Started great, ended with filing complaints with the FCC and Iowa AG. Signing up was a great experience. So was the install. Didn't have cause to contact them until the internet speed was slow...like 4 download and 6 upload...yes, that is correct, the upload was faster than download. In the country, I have few options. Was tired of dealing with it and I could tell their customer service model had changed. Have since gone with Starlink. I cancelled with Centurylink using their app about a week before the end of the billing period and it showed me a prorated amount. I was waiting for the online amount to adjust. It didn't. Called customer service and was surprised to get someone domestically. She said my cancellation order didn't go through but that she could see I tried to cancel using the app...didn't have an explanation on why it didn't go through. Told me the prorated amount. I asked about paying the final bill and was told I'd receive a paper bill in the mail. Waiting for that paper bill, I received a "courtesy" email with an amount due that was more than the prorated amount. Using Chat, I chatted with non-domestic customer service reps and discovered they charged me a late fee. Long story short, and after chatting with a supervisor, they will not remove the late fee. Why would I have paid the full amount when I was told it would be prorated and a paper bill was forthcoming? Not my fault (now my problem) their billing system would not update the amount due to reflect the prorated amount and they would have had to refund the overpayment...and probably good luck there...more time and effort on my part. I paid the bill, minus the $18.00 late fee and filed my complaints. Not sure what happened to them, but steer clear! read more

I am done with Century Link internet service. Consumers are better off with dial up, if it even still exists! I must say, of all utility service providers I have had -- and I have lived in several countries, in numerous cities -- I have never had a more frustrating and disappointing experience. In a nutshell, during the entire time I was with Century Link it has been one missed opportunity after another to satisfy my simple requests, with irrelevant and often wrong information provided to me, incorrect and unscheduled appointments made without my authorization, absurd wait times on their customer service lines, disconnections after waiting 40 minutes, and simply put, awful internet service. I ordered 60 Mbps, and on average it was about 5 to 10 Mbps! I did not get what I was offered when I signed up, never even came close to what the services were promised and wasted time and became extremely frustrated with ill-conceived and repetitive solutions from artificial 'intelligence' recorded Century Link customer service lines. Conservatively, in the aggregate, I have spent over 20 hours over two months dealing with Century Link since installation. Not only was it highly stressful, most importantly, extremely distracting from work. This is not how any company should run their business. Oh, and during this entire time, even though I requested from Century Link through email a simple phone call and scheduled appointment over a 6.5 week period on numerous occasions, I never received either. I never spoke to one single person. It's no wonder the reviews for their service are 1 star at best. I wish i had seen these first. read more

The internet constantly drops regardless if I'm using WiFI or direct connect. Plus I have a fiber line with 1Gb (1000mb) Internet that has never gotten even 200mb. Typically my internet speed is 10-20mb unless I reboot everything then I get over 100mb for 1 day, day to 50mb, day 3 is 20mb and so on until it doesn't work until I reboot again. This was the worst customer service I've experience from any business I've ever used. Rude customer service reps, long wait times, refusing to apologize for awful treatment. It took 8 phone calls just to move my service to a new home....only to wait home all day and have the installers go to my old address. If they would have called me to explain what happened, they could have still performed the service the same day. But no call. When I called to tell them they didn't show up the rep told me they did go to the old address but they had no idea why. (Still, no apology.) I really wish I had to stop writing reviews for this place, so hopefully this will be the 3rd and final review in this saga. I cancelled service with CenturyLink the date of my last Yelp review (7/3) and made sure to return all the routers and equipment they had sent well within the 30-day return period. I was told there would be no additional charges as long as I returned the equipment since the account had be cancelled. This week I received a billing statement to my address that said "for CenturyLink services through July 29th". We have NOT had internet in our apartment since the 23rd of June. I'm still being charged for an account that doesn't exist and a service that isn't being provided. This place is a huge joke, their customer service is still nonexistent (even more so if you try to use their live chat feature; be prepared to wait over an hour to chat with a rep), and they will still try to scam you out of every dollar you have. read more

This experience has been an absolute nightmare. During the course of the contract I was receiving just under 30% of the speed that was guaranteed. If that wasn't enough, after the contract was terminated, paid off (modem was also mailed back) IN STORE, and I had moved, I get a debt collection letter TWO YEARS later--yes two--to my home address in a DIFFERENT state saying I owe this joke of a company dues. I cant imagine what this company has done in the past to people's credit for wrongful and illegal charges after their contracts were over. I just finished filing a complaint within the FTC, as the reviewer before me had also done. For the record, I have physical copies of my receipts and tracking numbers that buttress my statement. Customer service is stupefyingly disorganized. Coralville and Iowa City locations don't have the ability to put callers on hold if lines are busy (you can end up calling about 20 times over the course of hours to talk to someone), and national billing numbers will transfer you to people who cannot articulate their information in understandable english. It is worth mentioning that I talked to a very polite worker at the Coralville location who tried to help, although I can't help but believe this whole mess started either due to worker mistake or shady business practices. I have been harassed by collection company calls, sometimes 3-7 times/day with different numbers since last December as early and late as 7am and 9pm, respectively. It wasn't until learning of the receipt of a letter from my permanent address in a different state that these calls were about Century Link; if I would answer one of these calls they wouldn't tell me the premise, but rather that I immediately tell them my billing information. This lead me to believe they were just phishing scams and to ignore them. Ultimately, I registered my number on the federal no-call list--this did not help. AVOID at all costs, you will be glad. NEVER EVER do business with this company. I'm extremely disappointed I have to even give this review a single star. P.S. If you are like me, you are pigeonholed into picking between mediacom and centurylink. The most accurate analogy is choosing between a turd or a pile of vomit. I heard worse things about mediacom so I took the chance on centurylink. I called and signed up for internet...should be simple right? Well they require someone to come "activate" the internet so that was 10 days wait....but the internet didn't work and when I called they actually said my activation day was another 3 weeks later. There apparently is no system for fixing this mistake and my only option was to wait. Despite telling them not to, they sent me their crappy modem/router that is overpriced...so I had to waste my time printing the label and taking it to UPS. They came and "activated" my internet (this is almost a month after initially calling to set up internet). My "activated" internet didn't work. They had to send a technician a week and a half later which finally made it work. If you want to win in just one aspect of this encounter, do what I did and buy a used centurylink modem from someone on Craigslist. Recently bought a home in Iowa City and setup a appt with Centurylink to have the internet installed. They gave us a timeframe of 1-5 pm that they would be there. They let us know they would not be able to call to let us know they were on the way, we just had to be there. I took a half day off of work and waited, around 4:45 I called and they said the tech would be there between 5:30 and 6. At 6 pm I called again and they said the tech is 15 mins away and just in case gave me another number to call if they didn't show. At 6:20 I called the second line and went round and round with someone to basically learn that no one would be out now. While waiting for a resolution I was "disconnected". I called back again where I got someone willing to look into things for me, it was determined that maybe my place is not capable of having internet (it's a duplex). But no one came to the door or called during that 1-5 pm time. The person on the phone told me I would have to call back the next day to re-setup a tech visit. I called today and they cannot fit me in until February 2018 now. I will be looking elsewhere for internet services. Every time they would apologize and then try and sell me their TV services, no thanks, you can't even get the services that I am willing to pay for correct. read more

This is the worst internet service provider of human history. Just when I thought Mediacom was bad, ha, think again! I had to cancel the service at my current apartment and get service for my new apt. Called CL the first time to get some information, the rep was friendly and seemed like she knew what she was doing. Offered me all this crap and told me I only had to pay $27 to cancel my current service. I SPECIFICALLY told her I can't make this decision until I discuss with my friends. She was like sure I understand. She gave me her email address and said please feel free to email me if you have any questions. Called back a week later to do the cancellation and confirm to set up the new acct. The sec rep told me the first rep screwed everything up and I would have to pay a $200 cancellation fee! Good thing the second rep waived it and I was able to keep the same price offer. However, that first rep already ordered my modem for the new place and shipped it to the new place that I dont even have the keys to! I let them know if that modem gets lost, I am not in charged of paying because I specifically said I will call back to confirm since I was only trying to get some information. Every time you call this place, the customer service tells you different things. They're not consistent and they're no better than a scam company. Seriously, kick this company out of Iowa City. Centurylink is a joke. We switched from Mediacom to Centurylink because Mediacom's service is awful. However I will say compared to Centurylink, Mediacom is the cream of the crop. Centurylink lied to us the minute we signed up with them, when we first signed up we asked them how long it would be until we had Internet, they told us it would only be a few days. A week later we got a letter telling us our service was set to start August 10th, that date was a month away from the date they gave us when we started our service. When we called to ask what was going on they were like, "well there's nothing we can do, you'll have to wait until August 10th." August 10th rolled around, the "technician" came to the house for 20 minutes, skulked around, handed us a modem and left. The modem didn't work right, we called customer service, it took us over an hour for them to tell us that we would have to wait until next Monday to have our problem fixed. It is now the next Monday and we still don't have Internet. The customer service representative, Chris, also tried to make it seem like it was our fault that their modem wasn't working. They are so bad that we are actually considering going back to Mediacom. We didn't even know that it was possible to be worse than Mediacom. Mediocre is too high of a standard for Centurylink. The only reason I am giving them one star is because I can't post without rating them and it is impossible to give them negative stars. read more

I wanted to switch to CenturyLink from my current useless provider, and was given an install date of 11.05 between 12 and 4pm. Not only did no one come, I did not receive a call explaining anything. I called CenturyLink twice to see what's going on, and have received different answers each time: one said there is a problem with the wiring outside the building and they are working on it, and one said there was no tech assigned yet, and they are waiting. Wha?? This does not bode well towards a good relationship with a new customer. It is now 11.07, and I have heard NOTHING. I can understand if there is a technical issue, and am okay with that. What is not okay is not hearing ANYTHING. Come on, CenturyLink. Her landline has been acting up whenever it rains for over 3 months now. She's called and made appointments for a technician to come and fix the issue 4 times and no one shows up. Century Link is now offering a monthly fee to eliminate $80 house calls to fix issues with their service! Problem : Opposed to honoring the relationship with a customer and making it their sole duty to provide the product or service it promises at no additional cost for fixing service interruption, Century link will charge $80 to have a technician address it. Companies are on the hook to fix their own issues to provide the service they offer. If they cannot provide said service, they are in the wrong business. Problem : They believe their customers are so clueless as to how the customer/company relationship works that we will now pay a monthly fee to fix future issues (must be planning on an abundance of them to require monthly charge of $10). Why not exploit the companies abundance of failures by making it a chargeable "feature" on their product offerings. Highly recommend avoiding them! read more

I'll try to make this short but after speaking with probably 20+ different reps throughout 15+ transfers, getting hung up on and never recalled 4 times, and being given a "floor manager's" more or less fake employee number, all over the course of 4 days, suffice it I say we cannot recommend CenturyLink to anyone. Our first indication that something was awry was when I called to check about an earlier install time. They got us in a week earlier than scheduled but that required us to cancel and sign up again...weird. Also weird is that I told the rep that I had been promised a low price of $29.95 for JUST internet but she said that is only an add-on price for when someone buys a landline phone service along with internet. Do I want that? I didn't, so I settled for a higher price and a complimentary $50 gift card for the mixup. Still cheaper than the competition, though, so I figured I was still coming out on top. We were told our service was schedule to start on 1/16 at 5pm, but it didn't. We called and they "guaranteed" it would start by 8pm. It didn't, so instead of call back again, we waited until the morning and tried again. Still no service. That night after my husband and I got home from work, we tried it again and still no DSL light came on so we called tech service. They said there had been an ice storm yesterday in the state over, which was where the tech was coming from, so no one actually turned anything on for us. The woman says that the tech will definitely be out today, though, because they're making up for lost appointments from the day before. Ok fine. We try again that night and nothing. Now we're up to 3 phone calls, heading into the fourth, which will also mark the first of many lies. We call tech support again and the gentleman states that our service IS in fact on (lie) but there is an outage in the area that should be resolved within 24 hours. How convenient. We asked to be notified by phone when the outage was resolved, which he said was no problem and promptly took my phone number, which I'd given countless times already as a piece of verification info for the account, but whatever. We didn't trust them, so here's call 5 and lies 2 and 3: the woman said there WAS an outage BUT our service had never been turned on, as the previous rep had vehemently assured us it had. So we get transferred and promptly hung up on. Mind you, we had given my phone number several times for several different reasons so there's no excuse to be forgotten about. We let that one go because we had already spent over an hour in the phone and it was getting late. After all, with no internet service, this was our evening entertainment. Spoiler alert: We never received a call about the resolution of the outage. We called after 24 hours only to be told that it had been resolved 29 minutes earlier. But regardless of not being called back after TWO promises that we would be contacted and one promise that our service was only struggling because of the outage, we still had no service, which means it really hadn't been turned on yet. No surprise at this point but definitely a major frustration. Mind you, by this point, we had been on the road moving our lives from Philadelphia to Iowa City and using only data along the way. We are still using copious amounts of data at the time of these arguments and have had our service slowed to attempt to use less. It's literally time and money that we're wasting at this point. This next call would span over an hour and half with 7 different transfers. Rather than get into all of the details, the short version goes something like this: No one actually rescheduled service due to that aforementioned ice storm issue so even though the outage was over, we still had no signal because no one ever turned on the service. The earliest they could reschedule for service to be turned on was HALF A MONTH AWAY, which,given that your job requires an internet connection in your home, is unacceptable. We argued through the 7 transfers expressing our incredulity that such a major gaff could happen and that no one was willing or seemingly able to deal with the issue. We made the demand that our service had to be turned on the following day no excuses. The 7th transfer consisted of a bad connection and an individual who did not realize or know that Iowa was a state. I, thoroughly frustrated, hang up. My husband calls back and goes through the whole entrance exam again, asking for my phone number, account number, full name and address, and last 4 of my social. Every. Damn. Time. So he decides to go straight to the top and is connected with Kevin the Floor Manager. Kevin says the reschedule for a half a month away is all he can do but he'll contact customer service for us while we hold to try to bump it up. Unfortunately, he doesn't get through to anyone but says he'll get on t first thing in the morning and call us back between 8-9, our time. (Continued in next review) read more

Finally got to someone who set up our apt and said we qualified for service. Day before Apt get a call saying they don't service our area. I call back like they requested and was told they do not provide service to coralville, IA. I explained how every business in our building using them for phone and internet, so how is this possiable? Apparently the computer told them they didn't. And this was after they corrected our address twice. I requested to speak with someone else. The rep told me there was nothing he could do because we do not service our area. I said that the computer is wrong, And it is idiotic to tell people they qualify make them wait 2-3 weeks for install. A business has to run and it cuts down on our profits when we can't do that because we were consistently lied to and mislead. I explained how all people in our building use them for both phone and internet, so they need to check there records. They've got some kind of racket going where they try to sell you a modem for $100 and then charge you another $15/mo "protection" (where else have I heard of paying protection?) to make sure, y'know, like, nothin' bad *happens* to your service. I wanted to cancel the unneeded line, and spent two hours on the phone trying to get said line cancelled. Finally, after hours of "hot potatoe", got a number from a helpful young man, after speaking to nine others previously. Called this number, and was told I had a "verbal Contract" and to cancel would cost me a hundred dollars. No discussion, no reasoning. So much for customer loyalty. I feel like CenturyLink owes me stars. They do not deserve this lowest rating. I constantly get mailbox fillers for them but cannot get through to any customer service. I try to pay my bill. I get emails about my bill. But every time I try to pay, their website is down and it takes all sorts of automated phone calls to eventually get to a "service rep" just to get hung up on. Tried to go to their local office. It's closed down now. Not only can I not cancel my service but I can't even pay for the service I have been getting. I don't care if mediacom might have some outages. I would love to switch to a service I can actually contact instead of dealing with this BS. I was a customer of CenturyLink for 3 years and am giving them a low rating due to several unacceptable issues I ran into with them. Initially, we had agreed on a date to have Wi-Fi set up and no one ever showed up. When I contacted them about this they said there was no request ever put in so we had to wait another 3 weeks before they came. Their connection and speed is fine except they have outdated modems that didn't allow the signal to reach to parts of the house (this wasn't a very big house). The worst part came when I wanted to terminate my services when we were planning on moving. I was only in a contract with them for a year and after that was paying on a monthly basis ($80/mo. for 40 Mbps!). When I went to renegotiate the pricing, I told them that I did not know how long I would be living there and could not enter another annual contract. They offered me $10/mo. off so I accepted. It turns out this was their way of starting a new contract after I explicitly told them I could not enter another contract. When I cancelled the service they told me that this was a contract and requested an early termination fee of $80. All of this process was very frustrating and am glad to not be dealing with them anymore. read more

Finally, I tried to call, and the hold times are unreal, and the service is awful. It took 17 minutes to complete my business. They wouldn't waive the fee, and instead offered a bill credit for paying with a card over the phone. I have a long saga history of trying to combine two accounts with centurylink, and I just have to say one thing: RUN. Call up mediacom and ask about switch and save, even if you aren't a current centurylink customer. Not to mention, service is beyond bad at 9 p.m. We have to wait until 11 p.m. on my DSL service to get a clear video stream on netflix. read more

Very very bad service and technical support. I wish 0 can be given. Every time you call you have to wait 30 min at least. No recommended

I switched from Mediacom internet to century link and have been very pleased. No noticeable change in download speeds and even better, no slowing down in the evening hours when everybody is online like Mediacom. Price is better too. read more
