I was introduced to Yamada by a kind gentleman I met at Lowe's while my mom and I were shopping for orchid bark and care supplies. He overheard our conversation and kindly advised us that regular mulch bark wouldn't work for orchids, recommending us to go to Yamada Lawn Care in Gardena. I'm so glad we followed his advice, or we would have ended up using the wrong products,yikes! When we visited Yamada, Kenny was incredibly patient and helpful. He took the time to recommend exactly what we needed. They helped Hubs with his edge trimmer, because he was having problems and couldn't remove the...doohickey. The customer service here is an absolute disgrace! Apparently it's a family business. This may have been a great business when the parents or grandparents were running it, but now the entitled offspring who inherited it act like they really don't want to work there, and as a result they're absolutely useless and outright RUDE. From the receptionist who answers the phone, who's always exasperated every time you ask her a question. To the men and women on the floor, who will actually YELL at you if you dare ask for a product that's in their warehouse and not out in the storefront yet. Some people really do not deserve to own a business. These jerks got so lucky inheriting what was a good business, but they categorically do not deserve it. My dad's been a regular here for many many years. It's a small mom and pop's garden supply shop that carries just about everything you need to tend to your personal yard. Some prices are a bit higher, as they probably can't compete with the major garden/hardware shops that buy in bulk and has several chain stores. They sell quality products and hard to find specialty items here, geared towards the botanical advocates. This is where my dad goes to for his gardening tools and supplies for his private business and where I gather some plant vits for emergency revivals. I've been in here a few times and noticed how neat and organized they keep their products. The staff members are very knowledgeable, friendly, and even funny. My dad pulled a "I'm short a few bucks" on me and they called him out on it. =P I love my dad!! We stopped by the other day and noticed they're selling Cymbidium Orchids from Hartfield Nursery this Saturday, March 8th from 10am to 1pm. Other dates are posted in case you can't make it. They also providing potting demos during select times and dates for only $5!! Yamada Co has a small parking lot of a few parking spots. Your best bet is finding parking on the street, which there are plenty open spots. It's a small shop so it's probably best to call in to find out if they carry a particular item you're looking for. read more

Extensive inventory of products that are high quality and actually work. The staff are all experts that have worked here for 25+ years. They have all of the power tools as well and will set you straight on what is needed. I called a local orchid store to price orchid bark....they wanted twenty dollars for one bag! I was looking for large plastic pots for container gardening and none of the big boxes carry them. Thanks to Yelp, I went to Yamada and it is one of these shops the pros frequent and they carry lots of unique gardening products you can't find at big boxes. The shop owners are nice and knowledgeable. Plus their prices on soil are really good! Street parking in front on the side street and they carry the bags of soil all the way to your car and load it for you! A gem of a local gardening store. Wish they carry plants. read more

Many family members keep telling me how great this place is. I went here to pick up some orchid bark, orchid fertilizer and potting soil. An older gentleman patiently helped me and answered all my newbie questions. I appreciate all of his experienced advice. Even though there were other customers waiting, I felt like I was the only one in the store that mattered. What great service! Out of courtesy to the others, I kept my questions to the important ones and was happily on my way. Even the customers were patient and very nice. It seems like they have a longstanding, loyal following. To me, that speaks volumes as to why they've had the longevity with this kind of customer base.
