cex is right next to the bus and railway station, a fantastic spot for a shop that buys and sells electronic equipment, games, DVD's and CD's. I'm not sure how I feel about all of these modern day pawnbrokers that keep on appearing over night. Some of them are hideous, like Cash Convertors in Bristol. But this seems to be kind of okay... there's no super-rip off loan deals as far as I can see, and they do fundraising for Haiti and are really pro recycling. But if I'm honest, the latter makes me a little uneasy. With my cynical head on I can see how things could all fit neatly together to make CeX even more profitable that it would normally be. You see, they're asking people to consider 'donating stuff' instead of selling it. Being green and raising money for charity are two entirely feasible reasons for requesting that people just give them stuff... but this is a commercial concern, not a charity... so, all they do is turn it around and sell it for a few quid. That's 100% profit from a no-cost item! Bargain! So what if they have to thrown a few coins in the direction of Haiti...? They're still quids in aren't they? read more

This place is absolutely awesome. I recently picked up the Band of Brothers box set here for £6 which is fantastic value. It's all mainly second hand stuff but I've bought plenty of items here and all have been of impeccable quality. Their biggest triumph is cheap DVDs. There's hundreds here, both new and old films and prices that are comparable to what you would pay over the internet, The most recent Quentin Tarantino film I recently spotted in here for a fiver. If you're got a tenner to blow you can still walk away with two or three great films. Try doing that in HMV! They have good prices for computer games too, and though the selection is nowhere near as impressive as the DVD section, the prices are still almost unbeatable. They deal in computers, mobile phones, GPSs and anything people want to trade in really. I don't pay much attention to that section but it still looks like there's some good deals to be had. If you're looking for a game or DVD, check here first before going down to HMV, as 99% of the time CEX will have it, and it will be a good deal cheaper too. read more

I don't like going in this shop. There always seems to be loads of staff just standing around chatting and I feel like they all stare at everyone who comes in. Maybe its just cos i'm a girl and its a bit of a man's shop but I would never go in there by myself. The thing is it done have good value second hand games and DVD's and you can also swap your old stuff for other stuff including mobile phones and games accessories. I'm all for saving a bit of money on already overpriced stuff but I'd just feel a lot more conformable shopping for it from the privacy of my home were no one can judge my rubbish taste! read more

If you want DVD's and games that are cheap and you don't mind they are second hand the CEX is the place to go. CEX offers some of the latest releases of DVD's at a bargain price. The DVD's have either been watched once or not at all. They have such a wide spread of games as well that you will be wanting to buy everything they have because it's so cheap. As I mentioned CEX has games and DVD's but they also have old mobile phones and gaming consoles that are sold at a bargain price. I cannot comment on the quality of them, as I have never bought one. I have purchased many games and DVD's from there and at first I was sceptic at purchasing some because I thought I would have some problems with DVD's not working but I am happy to say that I have never had any problems with the purchases I have had. The prices are so brilliant I remember buying 6 DVD's for £10, which is staggering. As my DVD collection builds I want to add more DVD's from this store because they are so cheap. If you don't mind having a second hand DVD then go to CEX because you will find some amazing deals you won't find anywhere else. read more

This is basically the same idea as Cash Generator or Cash Converters. You take your DVDs or console games, mobile phones, consoles, laptops, pc, video cameras, pcs or ipods in and swap them for money when you're strapped for cash. What you always need to be aware of with this kind of thing is that the shop will want to sell the item on and make a profit. In order to do so they are more than likely going to offer you a price which is considerably lower than you would expect to receive if you were selling the item direct to another person. On the flip side of that, you may pay slightly more to Cex for an item you buy there second hand than you would if you were buying direct from another person. I only ever wanted to sell this shop anything once and they didn't really seem like they wanted to buy it. I had a mobile phone, a good one, and took it there but they kept telling me to come back at a time in the morning which wasn't possible for me so I sent it off to envirophone in the end. As for buying, the staff are very helpful when you want to spend some money in this store. I've never been asked to come back at an unsuitable time of day when I was buying a DVD or new ipod. read more

For a buyer, much of a second-hand stuff in CEX is pretty overpriced in my opinion. You could find most of the PS3 and Wii games cheaper online, possibly even new. Some of the iPods they sell 'B grade' used are priced higher than buying the exact same thing NEW on Amazon or Play.com! So unless you're desperate to play a game right NOW, go online instead. I've never sold anything in there but a friend of mine has and he says they are (quite rightly) very strict on the required I.D., and they will give you a pretty hard time criticising the condition of the stuff you're selling and devaluing it a lot. So all in all they must be doing a nice little earner there but as a buyer there are better places to go. read more

If you like being served by socially inept nerds that you can barely hear talking over blaring heavy metal music, then CeX Cardiff is the place for you. Not only was I offered a poor price for my items, but the particular nerd that served me (who incidentally, never even looked me in the eye) then slapped a selling price ticket on it for double the price in front of my very eyes. If you can get that for it poindexter, then so can I. Requesting my items back, I left the premises making sure not to touch any of the horrible second hand items, for fear of contracting something nasty. read more

The store is okay. CEX often seem to employ the outcasts i.e emo, goth, those that have a lot of tattoos and so on. Also it's very frustrating to be told by somebody who presents as having a very novice level of experience what your item is worth, for instance I had some girl with the attitude of 'I don't want to be here' (here meaning on this earth) tell me my iphone was worth £250. I asked to talk to the manager (who seemed like an ex rogue trader) tell me it was actually worth £650 to them and shrugged his shoulders when I told him I could have ended up with £400 less of I hadn't of asked to speak to him. CEX can be okay if you are lucky and also if you first check and hold them to the website's prices of items you sell (or buy) from them. read more
