I'm LOVING this new coworking space in Orlando!…read more First off- It's in Orlando's historic (and fabulous) Church Street Exchange Building. I swear, sometimes it feels like I'm walking down the stairs at the Gatsby Estate. Next, this space is geared towards tech start-ups and related fields. This means that everyone that's working alongside you is doing something creative and crazy cool. The networking alone on a daily basis is worth the membership fee! (Spoken like a non-techie...) The space itself is open-plan and reminds me of the Yelp headquarters in San Fran (or any tech hub in that city). Wide long tables allow you to work alongside new people or change your scenery and move over to the couches. They also have a shared kitchen with water, coffee, and even a few beer kegs for after-hour mingling! Probably one of the coolest features is the meeting space. Canvs has quite a few conference rooms of different sizes for large groups as well as small. Each room can be reserved for the day (for a very low fee compared to other meeting spaces) and you get to hold meetings in one of the coolest 'offices' in Orlando. Don't miss the bike rack wall! Making me feel like a total tool for driving, but also working with the SunRail tracks just outside the windows to serve as a not-so-subtle reminder that there are other transportation options in this town!! ~Yay!~ Drop in ($25 day pass) to check it out and soak in how cool this city is getting!!

My coworker and I recently did the free one day trial at Canvs, which also included a tour from…read moretheir amazing Shanika who was watching over the space on that day. We learned quite a bit about Canvs including the fact that they are a non-profit that runs off of the sponsoring companies you see posted on the wall when you walk in. They are one of the, if not the only, non-profit co-working spaces in Orlando. Personally, I want to say they are the best co-working space in Orlando! I can't speak as someone with a paid membership, but after having done the tour, learning about the benefits (coffee sponsored by Credo, free snacks, cereal, and occasionally, beer), learning about the type of companies and people there, the events that happen there, as well as their plans for the future, I really enjoyed being there. Once the tour was over, Shanika handed us our guest logins and we got to work. After speaking with one of their members, it's my understanding that if you can hook up to the ethernet, you should! Unfortunately for us, we left our thunderbolt ethernet connectors at the office and had to go with the wireless. Regardless, I had 0 hiccups accessing our file server or uploading documents. A speedtest on their wifi showed about a 26mbps download (mind you the large amount of other people who are also connected) which I think is good enough for what I was doing at the time. When I needed a break, I headed over to the kitchen to grab a cup of coffee and found their selection of creamers a nice addition. They offer actual coffee mugs and metal utensils for use there which I find is a nice touch. There is a "public" and a "private" fridge so that you can bring your own lunch and not have to worry about it getting eaten by someone. (We were told that nobody has ever had any issues with missing lunches either) I didn't grab any snacks but they had baskets of fruits, granola bars, and all other things there. When our work day was over, Shanika offered us and another member some beers and we chatted a bit about Canvs, shared some experiences, and then we headed upstairs to PowerDMS for the DowntownUX meetup! All-in-all, it's a great place to be if you're trying to get work done, or if you're looking to meet other people. You do NOT have to be a "techie" to be here. There are a lot of people from many different fields and everyone here seems to be friendly. If you've never been and are looking for a place to work for a day, I highly recommend making a stop by Canvs in the exchange building!

I visited for the first time on Wednesday to see Hamilton on its national tour. I won a show ticket…read more(through the Hamilton app) and was very excited to finally see my most anticipated musical. The show was amazing obviously!! I was lucky enough to win a front row ticket, so I saw it all as close as possible. The dancing, the singing, all the little details Lin Manuel Miranda inserted into this production is astounding. I laughed, I cried, I clapped, and I cried some more when the 2.5 hour show ended. I did not want to leave the theater. I cannot wait to see Hamilton again one day. As for the theater, this was my first time visiting the Dr Phillips Center and I was in awe. First, Dr Phillips Center is in the middle of Downtown Orlando and there are many great options parking wise close to the theater. I chose to park in the City Commons garage. There was an attendant in front where you pull your ticket to park - $19 with a card or $10 cash. The City Commons garage also connects to a covered walkway that leads you to the theater, just get off on the 3rd floor of the garage. The walk in total is about 6-7 minutes (lol). The theater itself features a large lawn in front, then valet is in front of the doors, then when you walk in, you get the full ambience. It's beautiful in there, so nice and shiny. The box office is immediately to your right as you walk in. There are concession stands on both sides of the building and the merch area was to the right side of the building. The actual theater is huge! Very comfy seats. It was pretty cold inside, so bring a sweater. Again, with the theater being in Downtown Orlando, there is plenty nearby whether it be a bar or sit down restaurant. Several restaurants are within a 10 minute walk. I will be visiting the Dr Phillips Center for a show again in the future, a great time was had.

Dr. Phillips Center is an absolutely lovely venue. We had the opportunity of attending a Hamilton…read moreperformance, and it was an enjoyable experience. The entire cast was exceptional, displaying radiant energy and talent. The Dr. Phillips team greeted us, scanned our tickets, and directed us to our seats. The center is well-equipped with bars offering beverages (alcoholic and nonalcoholic $$) and snacks on every level and restrooms conveniently located throughout. You can prepay parking, or there is street parking available if you get there early and don't mind a short walk. Taking pictures is not allowed throughout the performance so be mindful. See you at the next show!

In a year that has been so difficult, for so many, thankful to the Salvation Army Orlando for again…read morebringing Angel Tree! This event gives community members the opportunity to give back by adopting a child or even a Senior, providing gifts specific to the Angel Tree tag selected, and each person behind that tag will enjoy a gift at Christmas. The Salvation Army, while faith-based at its roots, does not discriminate when it comes to helping the community. ALL people, across ALL beliefs and every demographic, are the people they serve. Angel Tree is only one of the MANY great things this charity provides aid. More recently, Tuesdays during this pandemic, have been food distribution days, and people in need of food, drive to the main location, where boxes of fresh food are loaded into each person's vehicle. Another thing Salvation Army does to support the community is disaster response. During and following a disaster, the Salvation Army has mobile command center and feeding vehicles, which people impacted can enjoy a warm meal and also receive supplies/necessities. Again, ALL in need are WELCOME and no one is ever turned away. The 'Red Kettle' campaign is what most people think of with Salvation Army, and while that may be where their roots began, the Salvation Army is so much more than that now. Feel good about contributing and helping Salvation Army, and when they say 'Doing the Most Good,' know that is absolutely TRUE.

Those gifts are then grouped together and assigned a number. Families are given a time and day to pick up their gifts. One can volunteer for a 4 hour shift where they will be introduced to a member of the family and given a sheet directing you to their gifts. You and a partner will then pick up their gifts, help the family member select a stocking or teddy bear and then help them to their car with the gifts. This volunteer event is very well organized, and the people are so grateful for the gifts. I highly recommend giving this volunteer opportunity a try. I believe this event only occurs in December each year. ***Please note*** The location of this event moves around so please check with the Salvation Army before you go.
