It's a beautiful sunny day in the mid 70s, smack dab in the middle of Missouri, and we made a stop…read moreat Buc-ee's off I-44 between Rolla and Springfield. Fuel was $3.11 per gallon here, and just four miles down the road it jumps to $3.49 per gallon. That alone makes this place worth pulling into. At this interchange, Buc-ee's paid for roundabouts on both sides, which is highly efficient. It's a brilliant idea and enables smooth traffic flow everywhere. This Buc-ee's has been here for about three years according to Brisket Bill, and it already feels like a staple stop. I stood there watching them chop fresh brisket and almost went with the Big Buckin' Brisket Sandwich XXL... but it was just two buckin' much for me. This is a nine dollar sandwich and worth every penny! It is outstanding! I did hear employees mumbling something about brisket on something. Maybe they were just bored and wanted to chop brisket. Maybe that's what they were saying. Since they already have a brisket Bill here in Springfield, Missouri, maybe I can be Brisket Bill in Huber Heights, Ohio! what's a 90 minute commute anyways? Soo many items. We picked up some beef jerky, fudge, candies cashews, some key chains, a brisket and cheese burrito, Taffy, gum, some other things and of course, gas. The washroom is pretty cool. Large! Store is clean, fully stocked and staff is very nice.

Kitchen cooking…read morebreakfast sammiches to order with as much spice as you want, and even at 2am they were still their nice snarky selves. Now the breakfast side has been nerfed into a bizarro-world Dunkin Donuts, only the drinks are made with the wrong mix levels and the inventory of hot breakfasts are incredibly lifeless, with no taste, much less spice at all...wrapped around some listless employees who might be obvious nepotism hires who got five stars for their indifference and lack of short term memory. Sounds like a death-knell, right? Not exactly. The place still has good workers on the retail store side and the homegrown chicken joint is still the original one for now, and their product is always selling out the door at this still-well-used fuel-n-food location. Add a star and a half if breakfast was no interest for you here, and remove the same if that's all you came here for aside from the fuel. You've been warned.

Having said that - the store had clean but small restrooms, the attached restaurant was packed at lunch time, so I assume it is good, and an ecletic collection of stuff to buy, including a broad selection of Missouri wines and Route 66 souvenirs. Note: Stuckeys has purchased some candy making capacity and is actually making it's own products as opposed to outsourcing the production which it had for several decades.
