Compared to Ville Émart, That location is smaller and looks like more a bistro than a diner. It supposed to have capicole which is delicious as well, but I got food restrictions, can't eat it this time. Ordering is done on kiosks up front - the menu is somewhat limited, but they have several types of burgers which are able to be customized to your liking. I didn't want to get too big of a burger, so I went with the Patty Jr. and customized some of the sauces. The burger itself was good, albeit I'm glad I got the junior size as it was a little too greasy for my liking - it had that glazed doughnut look. We also got some poutine to share which was good but not the best I've had in the city. Service was fast, and overall I enjoyed my meal at Patty Slaps. Club sandwich kinds of diners in Montreal - 1 of 2…read more I found Restaurant Lafayette as a side effect of going to look for Troisieme Tasse coffeehouse about a block away from Metro Papineau. Troisieme Tasse's locale appeared to be empty and had leasing signs on its vitrines. As I walked back to the Metro realizing I needed to get coffee elsewhere, I saw Lafayette unobtrusively occupying a corner and almost directly across from the Metro station. I filed it away in my head to look it up and see what they had to offer. Lafayette checked out just fine on review sites, so I went in to eat lunch another day. As you walk in, it's a little long in the tooth, but that adds some character to Lafayette. It has the big booths and, as a bonus, its sitting on a corner allows it to have many booths next to windows. It looked like there was quite a bit to choose from, so it could have been that I was overwhelmed. That said, I settled on a club sandwich and a soft drink. I sure have eaten a lot of club sandwiches in the province of Quebec, with all of them being plentiful and satisfying. I've eaten them in Montreal, in Quebec City, and even smack in between the two in Trois-Rivieres. In fact, there used to be a place called Le Club Sandwich about a block or so west of Papineau for which the site, complete with the tacky building occupying it, has given way to gentrification. Lafayette has a good feel ... sort of like a worn and comfortable shoe. The service was also "comfortable," for lack of a better word, but not at all worn, or world weary. By this I mean that it was informal and good-natured, almost as if in a small town. The prices were in the ballpark for this genre and for having an in-town Montreal location close to the city center. The club sandwich was very good. I was very happy with that choice - almost always safe and almost always tasty and filling. Restaurant Lafayette has been around a long time and local folks as regulars is a good sign. I would eat here again and, with a location between Centre-Ville and the Jacques-Cartier Bridge and being so close to a Metro station, it would make it even more likely.
