That's not a minor oversight; proper permitting is a California requirement for HVAC replacements and major installations, and it protects the homeowner, ensures inspections, and keeps insurance valid. It's in the mechanical code! Instead of being upfront or professional, they pushed ahead without following basic legal procedures. There are plenty of reputable HVAC companies on the Central Coast who actually follow code, take responsibility for their work, and don't cut corners. During the most recent heat wave, we discovered that our central AC unit was not blowing cold air and was tripping the electrical breaker. Rooms were approaching 86 degrees, and opening windows at night was not cutting it! On a Saturday morning, we called Jason, and he walked us through some basic troubleshooting steps over the phone. After determining that our compressor was dead, he took some information about what kind of AC unit we had and made some calls. He called back to inform us that it would cost almost as much to replace the compressor as the entire AC unit. Not only that, but no AC units were available anywhere locally during the peak of the summer! Jason thought "outside of the box" and was able to re-purpose a new AC unit fitting our specs ,that was waiting for installation at a different local business (who wouldn't need that unit for several more weeks). He and his colleague arrived an hour later. They removed the old AC unit, installed the new AC unit, and we were up and running about 2 hours later with our house cooling off quickly and quietly. He also gave us a small discount which we appreciated greatly, given the unplanned nature of the cost. We called Central Coast Heating & Air because our wall heater wasn't turning on and he came out same day, within just a few hours after calling, and checked out the heater. Unfortunately, parts aren't available and the heater needs to be replaced if it keeps acting up, but he did get the heat on today and we'll see how much longer we can get out of it until it has to be replaced. I was prepared to pay the service charge, but he insisted there was no charge because there was nothing he could do and he just stopped by between other jobs.. but he came out same day, told us what was going on, and what the solution was, which is all we could have asked for.
