From the very first visit, he took my concerns seriously--even when I wasn't sure they were valid myself. He listened carefully, examined me thoroughly, and clearly cared about finding the root cause. He ordered the appropriate tests, explained everything in a way I could understand, and reassured me that we would figure things out together. Because he works with NYU Langone, I was able to get imaging scheduled very quickly. At every follow-up, he was thoughtful, thorough, and proactive, even personally helping me get an urgent neurosurgeon referral when it was necessary. Dr. Rosenthal doesn't like to explain nor listen to his patients much. After few visits, I was put on a maintenance mode and was asked to see him X amount of time per year, mainly for prescription meds. My condition never improved, again just maintained to not get worse, and there was never a thorough explanation of anything. read more

Dr Neil Rosenthal is the best diagnostician I know! I went to my internist with some unusual symptoms. He suggested I see a neurologist and recommended one to me. I gave this Dr my family history and told him what I thought it might be, due to the fact that my mom had had this particular disease, and I had symptoms that could easily fit into the parameters of that disease. After several visits and performing approximately 10-12 tests on me, his conclusion was...that I did not have the disease that was in my family...the disease I had feared I might have. He sent me on my way, saying that, yes, I did have the symptoms I had come to him with, but that my problem was not neurological. He suggested that I keep looking for an answer, but gave me no guidance as to where to look or who to go to, not even the type of specialty that might be the correct one to pursue. Fast forward two months. I, by chance, happened to be at a friend's house and Dr Neil Rosenthal was there as a guest, as well. During the course of the evening, our conversation turned to the symptoms I had been concerned about. I relayed the story about the other neurologist, above. Dr Rosenthal suggested that the symptoms I had, were compatible with the disease I had feared. He said he thought I had a good chance of having the same neurological disease that my mother had. He suggested that I might follow up with a comprehensive exam in his office, as well as having a test done that the first Dr never even suggested. Soon thereafter, I made an appointment for the suggested test, to be followed up with an exam and discussion of test results with Dr Rosenthal. Unfortunately, sure enough, I did have the disease I thought I had. The first Dr didn't pick it up, despite the fact that I told him my mom had had it, and my symptoms fit well within the parameters of this disease. Dr Rosenthal was able to confirm what was wrong with me, by the specialized test he ordered, and physical exam. Within a week after my correct diagnosis by Dr Rosenthal, I was moving out of state, so unfortunately I could not continue to be his patient. My new Dr, a neurologist, specializing in this disease, confirmed Dr Rosenthal's diagnosis. I would still be his patient, but the distance makes it impractical to continue seeing him. I think he is an amazing diagnostician, and would highly recommend him to anyone / everyone who may have neurological symptoms and not know what to do or how to proceed. Dr. Rosenthal literally saved my daughter's life. She had been feeling dizzy and had not gotten an explanation for her symptoms from her doctors. Dr. Rosenthal saw her on an emergency basis. He is a neurologist, but diagnosed her with life threatening anemia. She was admitted to the hospital for an emergency transfusion and recovered well. Dr. Rosenthal is an excellent diagnostician. He is personable and empathetic. He is the antidote to the corporate, soulless medicine that is increasingly being practiced in the USA. I can't recommend him highly enough. read more

Dr. Rosenthal saved my life! On what was routine office visit to look into neuropathy symptoms so as to get clearance for normal torn meniscus surgery on my left knee, he Detected a heart murmur! Despite listing my insurance as an accepted insurance, my ZocDoc appointment was cancelled and then I received a call claiming that they do not accept my insurance. When asking questions, it was clear that the receptionist wanted nothing to do with me. After the encounter, I reached out to my insurance to see what was going on. Turns out the receptionist falsely claimed that they are not a provider. My insurance attempted to reach out to their office in order to find out what the issue was and why I was being denied service. As a mature adult, the receptionist just ignored all calls from my insurance provider. After my insurance attempted to contact their office nearly a dozen times over the course of two days without success, I attempted to reach out to them to discuss the situation myself. It turns out they are ignoring my phone calls as well. Knowing that they are a provider, and given the fact that my referral was already approved for their services, I attempted to schedule a second appointment through ZocDoc. In the notes, I gave a detailed explanation of the situation and provided them with all of the necessary information to bill my insurance and contact them if there was a mistake (including referral reference number, provider reference #, etc.). I even offered to discuss the situation further via phone if that was necessary. The receptionist cancelled my appointment without explanation and didn't even bother to call me to further elucidate the situation. Needless to say, if you would like to be treated like a human being and know that your situation or issue matters, go elsewhere. read more

Although I think it would be great if doctors can tell you the short stuff over the phone instead of having you come in for another visit, another copay, and another $150 charge to my insurance to tell you 3 sentences. This guy told me I had a stroke and wasn't even very supportive about it. The worst part is that a subsequent second opinion confirmed that I did not in fact have a stroke and that my MRI was nothing to worry about. What a dangerous man! He wanted me to start on statins! read more

I have never been compelled to write a review like this in my entire life. But after reading the "not helpful" comments in the help section and seeing that someone else had an issue with his office assistant; I have no choice. My name is Connie Loren Walker. And I had a horrific and traumatic experience at this office. So horrible, that I left the office and didn't even have my appointment with this doctor and I was in extreme pain. My Appointment was yesterday at Wednesday August 26th @ 2:30 pm. I was driving and I got stuck in traffic. I was very close to the office. At 2:37pm I called the office to let them know I was going to be 10 minutes late, I was on 24th and 7th avenue and I was almost there. Something must of happened because we were blocked for a while. She didn't thank me for calling. Instead she started yelling at me over the phone that I was late, and that I missed my appointment and she said if I came she doesn't "know when I will be seen". As a first time patient I was shocked with her demeanor. I told her to save time, I did all the forms on line. As this was an office of Neurology. More than likely even if I was on time I would of be given a lot of paper work to fill with medical history and past medications. I wouldn't have been seen as I walked in, I know from past experience. When I got their at 3pm there was no one in the office besides me and her. No other patients. I was like you must be kidding? She then handed me a lot of forms that I already filled out via zoc doc and received confirmation via zoc doc that they had. My condition is endometriosis of the Sciatica which is rare and painful; so I made sure to fill that out via website. I even got my medical records to do so. She gave me the same forms to fill again and I tried to inform that I did it via zoc doc. She was rude. Didn't listen to me and told me "that's all that printed" and I told her it can't be, cause I spend quite a while doing it prior. I went to call zoc doc on my cell phone and she proceeded to come from around the office desk finally "I thought she was coming to help me" but instead she literally starts yelling at me while I am on the phone doing her job with zoc doc trying to send her my medical history. She pointed to a sign that said "no cell phone use" and I explained to her I was infact calling zoc doc to allow her to get my records. She refused to help me and told me to go outside with the call. Mind you, there was no one else in the waiting room, even the rep on the other end heard her and how she talked to me. So I had to go into the hallway with no air conditioning (it was in the 80's) and a massive giant steel fan that was blowing air which made it impossible to hear. After talking to the zoc doc rep who verified that I did fill out the forms and that someone indeed printed it from August 21st, she said if she would just call back they can walk her through it. When I came back into the office she wouldn't call zoc doc. She kept yelling at me that I was late and so fourth. Again. There were no other patients there. Towards the end finally I saw one other patient as I decided to leave. In front of this patient she was rude to me and was extremely nasty about me calling zoc doc to get my records. Infact, I needed her to speak to them. When someone makes an appt to see a neurologist that means that patient is in pain. Neurology is a serous practice. She should keep in mind that this is not a routine visit and offer compassion and understating. I was late. But she isn't the doctor. But yet the doctor was walking back and fourth and I am quite sure he heard her yelling as she stood by his door and yelled at me for calling zoc doc because she refused to; to access my complicated and detailed medical records. I handed back my clip board and told her I would not be seeing the doctor today, and let her know calmly that she was infact beyond rude. She was actually extremely traumatizing and she verbally assaulted me by yelling and and intimidation which was heard by the zoc doc rep on the phone was which documented by zoc doc who was on the phone with me. Since I left the office and wasted a day off from work where I came all the way from Long Island to the city, you think the doctor would reach out to me via email of phone message? He didn't. So he has to be fully aware. I am also plan on making a report to the board of medicine. I will be calling him today prior to doing so, to give his office assistant a chance to relay my feedback and speak to him. Also asking customers to write down on a paper form their entire credit card information full account number and expiration date and 3 code; is extremely dangerous and tacky. If you must keep customer cards on file for automatic billing of future appointments; this should be done electronically. Not on a handwritten form. I've never ever seen that in my life. Call the office now and see for yourself. read more

Dr. Rosenthal is an excellent doctor. He and his staff are very kind and accommodating and they make you feel at ease. I went into his office for headaches right before the holidays and he went out of his way to take care of me and get me all the tests I needed even though he was leaving for vacation. After being informed of an error, I would like to state that there is a reasonable fee for cancelling an appointment with less than 24 hours notice. It's 50 not 150 dollars. I am incredibly sorry for that error in understanding. The same review applies from before. Dr. Rosenthal is a wonderful practitioner with a great sense of humor who listens well to ones concerns and assuages them, provides treatment and follows up promptly with patients for any appointment aspect from returning a missed call and giving an exam result in understandable terms. I have been seeing Dr. Rosenthal for as long as I remember (maybe 10 years now?), and I have recommended him to anyone who suffers with migraines. He is helpful, inquisitive, responsive (I once had an emergency on the weekend in the summer -- he called me back quickly), and he is warm. He also is v empathetic to the nonsense that goes on w/ insurers. What I really like about the office is that it is very small. It's usually just Dr R and Nicole, who runs the front end. After years of going there, it feels very close-knit, and they know my history and I don't feel like I am getting bounced around/am anonymous like how I feel at other Dr's offices, where there are tons of docs and lots of receptionists. I would recommend arriving on time to your appt, as he is always booked, and you don't want to be behind in the queue! If you arrive on time, you will get seen on time. read more

Dr. Rosenthal is my most caring and attentive doctor. His goal is to get to the source of pain, etc as quickly and efficiently as possible. I have referred many people to Dr. Rosenthal over the years, with many different symptons (from carpal tunnel to nerve damage to other serious injuries). He isn't an alarmist, but makes sure that he listens and treats everyone with efficiency and sympathy and enables them to find the correct treatment quickly. He treated a friend of mine who had mild dementia (72 year old male), and stood up for him with his son and social worker. The latter two sent him to a nursing home (for the elderly) without any stimulation or effective treatment for the dementia. Their goal was not to treat his father for his comfort, but to qualify for Medicaid quickly. read more

I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Rosenthal but his office cancelled my appointment because I didn't get them my insurance information fast enough. I received a request at 8:30a on a Monday and by 9:30a they cancelled my appointment. Anyone who works Monday through Friday knows that Monday morning can be incredibly busy and so I didn't have time to send over my insurance information in the 1 hour time limit they gave me. If I could give this doctor no stars I would. I went to see this doctor as he was recommended by my primary care doctor and the first one I could get an appointment with. I had a constant headache for 2 1/2 weeks so thought I should see a neurologist. It is a small office and a one man show with his receptionist. He brings in specialists to do EEG, EKGs etc. I had an appoint for an EEG scheduled and was on my way, but unfortunately stuck in traffic. I got a call at 1:30 asking where I was. I explained to the receptionist that I was on my way and about 5-10 min. depending on traffic. She said, "Well your appointment is now and since you aren't here the specialist needs to leave so we can reschedule you. The next available is a month from now." I could not believe anyone would do business this way. Even restaurants in NYC give a 15 minute window! I then got charged for a "No show" fee. I showed up, but i was refused service. I also went for an MRI that was ordered and asked the technician for the CD of the scans. He said I wasn't allowed to have them as the Dr. doesn't like to give them away. That is unacceptable!!! My body = My scans. I told him i wasn't seeing that doctor anymore so I don't care what he instructed and I have every right to my medical records. HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED! read more

Agreed. Dr. Rosenthal is a wonderful neurologist. He's better than the book as my physician says. But, I did have an issue once with having my insurance company being billed twice. Was a pain for a little while but it did eventually get resolved. A good neurologist is hard to come by, and I recommend Dr. Rosenthal over any other I've seen in the area. read more

Dr. Rosenthal saved my life, after visiting 4 other highly regarded doctors he diagnosed and advised my other doctors to treat my cushings disease - very rare and hard to diagnose. As far as the comments regarding rude receptionists.. that's just crazy and silly, she is and was wonderful! Everyone is entitled to an "off day" and also - perhaps it was a temp? I am writing a second time to again say how Dr. Rosenthal's care and expertise has quite simply saved my life. I am a Registered Nurse, yet in early May could not figure out why I was experiencing numbness in my hands and feet. My first exam with Dr. Rosenthal was a more thorough exam than I have ever received. Not just the physical tests, he asks questions, observes how I am reacting. Long story short he diagnosed an extremely rarer form of a very rare syndrome. I was admitted to the great care of Beth Israel hospital. I see Dr. Rosenthal every two weeks to monitor my progress. My progress will be slow but steady, yet every time I leave his office I am in greater spirits than when I arrived. Dr. Rosenthal also works very hard to keep his patients wait time to a minimum. I went to see Dr. Rosenthal for chronic headaches and I wish I had stopped seeing him after my first appointment because I do not feel like he gave me good advice nor did he seem invested in my well-being. His bedside manner could definitely use some work and of the 5 or so appointments I had with him, I often found myself staring blankly into space as he typed notes on his computer without informing me of his opinion. He did not provide me with any alternative options when I expressed concern over the amount of prescription medication he wanted me to take. When I finally decided to switch neurologists, his office would not send over the results of the EEG exam I had taken at his office to the new doctor even though I had signed an authorization release form. read more

The rub here was about insurance and payment more than the care. The office assistant refused, until the doctor instructed her, to call my insurance company to verify MRIs and tests were 100% covered. It became such a hassle I fired him and hired a different doctor. I think he felt badly by the end of things but I lost faith in him for how his office manager handled it. read more

I went through a life changing experience. Thanks to Dr. Rosenthal I have lived a healthy active life since 2007. At that time, I was diagnosed by a top Orthopedic surgeon after reviewing an MRI on my neck. "If you don't have surgery in six weeks, you will have permanent damage to your right arm." The surgery would have dramatically altered my very active lifestyle. Bottom line, Dr. Rosenthal tookthe time and effort and bucked the traditional path and went with his gut (years of experience). He told me my excruciating pain was a result of highly unusual virus and I would get better on my own. It worked. A week has not gone by for three years that I don't think of Dr. Rosenthal and thank my lucky stars that I met him. Now for the gory details. One summer day, I began experiencing excruciating pain in my neck that caused extreme tingling and numbness down my right arm into in my right hand. I was sure it was my third bout of Lyme disease. A course of antibiotics didn't work. I went to a top Greenwich orthopedic doctor who sent me for a MRI which showed many herniated discs in my neck. His prescription to treat the pain and inflammation hadn't done much. At this time I couldn't type or brush my teeth. I then saw Dr. Rosenthal, who ran a battery of tests. He provided a stronger prescription that allowed me to function. He sent me to a surgeon in NYC for his opinion. Dr. Rosenthal was clearly thinking about my case. Something didn't make sense to him. In particular the nature of the herniation and which of my fingers was experiencing the most pain. After two visits and nearing week 6, he told me not to have the surgery. He concluded that I had a very rare virus. Sure enough after a couple of months I was better. 99 out of 100 doctors would have gone with the traditional approach. He took the time to gather information, ran tests, listened to me carefully, spoke to the surgeon and then came to his conclusion. I can't imagine all those yoga sessions, active vacations, wrestling matches with my kids and trips to the gym and tennis court that I wouldn't have had if it wasn't for Dr. Rosenthal.
