I am disappointed in my food. I ordered chicken fajita quesadilla and when it came out it was only chicken and cheese. They said it was fajita meat. Since when does anything fajita come without onions and peppers. They offered to make me veggies but I didn't want to wait any longer. I am very disappointed. Excellent Mexican establishment. Everything we tried was spectacular. I see a lot of negative reviews due to the busy nature of this small place. Busy? Oh yeah, but would they be consistently busy if the food wasn't bomb? Although the staff is swamped, the cuisine is well worth the wait. People are basically lined up out the door. We had the Ceviche, Shrimp Diablo, Green Enchiladas, and the sampler platter. All were great and I have no critiques whatsoever. The food was incredible, the service was excellent. They were very busy so we had to sit at the bar but the entire staff was friendly and helpful. Even the cooks behind the bar were asking us if we needed refills. It was a rather loud and upbeat environment, but not to the point where you couldn't enjoy yourself. This is my new favorite place to eat! I was told about their traditional Papusa (as an appetizer) which they told me was a traditional El Salvadorian Food. It was great very unique. I appreciate the chance to try something traditional. The Chicken enchiladas are my favorite, but I have also enjoyed their Slammed nachos as a meal, and also their tequila lime chicken. I was complete disappointed and will never return. I ordered fish tacos. Problem was that upon looking inside them I discovered that each of three tacos had just a few tiny, dime-size pieces of fish in them. The rest of the contents was actually unidentifiable - maybe beans? When I pointed this out to the waitress she said, "oh..you were expecting something else." Of course I was for $8+. Off she went. Later the hostess asked us how our meals were. She told me I should have ordered the fish fillet. My wife had a chili relleno which she said was good but she was disappointed with the small portion. The complete lack of concern for customer satisfaction at this restaurant, the meager portions we received, and the ambient noise from clanging plates will keep us away from this place. I really liked this restaurant! The food and atmosphere are so authentic I thought I was in mexico. However, the wait at the beginning was very long, and so people waited around the front door. That might have been our fault for going at noon, but I wished there was more space for us to wait. Other than that, we had a great time! The salsa was awesome and my taco was spicy and delicious. Great food, great service, quality prices. We did a large to go order for work and just ran over to pick it up. The food was ready, hot, and they were very friendly. I had the fajita quesadilla, rice and beans, and chips and salsa. I couldn't finish my lunch as the portions were very generous. Love this place and highly recommend. Former Chicagoan here. My fiance and I love Mexican food and have tried all sorts of places in Chicago, which is supposed to be a great place for food in general. I must say Cesars Old Mexico is easily the best place to eat in Springfield and better than any Mexican restaurant we've tried in Chicago. This place is our style and definitely our favorite place to eat, ever. Period. This is saying a lot. My fiance is a very tough food critic and the sheer joy I saw in her eating here I knew she was going to love it. It almost brought her to tears lol. We loved everything about it. Margaritas were fantastic. Easily the best ones we've ever had. The food was awesome, home made, my plate was polished clean. Our waiter Julian, was very nice and attentive but not too attentive, really top notch, friendly, and gave great recommendations. Not to mention, he looked like Dave Grohl, probably the best musician of all time, which is awesome, I'm a big fan lol. One of the owners stopped by our table and she was very nice, happy, energetic, just genuinely a good person. The atmosphere overall here was just happy and we felt very comfortable. My husband happened to read about Cesar's Old Mexico in an issue of 417 magazine. We tried it today for the first time and loved it. Great service. Brought out chops and salsa immediately. Their Skinny Margaritas are the best we've ever tasted. Food was quick and delicious. It's about a 20 mins drive from our house to get there. There are countless other Mexican restaurants in between, but this is going to be our spot from now on. read more

I'm a very easy-to-please person and never complain but this was the worst dining experience I've ever had. I don't understand the good reviews. We were a party of four and walked in. There was no one to greet us (which is no big deal) so we just took a seat. Three groups of people walked in after us and also took a seat. They all had their menus and chips before we were even acknowledged. We finally got the server's attention and ordered drinks. My daughter and I ordered water with lemon but we didn't get lemon. We just let it slide not wanting to be difficult. Then my daughter ordered the queso flameado for an appetizer but got regular queso dip. She told him about the mix-up and he acted irritated. He finally brings us the correct appetizer but still hadn't taken our order. We finished up the dip and noticed the people next to us (who came in after us) already had their food! He finally comes to take our order (we are starving at this point). Eventually we get our food but NO silverware. We ask politely for silverware. I watched him attend to 3 tables and he still wasn't getting our silverware. Our food was getting cold so I spotted the silverware and got it myself. The food was horrible....the chile relleno my daughter ordered was mush and she didn't even get her enchilada. The tacos were nasty...almost like canned meat...and way too salty. The cheese in my enchilada wasn't even melted. My boyfriend's tamale was made with the same nasty 'ground beef'. My son-in-law said his fajitas were okay but nothing special. We paid over $60 for this!! If I could give 0 stars, I would. We will never be back. read more

This was the.... 3rd? time trying this restaurant because, in a nutshell, their salsa has decent flavor compared to about every other mexican restaurant in this town. My review is mainly about service this time since the food was decent. We live close and use to walk to Big Easy at least 1x week and were wanting to develop a similar habit with this place. It was 90' outside and at least 80' inside the restaurant on a Tuesday. When we walked in there were 2 tables available, one of which was sandwiched tightly between two other tables that were seated and access was quite limited for us so we took the more accessible table (2 of us in party). There were also a few seats available around the bar, but still quite cramped. We were seated a good 5-10 minutes before anyone else entered the restaurant, at which point, 2 parties of 2 came in within minutes of each other, taking up the other table and the bar seats. Both parties immediately acknowledged by 2 different wait staff as we still sat without menus, chips, or even a verbal acknowledgement. Finally, as a waitress walked by heading back to the back incidentally holding menus in her hand, we asked if we could get some service. She barely acknowledged our plea for service but was kind enough to at least leave the 2 menus for us. A second waitress came a few moments later with the chips and sauce, after what appeared to be a debate between wait staff. By that time, there was a discussion between my husband and I whether or not we should even stay. A few minutes later the first waitress came back without apology, saying "looks like I am going to be your waitress, I guess it's my turn". What does that even mean........ I will say this, there is a terrible amount of fair mexican restaurants in Springfield, MO, several of which have pretty decent food and being an implant from a more culturally diverse part of the country, I must say that no restaurant in this town's food is that good to have that poor of service. We finally ordered chipotle chicken for me and carnitas for husband. A third group of 3 people walked in a few minutes after we ordered and were served their meal at least 10 minutes before us. Everything was a struggle for this meal, including getting our silverware and spare napkins. The entire population of the restaurant changed by the time we got our food (including 4 separate parties seated after us) and took us another eternity to get our check to cash out. We have had similar experiences all 3 times eating here, but I must say, at least the food was decent this time. My husband tries to persuade me often to eat here because he likes the sauce but I think this experience left enough of a bad taste in his mouth that next time he suggests it, I'll be able to remind him even he said "never again". If this place does as well as it seems and they are fortunate enough to expand into a larger building, I may be willing to try them again. Until then, the cramped, hot, ignored, waaay to long for 2 people to eat experience can go to those who feel this food is worth it. read more
