Don't believe the high ratings you see on Zocdoc and HealthGrades: the Yelp ratings here are more indicative of the actual patient experience with Dr. Kaufman. The entire visit he was dismissive and rushed. He saw me for only 15 minutes and wasn't particularly interested in any of my questions. Old-school medicine mentality: "I'm the doctor, so I'm right". He conclusively decided I had a bacterial condition and prescribed me the "strongest antibiotic known to man", Levofloxacin. When I wrinkled my nose at the risk, he was dismissive, telling me "sometimes, you just need to trust your doctor" and that many of his patients took it and he never hears from them again, so it must work. When I got home and researched what he had prescribed, I found that Levofloxacin had a chance of serious nerve issues, had a black box warning from the FDA, and was not recommended unless a bacterial test had come back positive (which it didn't). I never took the antibiotics, and my pain ended up being a pelvic floor issue and resolved after seeing a pelvic floor physical therapist. The only saving grace is that the practice is inexpensive (With my United Healthcare rate, the visit was $135 including all lab tests). read more

I'm writing this on behalf of my girlfriend who was, and still is, severely traumatized by this a-hole "doctor". This happened years ago but the pain of the experience still haunts her. My partner went in because of a bladder issue. She was on the table, in stirrups, while this doctor kept going on and out of the room YELLING at his nurse to "hurry up and get her out of here". The nurse kept having to apologize for his behavior. He showed zero compassion, patience, or care. This guy is lucky that I didn't find out about my partner's horrid experience when we still lived in NYC because I would have paid him a visit. Maybe I should mention that my gf is black, so this could have been a reason for this guy to act the way he did. I'm sure he's great with white/Jewish patients. This doctor seems great, however his receptionist is not. I don't understand Dr. Kaufman this is your business and from the other Yelp reviews your only issue is your receptionist. Is it really worth it? I was running late to my appointment due to extensive subway delays. I left a message before the office opened to let the receptionist know that I was running late. Then I followed up after 9am to see whether it was ok to still come in 1/2 after my appointment time. Those calls where made 2 days ago and since then I have tried in vain to reach the office to no avail. She didn't even have the decency to return my message so I didn't risk continuing the trip to get turned away. Smh I will get my lab results eventually and that's it. I refuse to chase a Dr. that I am paying around. Way to much competition in NYC. I don't care how many magazines he is featured in. read more

I am a patient of Dr. Kaufman's because of a condition called interstitial cystitis (IC) which, if you haven't heard of it, don't feel bad because no one else has either. Lots of doctors haven't heard of it, in fact. For someone like me, the great news is that Dr. Kaufman has heard of it and he is fantastic at helping you understand what's going on and working with you to come up with a plan that works for your particular case. To make a long story short, interstitial cystitis is incredibly painful because it creates a situation where the acids in nearly every food that you eat burn the hell out of your bladder all day, every day. I came to Dr. Kaufman's office in tears after months of incredible daily pain and after having gone to all sorts of doctors (urologists/gynecologists included!) who told me I was making my pain up, that I should try pelvic exercises, and who put me on old lady bladder medications. I'd gotten fed up with the process and figured out that I might have IC by doing my own research and found, luckily, that Dr. Kaufman is one of the few IC specialists around and he was right here in NYC. Dr. Kaufman was incredibly understanding in testing me to make sure I had IC, which I did, and giving me options about how to move forward. He's easy to talk to, he listens to what I have to say and he understands that this condition sometimes makes me feel really defeated. If you're looking for a great doctor for lady problems and ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE IC, go to Dr. Kaufman - he can help you when you feel like no one else can. Also, don't be scared by comments about the receptionist. She's always been very nice to me. It's a normal busy doctor's office in New York and the phone rings a lot, but it's a perfectly friendly atmosphere and I've never had anything but good experiences. read more

The bottom line: he is very professional and caring. I read some review (maybe on Google) from a patient who said he was unprofessional/in-it-for-the-money type, but I absolutely disagree. I was not rushed, condescended to, nor made to feel like an inconvenience the way I tend to feel with doctors. Update: 6/21/2016- I am still a loyal patient to Dr. Kaufman. I went to him and we discussed how we have exhausted all non invasive treatments for IC and he is now taking an invasive approach. He is the only physician that has stood by me and listened, is always available by email and is willing to take treatments to the next level! He is encouraging and makes me feel like I am a priority! His manager Nancy always greets my by first name which I love, it shows that she remembers the patients and we are not just a number! He's the first physician I have taken the time to review because of his exemplary care! I had been suffering from sever IC pain for over a year and had seen multiple urologist with no relief until Dr. Kaufman. On my first visit with him I could feel his knowledge and empathy towards the pain I was experiencing. He took his time and listened to all of my complaints and made me feel as if for the first time I was being heard. I'm also able to email him when I am having a flare and he is quick to respond and treat the episode. Dr. Kaufman was the first urologist to make a plan detailed to my needs and I finally feel hope towards managing this horrible disease. His staff is also very friendly and accommodating. His medical assistant Is professional and knowledgeable and always makes sure I am smiling before I leave the office. I am recommending him to any person that needs a urologist! read more

When dealing with your man bits, you want a competent doctor's opinion and expertise. Dr. Kaufman gets one of my elusive 5 star ratings. - The office, while small, had a great digital check-in method and had a nice waterfall against the wall that was a nice touch. - The receptionist, while a bit harsh with some people (I think it IS a NY thing), was completely lovely with me. I think it helps that I was nice to her to begin with. It's amazing how that works. - Dr. Kaufman's investigation, analysis, and ability to break things down for me was greatly appreciated. Dr. David Kaufman Have been seeing Dr. Kaufman for years - actually decades - as he treated my father who i accompanied to appointments. There are not sufficient accolades i can ascribe to him. Highly competent, knowledgeable with a professional demeanor that is second to none. Not only is he available by email but he is prompt in his responses and they are substantive. In appointments he doesn't waste the patients time which some doctors do by taking phone calls, leaving the room, keeping you waiting for the appointment. Importantly, if issues arise with insurance companies, he's right there handling them. Yes 5 stars--would give 6 but doesn't exist! read more

Stay far away from Dr. David Kaufman. This arrogant and unprofessional physician makes promises during the initial consultation that he cannot possibly keep. Further, he uses language that is not appropriate within the context of a medical consultation ('dick,' for example) and, for someone who treats urological/sexual conditions in men, he is incredibly judgmental about sexual matters. In fact, the diagnosis was reached primarily through recourse to his moralizing stance. Without any kind of appropriate test and before even completing an examination, he concluded that I had an infection that absolutely, beyond a doubt, came from an unprotected oral sex encounter. I was told that I was now suffering the consequences of such an encounter. More judgment. He also conveyed that I shouldn't do these sorts of things, whatever that means. It is certainly not the place of a well-trained, competent physician to be guiding a patient about personal matters/sexual encounters/decisions about relationships. This kind of judgmental nonsense is not to be tolerated. I felt as if I was speaking with a member of the clergy. He also makes proclamations without a full patient history, which is naive. And he only communicates through email , refusing to take the time to call a patient back and have an actual conversation. The office staff rarely answers the phone, even to make an appointment. When Dr. Kaufman's initial pseudo-scientific suggestions do not work, he later contradicts himself and immediately suggests invasive procedures that he is not even equipped to provide (he just moved and is apparently still settling into the office). It is appalling that a physician who has been in practice this many years can behave in such a manner. Beware. He is not who he seems. Lots of false advertising on the website. read more

Arrogant, condescending, and rude. I genuinely question if he has early onset dementia. He never gave me a physical exam, missed appointments, and, most significant, was wrong about the dosage of my medication on more than one occasion. He was even wrong in the notes he'd taken, in both cases, insisting I was taking double what he prescribed. I had to check with the pharmacist to confirm I wasn't losing my mind. When I raised this concern, he defensively told me - this is an exact quote - he was "bending over backwards to accommodate [me]." How being present (physically, if not mentally) for a regularly scheduled appointment is "bending over backwards" escapes me. Like another reviewer wrote, he is completely unavailable for questions. No one should expect a doctor to be on call for you, but it isn't unreasonable to expect one to return emails or phone calls with questions about how to take your medication. When I told him I was unhappy about this, he told me that I was "pissing [him] off." Really??? Do yourself a favor - find another urologist! I did, and he's great : ) read more

Let me first get this out of the way, Dr. Kaufman was a fantastic doctor who explained things thoroughly and made me feel at ease when doing a checkup on me. He is great. However, I will never come back because of his receptionist. This appointment took place more than 8 months ago, though, so this could be moot. So I don't know what it is about new yorkers, but every time I try to make an appointment with a someone, receptionists become very defensive when they can't accommodate you an appointment within a few days, if not immediately. New Yorkers must all be in a hurry and really pissy at receptionists. Despite my totally un-hostile and forgiving nature on the phone to receptionists. The receptionist got all defensive "well the next one at that time is the following week!" she said all ready to fight me. I said that's fine very nicely and she responded as if she was surprised that was ok. So I do show up that day, 15 minutes before the appointed time, as she instructed as very important. The door is locked. I knock a few times. The doctor himself lets me into the door 15 minutes later. The receptionist isn't mad at me for showing up '15 minutes late' but I'm sure she probably is or could be for delaying the sign-in process. Despite the fact that she had the door LOCKED AND WOULDN'T ANSWER. So I come in with my paperwork done beforehand. She says it'll have to do (??) and says "i'm gonna go get a coffee, he's ready when you are, Dr. K" and leaves the office completely. A few minutes later, I hear the doctor say "show (my name) in, please." The receptionist isn't there, the other person in the waiting room looks at me curiously, and I shrug and just get up and look for wherever I guess the doctor might be. Later I'm supposed to have an appointment made by the receptionist for an x-ray. She says there's a facility on 77th and there's a place in this building, which do you want? I said I want this building, it's convenient. Okay, she'll call them up and set it up. The x-ray place calls me later in the day and says my appointment is set for the the facility on 77th street. Days later, the receptionist calls me, confused for some clerical error, and I don't understand a word she's saying. I just didn't want to deal with it. I was asked to come in for a follow up. I did not, because of the receptionist. Sorry, Dr. Kaufman, is a fine doctor but until that receptionist goes, I'll not come back nor recommend the service. edit: a response to the other reviewer. I don't think he read the part where I said I was ALSO was very nice with the receptionist. This isn't about being nice, if you read my review carefully, every single step of the way this receptionist messed up. We just told you that so you could be here to update your information." So we took a cab to be on time for that? An update of information that took all of 4 minutes? This also impacted the rest of the morning because of COURSE they were running late, and that subsequently impacted us getting to my husband's next appointment. The last time we were here we also had an extensive wait time. It is profoundly frustrating because, as a practitioner, we have no complaints but the balance of the experience has been aggravating at best. read more

My husband was scheduled for a 9 am appointment by Nancy at the office. He was there at 9 am waiting in the cold and the girl showed up at 9:20. When she came said that the doctor is an hour late! Why not call? Why not show up on time and take care of your patients and have common courtesy. The office is said to to open up at 9 am. Every day before the appointment I (called three days in a row) the phone doesn't get picked up until 9:20 am, 9:25 am. So it's a common thing for this office for everyone to always be late. These people have no respect for other's time. We will be going to see another doctor with better office staff that's more responsible. read more

I used Dr. Kaufman's services for a vasectomy only, so I can't comment on any other aspects of his urology practice. For this particular procedure I have absolutely no complaints. Dr. Kaufman and his staff were all a pleasure to work with. He was informative and funny during the office visits, I definitely felt at ease. The procedure itself was quick and painless, couldn't have lasted longer than 10 or 15 minutes. I took it easy for 2 or 3 days and aggressively iced the area. I did not experience any swelling or black and blue symptoms. No pain that couldn't be handled by OTC meds. And I also appreciated that the doctor was available and quickly responsive by email. At least for this procedure I would definitely recommend Dr. Kaufman. read more

My first visit to the doctor was great. During the visit the doctor was going to follow up with the treatment plan. Doctor failed to follow up as suggested during the visit for over a month. Emailed the office every week. Then there of a issue of non payment from the insurance. They charged me the entire amount ($500) when i tried to contact them to discuss options. Again no response after multiple attempts. Front end office is not concerned about patients, will not recommend this doctor. read more

Dr Kaufman is a knowledgeable doctor, but his unprofessional receptionist is enough to make me not return here. After several visits, I have seen Ms. Guzman rudely lose her temper with several patients and even told some of them to leave. She never answers the office phone, and when I got her on the line once, she promptly told me she was too busy to deal with anything right now and hung up without allowing me to speak at all. Having to go to a urologist is not a pleasant thing. You would think a doctor would hire a staff that is more compassionate and understanding. Even Dr Kaufman has not been the most caring, charging patients an office visit for picking up a prescription (less then 3 minutes there?) and acting too busy to talk about what is going on. I have a serious problem with recurrent UTIs, pain during sex, and just general urinary irritation and pelvic pain all the time. I got fed up and went to three doctors in a week, all who were supposed to be amazing. The first doctor was nice but couldn't give me a definitive diagnosis ("it might be IC, it might be pelvic floor dysfunction, there's no way to tell, we can just give you pain meds for the symptoms, yada yada"). The second doctor was board certified in both urology and gynecology and barely listened to my medical history, tunnel visioned the diagnoses and told me i had kidney stones even though they didn't show up on my ct urogram. She guilt-tripped me for having sex too young, prescribed me a course of antibiotics even though I expressed discomfort as I had just been on two courses of them, and rushed me out the door. Then I went to Dr. Kaufman. It was clear to me how busy he was, because he's a kickass doctor with a million certifications and awards, but he still took the time to listen to my entire medical history, every one of my complaints and symptoms in depth. He asked clarifying questions, and was not stuck in a tunnel-vision diagnosis mindset. He had a hunch about what it was but did a physical examination to make sure, and it turned out to be a different diagnosis than he had expected. This proves that he is thorough, detail oriented, and he doesn't just operate on "hunches." He doesn't cut corners. He was able to give me a specific, detailed diagnoses and a clear multifaceted treatment plan with referrals. And guess what? It wasn't IC OR kidney stones! it was something completely different! and all it took was a physical examination and some genuine listening to figure that out. If you have pelvic pain or urinary pain, go to Dr. Kaufman. Your search is over. read more

I had a very unpleasant time today at Dr. Kaufmann's office. I'm a PhD student, and was referred by my primary doctor to Central Park Urology. I called a day before my appointment at 4:00 pm to find out how much I was going to have to pay. The receptionist said "I can't give you that information, I'm going home now, but if you want that information come 30 minutes before your appointment." My appointment was scheduled for 12:30 pm. In the referral print out, they state clearly that you must call and ask how much it will be. So I followed the instructions, and as far as I know, the office is open from 9:00 to 5:00pm. Ok, I hanged up the phone and figured: if I don't need that information, I will get there by my scheduled time. I get there at 12:26PM. I come in and she asks: you are not Sandra, are you? I told you to come in at noon. Sorry lady, my appointment was at 12:30pm, my class ends at noon, and you told me "if you want to know how much you have to pay, come in earlier." Well, I have a disease called interstitial cystitis and I'm in a lot of pain, so I figured "this doctor seems to be good, I will pay whatever it costs me." I arrive, on time, and after being very disrespectful she says "sit down." I wait for ten minutes and she tell me "i'm going to have to reschedule you." I don't get it. I'm there on time and she tells me the doctor is too busy for me? I ask for an explanation and things start to get tense. She takes me to an empty room, closes the door and starts asking me in a very disrespectful way, why didn't I come at noon. I told her that, as I said on the phone, I had class until noon and that is why I as there at my scheduled time, 12:30pm. I get furious and tell her I need to talk to the doctor. She unlocks the door for me, I go back to the waiting room and two people gave me "thumbs up." Another patient approached me and told me" she is an arrogant b$.&, don't let her treat you like that." While I do not think it was necessary to use that language, I understand now why she called her a b$@$-! Doctor walks out and a patient told me: that's him! Talk to him! I approached him and ask: are you Dr. Kaufmman? and he says: yes, but I am busy now. I tell the woman, in Spanish, that she was wrong and she didn't have to act like this, and she tells me, in Spanish, to get the fuck out of the office. Yes, just like that. Offensive and arrogant.I cannot believe that they have someone so unprofessional in that front desk. Do not recommend this office at all. read more
