The St. Paul is like your high mileage premium sedan -- it's well constructed with suitable prestige but maybe without some of the modern amenities. It's no longer the premium solution around but it's solid, dependable, a bit old-school, and maybe the best overall value. In short, I prefer it. Excellent service throughout the hotel from the door person to the front desk to restaurant to housekeeping. Friendly and efficient. Food quite good, especially for a hotel, but without an extravagant markup. So what's holding it back? - not many power outlets in room, only one at desk and one on bedside - WiFi is slow in some rooms - bathroom is small with older fixtures and not much lighting - bar isn't open after Wild games, except on weekends The St Paul is an excellent choice when staying in the area. As Arnold says, I'll be back.

So much character with this place! It used to be a convent, and the hotel kept with this theme. But as much as the building is older, the rooms are quite modern and well kept up. Being a conversion, there are quite a few quirks in the rooms, but I think it adds to the experience. They don't have their own parking, but there is a garage next door and others in easy parking distance. Now there are a number of homeless people in the area, but I still felt safe walking to the Xcel center at night and to my car in the morning. Considering how many people I drove past in the morning, I think you're going to have that at any of the downtown hotels. Oh, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention the breakfast - they had the usual sausage, potato, and egg options that you see at most hotels with free hot breakfast. But what most hotels don't have is the beautiful space this was served in. Great way to start the day!

A very historical hotel that used to be a covenant(I might be mistaken). It certainly is very unique with many old decors and furnitures. I however did not have a good time because amenities in the hotel were simply too old and some didn't function well. For example, the weather was very hot and humid, but the AC in my room was a very old stand-alone model and didn't keep the room cool and dry all night. The gym was very small with very limited numbers of equipment and the AC in there also wasn't working too well, which made my workout pretty painful. The hall way also had a subtle old scent that I didn't enjoy. I am sure some people would really enjoy this hotel for its aesthetic.

I love this place. As you walk into the old building you feel as if you are back in time. You are then greeted by a bar that is fully stocked with libations. To the right, there are some private booth areas. The hotel is said to have a haunted room and you can hear about it if you do the haunted tour. The service is second to none. Pro tip.. if in the patio area do not sit at the table all the way next to the fountain. There is a pidgin way above the fountain in the 1st window and the pidgins make it rain with .

Celeste of St. Paul is a beautifully restored historic convent turned boutique hotel. The original woodwork, elegant furnishings, and spotless suites create a luxury stay full of character. My room overlooked a historic church with bell chimes that made the atmosphere unforgettable. Staff were professional and warm--one of the best boutique hotels I've experienced.

Whoa. As someone who didn't grow up in a church, I have a unique fascination for Celeste St. Paul Hotel. One of my coworkers told me about the history, and it was a fun stay overall. Beautiful aesthetic and comfortable hotel room. Downsides were stiff towels, weird smells, and lack of soundproofing. I did enjoy the complimentary breakfast buffet both mornings I was there. Service was very "heads down modest" but maybe that's just more MN culture. Would stay here again and actually make time to enjoy a few drinks at the bar next time!

We had an opportunity to check this place out as family was staying here and we pre-drank at the bar prior to our dinner reservations. Very fun to know that this was a nunnery back in the day and now they offer drinks and rooms. The specialty drinks were very flavorful, however it took a very long time to get service at first even though it was a very small bar area. We tried the Adam's Apple, which was Apple Cider & Bourbon Punch and the Revival, which was Tramantino Limoncello, Tattersall Crème de Fleur, Owen's Ginger Beer. I would definitely order both again. The hotel rooms were nice, but smaller.

This little hidden GEM was perfect! I needed a night - Celeste was perfect! Beautiful Nunnery turned into a boutique Hotel. I will start off by saying this place is beautiful and the room we stayed in was nothing less then perfect! Minus I wish the Frig would of been stocked. That being said the bar was quaint and a nice cocktail, wine list. Wish there would of been more than 4 items to nibble on. Bartender was friendly. That being said the women checking us in was not. Which completely sets the tone for the stay- which would of been a complete turn off, but I needed rest. The bed was cloud like comfortable, and the shower nice as well. The view was breathtaking! What made all of this complete was checking out I had a brief moment to chat with the Manager and his name escapes me, however he was very hospitable, friendly and kind. Thank you!

Found this place while looking for a night stay downtown. Very cool old building and great bar. Our room was good, very comfortable bed and good breakfast in the old chapel. Great check in process and our young bartender was very personable. Recommend for something different from a typical hotel stay.

This is an incredible building. The architecture, the history, and the energy are incredible. It has a delicious breakfast made by Ms. Sheila. She was very professional and kind. There were always eggs, sausage and potatoes. On the weekend there were biscuits and gravy. The cinnamon rolls were also on point. I especially enjoyed the fancy coffee machine for my morning americano. The bar area is a fantastic spot for meeting locals and guests at the hotel. The drinks are well made and have witty names. The front desk staff, Kyle, was very helpful and accommodating. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

It could've been great if the check-in experience were different. My husband and I decided to go on a little road trip, we live near the Chicagoland area. I used the Hotels app and this was a top suggestion. Such a cute little hidden place. We needed a night and this was a very good choice! Well... the check-in was a bit rocky. I didn't catch his name but the front desk person was a bit too "Minnesota Nice," (sarcasm). My husband and I had about a seven-hour drive, so we were very tired. The front desk guy instead of greeting me in a more welcoming manner said "uh you look lost." A F T E R the front desk guy saw my husband and I carry our bags he decided it was a good idea to say "oops, I could've been nicer and tell you there is a side door." Why even say anything at the point. So I decided to reply with "oh this will be helpful for my Yelp review." This was followed by his stupid comment "Yelp is for yellers." WARNING!!!!!- There will be an Alexa in your suite!! My husband and I felt really creeped out by it so we decided to unplug. Talk about graceful hospitality. The beautifully-proportioned 350-square foot Garden King delights with a sumptuous king-sized bed, Ultra-HD TV, workstation desk, and spacious bath. We learned it was a nunnery and it was turned into this beautiful hotel. I will start off by saying this place is beautiful and the room we stayed in was nothing less than perfect. The bedroom was very comfortable the bed was amazing!! What truly made it a good experience was the following morning. The reservation had breakfast included. WOW! The options they offer are GREAT! It makes it really hard to pick. The morning chef asked if everything was good. He was sooo polite, I'm so mad at myself for not catching his name. Thanks to him, our experience was much better! Definitely will be an option next time we are around the area. Self-park is available metered on the street or the World Trade Center parking ramp. The ramp can be accessed on Cedar Street or Wabasha Street. Ramp parking is a max of $18 for a 24-hour period. Apart from event rates.

Although I haven't stayed at The Celeste or eaten in the bar/lounge, I was able to go on a tour of the hotel. Having worked in the building in the mid-1990s when the Minnesota Composers Forum had an office there, it was a trip down memory lane going through this restored and renovated hotel. What once used to be a convent that had close to 100 nuns, this historic property has undergone many changes since it was built. What I enjoyed seeing was the many historic and original elements still a part of the hotel. The antiques, beautiful restored paintings, and chandeliers all created a majestic and welcoming, upscale entrance and lobby. The rooms are impeccably designed and decorated; and the windows block out the noise from the streets. Throughout the entire time we were touring the hotel we did not hear any street noise. The views - depending on which room you are in - were impressive with the State Capitol in clear view from one section of the hotel. The bridal suite is lovely with 18-foot ceilings and indications that it used to be part of the altar. The eating area for breakfast was once a chapel and it was a joy to see the beautiful stained glass windows still in place. Parking is available in a nearby lot within easy walking distance (about a half a block). Otherwise, the light rail is close by for those not using a car. The Celeste is an elegant hotel with rooms that are simple yet beautiful. If there is ever a need to stay downtown St. Paul, I would definitely want to stay here!

The hotel is beautiful and the lobby was even more dazzling as it was decorated for the holidays. The rooms were pretty standard in decor but even the "basic" rooms are larger than many I've been in. There was a desk for me to get some work done and a chair if I had guests. With a lot of extra room between the bed and TV, just in case you want to do some yoga. A few of my colleagues got suites and they were 2 rooms with many sitting areas and a couch. The bed is very soft and not my favorite, but still good. There were plenty of blankets and pillows as well. I will say heating and cooling the room had a bit of a learning curve. It was pretty cool outside when I visited but inside the room was mid 60s. I like it at around 70 so the heater would heat then go off then go back on not long after. So if you visit in the cooler months, and are like me I suggest mid 70s for the thermostat. All had the standard TV and books about the area. It also had a snack bar, drinks in a small frig and a mini mini mini frig for me to put food in. The frig find those side sandwiches sized to go containers so keep that in mind. And like many hotels, the mini bar is no cheap so if you don't want to be tempted you may want to get some snacks. For sound, I will say you can hear the street and the park had some music playing so that could be heard. On the flip side, I was right next to the elevators and couldn't hear them at all. The location was not far from the airport, 30 minute drive, but there isn't a lot of parking if you're renting a car. It is close to many areas like restaurants, the hockey rink, coffee shops, offices. Most places are either a 15 to 20 minute walk or even shorter drive. I had my choice of restaurants while there. While I wouldn't advise walking, like I did, the Capitol building and Summit Hill were close to see when there is a bit of free time. All in all, it was a lovely stay and should I be back will be my first choice.

The room was quiet and had decent views of Rice Park. I 'm not sure that I'd stay here again.

PROS: Central Location: Nicely situated right in downtown St. Paul. Easy access to restaurants, parks, and local attractions. Cookie Bonus: Who doesn't love a warm cookie at check-in? A small touch that makes a big first impression. Parking Made Easy: The attached parking garage is incredibly convenient. The hotel validates your stay, and the system recognizes your license plate for seamless in/out access. No fussing with tickets or room keys. Spacious Room Layout: Stayed in a standard King room, which was generously sized with a partial wall separating the sleeping area from a cozy sitting area (two chairs, a table, and a desk). Pool Access: The indoor pool was a decent size--not too deep (max 5 ft), which made it great for kids or casual swimming. On-Site Mini Market: There's a secure, key-accessible snack shop in the lobby, which is super handy for late-night cravings. Friendly Staff (Mostly): Front desk and housekeeping were courteous and accommodating. Nice Event Spaces: Saw a wedding setup during our stay and the banquet hall looked lovely and well-decorated. CONS: Noise Issues: Room doors SLAM shut like thunder, and the walls are paper thin. We heard every door closing, pipes creaking, and hallway footsteps like they were in our room. Tiny Bathroom: Barely enough room to get in and out of the shower without hitting the bathroom door. Extremely cramped layout. Weak Water Pressure: Shower pressure was poor and the water never got more than lukewarm. Accessibility Concerns in Pool Area: No steps or easy access--only metal ladders to get in and out. Not ideal for small kids or anyone with mobility concerns. Dusty Corners: The room was mostly clean but clearly not thoroughly dusted. The divider between the bed and sitting area had thick dust clumps that fell when bumped. No Price Transparency in Snack Shop: None of the items were priced, and it was sticker shock at checkout--$5 to $7 for a soda or candy bar is just absurd. Mixed Staff Vibes: While most were friendly, a couple of the male staff members were noticeably standoffish and made us feel like we were bothering them with basic questions. Overall Verdict: If you're looking for a centrally located hotel with decent amenities and don't mind a bit of noise, this could work for a short stay. But between the thin walls, tiny bathroom, and overpriced snacks, I'd consider other nearby options next time--unless they start charging by decibel level, in which case I want a refund.
