I call Jose several days a week to ask him questions about plant diseases and every imaginable question about plants and he always has the answer. Centenos Nursery has good prices and sells to the public provided you buy a minimum which is usually easy. Not everyone in the office is very friendly but they have a good selection of common plants and trees. Prices are almost half of what you pay at home depot. read more

This is an impressive if not daunting wholesale nursery that occupies two entire blocks along the south side of the 91 freeway. It's important to take some of the previous low ratings (presumably from homeowners) with a grain of salt. As a wholesale landscaping nursery, it's designed for the trade...people already knowledgeable about plants who know what they want and come ready to order. Since the selection is so vast, you'll need someone to guide you, but to get respect, you'll need to do your homework first. As a previous reviewer noted, "they won't design your yard for you." My wife picked up a verigated agave and some kangaroo paws last weekend. I went back to look for succulents yesterday. They seemed to have a few at the front, but I wasn't very impressed with their health. They do seem to cultivate many of their plants on site. Here's what I noticed from a moving car: - Hydrangias - Verigated Agave - Kangaroo Paws - Bouganvilia (lots, in a greenhouse) - Banana Palms - Lots of taller trees The focus here seems to be landscaping plants. The worst f'ing customer service ever! We have purchased thousands of dollars worth of plants from this nursery!!!!!! In fact, we have referred many of our friends to them as well! Never again! Let me explain. I pulled into their dirt parking area where there were only two cars and in the furthest area of the lot. I proceeded into the office and began to ask a question when the lady (Owner Maria) received a phone call. It was a call to tell me to move my car "straight". I said I'm sorry no problem, and went back out and moved my car "straight." I again approached the office and then was rudely approached by Maria and again told I had parked it in the wrong direction for the second time! Keep in mind there was a ton of space and plenty of room for others to park. Unfortunately, I was completely caught off guard by such a trivial situation and decided to take my business elsewhere! A friend recommended this nursery so I checked it out. The owner answered questions wasn't at all helpful. Agree with other reviewers that you need to know what you want but prices are low. I left feeling underwhelmed and drove over to the former C-Stars Nursery off Western Ave. It was now Centeno's, as well. I've had a terrible experience with Centenos. For the past year+ I've been paying them to come to my house to tend to my yard, which includes a number of roses and a few trees. They did a terrible job, examples include: - installed a new sprinkler that didn't work - per the above, many roses and flowers were dying due to no water - never corrected several sprinkler heads that point in the wrong direction - often moved furniture without moving it back - came inconsistently and quality of work was poor - roses and plants are full of cobwebs and not cut back I would definitely recommend taking your business elsewhere. They did not take accountability for my yard despite raising prices on me before I finally cancelled the service. read more

Stay away! Rude, unprofessional owner. Their website says they're open M-F until 4:30, got there at 3:55 on a Monday and they wouldn't let us in. Claimed they were closed and when I tried telling them their website says otherwise the owner got mad and irrational and went on to say he had been robbed at gunpoint several times before and wouldn't open the gate! Very strange.... this is a nursery not a jewelry store so didn't quite understand why he just couldn't ask us to come back....politely! Turned out to be blessing in disguise after all, ended up driving a mile away to Kobata Nursery where they were extremely courteous and helpful, even though they closed at 4 they still welcomed us. I wanted to like them but after a third rude encounter in a row, I don't care if they have free plants, they are rude rude RUDE!!! I would not go here! Go to California Nurseries or anywhere else for that matter, they are way more helpful and nice on the phone and the plants are nicely taken care of. I signed up for yelp to right this review but I felt like I had to warn people to stay clear and at least try and vent due to the horrible experience. Just to be clear, here is what happened. Last week I called at 3:45 pm and the guy answered the phone "hello" which I thought was strange. I asked if this was Centenos and he said this is my personal number and the store is closed, don't call after hours. I tried to say " this is the number on your webpage but he rudely hung up. Why would you turn a business line into a personal line after hours and rudely yell at a customer to not call after hours when it was only 15 minutes after closing and frankly I thought they would be open at 3:45 in the afternoon! I was told later by our Gardner that he is always rude and to avoid him and only talk to Maria. So I called her over the weekend to see if they had 4 different plants I was looking for. She said fax the list. I mentioned I don't have a fax so she said email the list. I tried to get her to just let me know over the phone as it was only 4 plants and she said no just email it, very rude as well. So I did email it over with my contact and the fact that I wanted to come get them if they had them so I could get them in this weekend. No one emailed or called me back. I called back several times throughout the day and finally got Maria again and she said that her email had not been working for a few days. I then asked her "why would you tell me to email a list if you knew your email did not work. So I asked her if she could just take my list over the phone. She responded in anger saying that "it's not my fault my email does not work , which is why I said to fax it!" I told her I don't have a fax and asked again if she could get the list from me over the phone. She then hung up. I called back, but mostly due to being upset that she hung up and to my surprise the guy picked up the phone and in Spanish started yelling at me. I'm not sure what he was saying, but it was a very upsetting experience. As far as I'm concerned they are the worst business on the planet and I would not like my yard if it had their plants!! I would give them zero stars if possible. Place is terrible. Maria is a mentally challenged. I don't think she has an IQ over 10 or a very complete comprehension of the English language. I am a 20+ year licensed GC. I hand delivered a landscape plan to Maria for an estimate of the cost and delivery. She seemed confused from the start as if she had never looked at a landscape plan or a planting schedule before. She said she would email me the proposal. Two days pass and I call her. "Oh yeah. I remember you" she said. "Can you call me back around lunch to remind me to send you the pricing"? I am reminding you now!!! Never heard from her again.. If I could, I would rank them a ZERO! I went in to pay for my plants that my landscaper ordered for me. I was completely ignored. Maria sat on the phone as I waited. Then I proceeded to ask questions until she was rudely interrupted by someone else & then got on the phone while I was asking questions like I was not there. I cancelled my order!! I bought 2 15 gallon avocado trees here, a bacon and stewart. they did not last for more than a year.. They both completely defoliated and died. idk what the problem was i dont think they kept the best care of their trees here. read more

My first time going to this nursery. I needed 18 of the yellow wave flax. Their flaxes are located at their western & artesia location. When I arrived, workers were busy unloading plants, they block the small pathways so you cannot get through & they do NOT like to stop what they are doing to answer questions or help customers. After 15 min of walking around, I get one of them to point me to the right direction. I hand picked the fullest largest flax I can find. When I begin planting, I notice white furry creatures in between the leaves. By that time they were closed so I call them back the next morning, I spoke to the owner of the store (a male) who told me to return the plant & they would give me a full refund. When I got down to the nursery, the manager for the western, location, got very angry & refused to take back his plague infested plants! I quickly got on the phone with the office, that had just told me to return them & spoke to Maria. She began arguing & assured me that they have never sold any plants with plague. Since I was still in the location I went back there & began snapping pictures. She still insisted that their plants have no plague & gave me a message from the owner saying, "if any plants really do have plague, that is my problem & I will take care of it" I doubt they have done anything about it. Long story short, I did not get my refund, I was out almost 300$ & was forced to keep their plague infested plants. they are rude & cannot understand English correctly so there can be a lot of confusion with employees & managers especially that Maria lady. Skip this place there are many nurseries in the area with much better prices. read more

I came in with a list of plants from LA DWP, & Maria was able to knock a chunk off my list. One plant couldn't be found anywhere, but she had it!! Maria was knowledgeable, efficient, friendly and helpful. I know she went the extra mile for me & I appreciate it. There is a $30 minimum purchase, and you'll want to check the hours (get there well before closing time). I've been looking for a Bamboo Palm for the past week and couldn't not find one anywhere. Not only did Centenos have them but they had a wide selection to choose from. The guy who helped me out was named Valentine and was very helpful and went the extra mile to find me the perfect Palm. The lady at the front desk was very nice over the phone and in person. I have am an average home owner who has been going to Centenos periodically over the past ten years at the recommendation of our Landscape Architect. Centenos Nursery is cheap and they are expansive. It is not a Home Depot or your neighborhood nursery that has extra staff on the floor to help. Be organized, bring your list to Maria in the office, & smile. Knowing Spanish will definitely help if you drive up and down the rows in search of your items. I do not know Spanish and I have had people help me every time. Jose is my favorite! I have had two lovely conversations with Centenos and recently he offered me fruit from his own yard to sample to better know what I was ordering. Delightful. If someone called me on my personal number despite the number have been made public by accident....I would hang up abruptly too! read more

I was informed about this place by a friend for its great whole sale price. Well that might be true. But after giving them a whole list of plant, I was told that i will be called back with a couple of hrs with a total cost. No one called. I had to call 3-4 times over a week's time, and every time i was told by Maria to call her back in couple of hrs time or the next day. I finally had to back the 2nd time to get my list back, and during my 2nd visit- i was given a quote. They didn't have some plants , But that can happen. the price was reasonable. Centenos is truly a WHOLESALE nursery so don't expect any or much help making selections BUT if you know what you are doing or take along someone who knows plants you will find that you can save a bundle. We are there so often that we know the owner pretty well and SHE is great but not very helpful because that isn't the kind of place this is. If you need help, go to a retail gardening center. If you want to save lots of money come here. We can load up the entire back of my SUV for a little over $100. Every time we are at Centenos we meet people from all over Southern California--including the valley and Orange County--so the word is out! I gave it 4 stars b/c they are not a "service" oriented nursery. read more

Asd some have said here the owner "Maria" is extremely rude ands unprofessional, and her staff is the same and knows little to no English. None of the plants are marked with prices so you go, select your plants, and she is the final decision maker as to what the plants will cost (depending if she likes you or not). Most of her customer base is Mexican landscapers, so if you are a white suburbanite with lots of questions, this place is not for you. She will not help, and is one of the most unprofessional business people I have ever seen. It's too bad because she has a nice selection of plants. I must be getting senioritis. That's the only reason I can think of why I returned for a second visit. On my first visit, Maria--the only one who seemed to communicate in English--yelled at me for pulling the pots out of the ground. They were needing repotting and roots were growing out of the drain holes and into the ground. How else was I to purchase the plant if I didn't lift them up? Ask for help? Good Luck with that! On this LAST and FINAL visit, I set out some plants that I picked out on the side while I browsed some more. When I went to retrieve them, they were gone! I checked with Maria if she knew what happened to them, she said they were put back since they only sell the gallon size plants there. There were no signs that indicate that; besides, I was able to purchase the other sizes on my previous visit. And wow, she saw me looking puzzled while locating my stash and she didn't bother to say a word until I asked! WTH!!!! Was looking for a mandarin orange tree. The nursery had a daunting array of citrus and mandarins and we found exactly what we wanted at a great price. The staff helped us pick the perfect variety, giving samples of the different fruit to us and our toddler. We are coming back for more fruit trees and landscaping plants. Very helpful. I've been meaning to go to this place for a while since it was recommended to me by my friend. I fell in love! They have a large variety of drought tolerant plants and succulents and everything is lined up neatly. You do have to help yourself, but considering how much cheaper this place is to retail nurseries it is well worth it! I can't wait to go back! read more

We were referred by a contractor to use centanos for our landscaping needs. What a waste of money that was. A year later, all of the grass they installed has died. After having several other landscapers assess our property, they all say we should have never put grass in our backyard because there is not enough sunlight. Centenos never told us this, and to make matters worse when we started noticing problems they were very difficult to get a hold of and never came back to help us when we expressed that we were having difficulty.
