Check out our boarding onto the ferry to go to Vieques! The scenery is pretty cool, the ride was nice, and the workers were helpful. It was super easy, just keep in mind that residents take priority.

We were able to get tickets in person by arriving 1.5 hours before departure. Bathroom is clean! There's a couple of vending machines for snacks. There's also a small cafe inside with sandwiches and chips for purchase. The signs and waiting seats are all clean and modern. We were moved to a shaded area an hour before our departure. Thirty minutes before departure, we boarded the ferry. The ferry itself is spacious and super clean. Everyone has to remain inside. The ride was fun as we went over some waves. I would have liked to breathe the sea air and stand outside but recognize for safety reasons and non-recreational reasons, we were not permitted. $2 per person one way + $1 per carry-on.

Let me tell you the imp tip first- Book a ticket in advance, especially on weekends, it's only $2.25 pp, so even if you have to cancel-no big deal, and reach there early. most of the time, you won't face any issue but few people have faced issues with " not leaving on time-waiting time- canceling due to weather and more". The thing is you won't find an easy answer in these situations -so hope for the best Ceiba's ferry terminal is located on the premises of the former Roosevelt Roads Naval Station on the east coast of the island, earlier it was in Fajardo but now shifted to Ceiba it is 50 minutes ride to Culebra island but while coming back, they boarded us on a cargo ferry which took almost 95 minutes and when we reached Ceiba (we had Airbnb in Fajardo), we could not find any open restaurant - so plan thing in advance. Priority is given to locals and elders then tourists, for boarding the ferry. The ride was not smooth, waves can be pretty rough so be prepared for that. basic amenities are there like washrooms. Parking: We had rented a car from San Juan, and we parked that at the Ceiba ferry terminal. It's a 5-7 min walk but it's a pain in the summertime, though the Shuttle is there to take you to the terminal. The parking fee is $10 as of March-2022. Pack some food, there are not many options in Culebra and nothing at Ceiba terminal.

The ferry system is currently undergoing a transition. Staring last year, HMS Ferries and the PR Maritime Transportation Authority began a partnership to mange and operate the ferries with the goal for HMS Ferries to assume full ownership of Puerto Rico Ferry. Traveling by ferry to Culebra and Vieques is notoriously in efficient, as can be read in the reviews. Despite it being cheap, I began paying extra to fly to avoid the hassles. Hopefully things will improve. On Sunday I took a day trip to Culebra with a group. I immediately noticed an improvement. Last time I was here, the parking situation was a mess. People were even parking on the side of the street. That was not the case this time. You can't do that. The parking lot is past the terminal (I posted a photo of the rates). You are instructed to place the ticket on the dashboard. There is a shuttle that can take you to the terminal. You can walk if you like as the distance is not that far. The shuttle is for passengers with light luggage. If you have lots of carry-on stuff you can drop them off at the terminal and then park. The main issue is tickets. You can purchase them at puertoricoferry.com or the City Experiences Ferry App. Note they only sell a limited amount on these platforms. The bulk is sod at the terminal. This means if you are on the website or app and it says sold out, it doesn't necessarily mean the ferry is sold out. It just means the limit of online tickets was reached. You then have to buy the tickets in person at the terminal. Arrive early and hope for the best, hope the ferry really isn't sold out. I believe you can only buy 5 tickets at a time. Also, be aware you have to pay for your carry on items (I posted a photo of those rates). Unfortunately, this process can be very stressful and off-putting, which is a shame because Culebra and Vieques are worth visiting. Luckily, I didn't have to experience this (this time). Somebody from the group purchased the tickets. Our ferry was scheduled to leave at 8a. We had no issues boarding. The ferry left on time and the crew was professional. The return trip went equally smooth. Again, we already had the return tickets. If you don't or can't purchase a return ticket, you will have to do so at the Vieques or Culebra terminals. Overall, this experience was pleasant. Granted, I didn't purchase the tickets which is the most stressful part of the process. I plan on using the ferry more often because of the price. I still prefer flying because it is faster and more convenient, but more expensive. And I I want to visit the islands more the ferry is the best bet. Hopefully the future experience are closer to this one. Time will tell if this transition will work out for the better.

Service is hit or miss. I took the ferry to Culebra on Sunday and I can say this time it was a hit. Parking was a breeze. The parking lot is very spacious. The shuttle was running efficiently. When we checked in at the terminal everything was smooth. They scanned our tickets and we went straight to the boat. There were no delays whatsoever. On the way back everything ran smoothly also. I can't complain. There are some portable restrooms at the terminal and one by the ferry. I didn't notice if there was food available at the terminal.

I was pleasantly surprised by the efficiency and cleanliness throughout this entire experience. There is ample parking, the waiting area is well organized, the ferry was on time and the staff is friendly and readily available to assist you. I highly recommend to book your tickets in advance online since the tickets sell out fast.

Lizbeth H.

MAKE SURE YOU GET THERE IN TIME!! i cannot stress this enough to arrive early, because even though online ticketing may say they're sold out, at the window they always sell more tickets to either Culebra or Vieques.

I'm writing this review to tell people everything no one ever told me. You're able to buy tickets online for a little bit more expensive than you can get at the kiosk. I highly recommend getting there early to ensure that you get a space on the ferry. I bought tickets for a ferry on Monday and drove over an hour to get to Ceiba from San Juan but they turned me away at the gate stating that the captain said the conditions were too dangerous to travel to Culebra They refunded the tickets I bought online but I would have appreciated an email saving me the 1.5 hour drive. They reopened the ferry on Wednesday but I was not able to make it there until Thursday... the day of my return flight. Thank God I got there early and was able to get a space on the 9 AM ferry to culebra and got the return ferry at 1 pm. the ferry itself takes about 45-50 minutes. If you get motion sick, I highly recommend sitting on the deck rather than inside. Overall very worth it to see Flamenco Beach and Culebra

What happens when you put idiots in charge of a ferry? Come here to find out. I came for a simple boat ride to Culebra, arrived 15 minutes before my boat scheduled time at 11am, and sat in the section marked for Culebras passengers. At 11:05am a passenger from the Viequas section came and said "Hey the Culebras boat just left from the Viequas side. No-one came and told anyone that the Culebras boat arrived and was departing! The idiotic Ceiba security guards who were just hanging around chatting to themselves didn't have the thought in their mind to tell passengers the boat arrived! After walking around to multiple people we finally got to a supervisor and all they did was allow us to exchange the tickets for the next boat 3 hours later. No apologies, no nothing. Just a bunch of idiots running a port and not caring about the customers that keep the tourist revenue flowing into the country. This was a horrible experience with an incompetent staff and operation. Do your best to avoid this place or risk your vacation plans getting ruined!

Smooth ride out to Culebra. Not a lot of seating so the tickets go quick. There is a shuttle from the parking to the ferry.

We arrived on time and we were warmly greeted by the captain and 2 crew. After a basic safety briefing we charted out towards Culebra in overcast weather. Instead of Culebra we settled on the uninhabited beach of Caya Luis Pena before Culebra with crystal clear waters in about 20 minutes. The waters were translucent clear turquoise and beach sand was pristine. Water temp was around 79-80F. Weather was overcast and comfortably cool. They laid out a simple light sandwich buffet for lunch with beers and tropical cocktails. Snorkeling, swimming and relaxing for a few hours, we spotted small schools of fish and a very cool bachelor Stingray circling looking for scraps. Crew was incredibly friendly and helpful and everyone enjoyed the short beach visit. The return trip was much smoother and after jumping back on the bus we were able to stop by a bbq joint for coconuts and fried stuffed empanadas.

Not only did they neglect to inform tick holders, they canceled every ferry ride for the entire day...even the ones scheduled well before 2pm. Our ferry was scheduled for 7:30 and if not for our taxi driver canceling our ride to the ferry terminal at 5:30am, we would not have known. My fiance and I ended up spending $120 booking last minute flights so that we wouldn't be stranded. Terrible customer service. Unethical business practices as well as we received no refund for our ticket. The ferry company used the protest as an excuse to force tourists to spend more money on the local economy, by making them pay for flights. Absolutely disgusting. Vieques is beautiful. It is a fairly priced experience that includes good food, drinks, and is ultimately a great day not at the office. The positives are all over the reviews. My picture is from the charter even. Let's talk about what happened to detract from our experience. Captain Dan drank openly and had at least two Medalla cans of beers on the way back into port. This is unacceptable on a paid charter. Really big deal. I'm not sure what the laws are on this but my pilot, Cab driver, bus driver, doctor, and anyone else responsible for the well being of others can wait to drink after hours. Captain Dan started the charter with a quick argument with Charlie. He used the explicit and profane language quite loudly without apologies. The first stop was supposed to be 150 minutes but was only 70 minutes including the meal; so no beach time. The whole charter ended at 3:30 which was an hour short. The snorkel mask had a poor seal which allowed water into the mask. No legit snorkel vests also. The stops were really choppy. This was not snorkeling for a beginner. I can't imagine anyone doing these stops with no experience. There were strong currents near big rocks. The ladder on back was challenging with as much bobbing as the ship did on stop 2. I can imagine older folks having a really hard time. He can't control water but can pick stops accordingly. The commentary was really poor. We learned about the boat, his business plans, and his thoughts on politicians. Information on sailing, the ecology, the reef, or even the history of Puerto Rico wasn't there. I can't tell you the name of the islands, boats, currents, or anything like that. No sailing chart was shown. I can tell that Four Seasons and Disney are interested in investing in the West coast and some things about the US Treasury. The bathroom sink has not worked since at least a month. He made an announcement about it. I was able to glean this from a few TripAdvisor references. So food prep and guest hand washing happens in the same sink. Get the folks some hand sanitizer. They do a great job on prepping for motion sickness because it will be a ride against the currents with some choppy waters. I'm surprised I didn't get it. I had a good time because I was on vacation and on a boat with great weather. Charlie was great, too. The marina was amazing and there was even a shower facility. I wouldn't go back, though.

We stopped to admire a ship that is going to be used in the next Pirates of the Caribbean movie before heading out to the open water. Ingrid and Dan were more than accommodating. They even let a few who wanted to sail the boat take the helm. One was a born natural. We got to our main snorkel site where we were told we would have about 1.5 - 2 hours to enjoy the water before lunch would be ready. For those of us who had not snorkeled before, he took his time to explain how to put on the mask and how to use the snorkel. He made sure we were all outfitted with the appropriate size flippers as well. He made sure we all had swim buddies and told us what kind of sea life we'd see in the area. The lunch they provided was amazing and plentiful. (I LOVED the mango salsa). Drinks were plenty (water, soda, beer, and RUM PUNCH!) Ingrid also brought out some fruits and banana bread for snacks later in the day. We were given the option of what we'd like to do next, more sailing or more snorkeling. We ended up on a little sand island with even more clear water. The day just kept getting better and better. When we got back to the marina, Ingrid called our driver to pick us up, and provided us a key to the shower to get rinsed off. All 6 of us girls had a great time. I look forward to going back to Puerto Rico and taking on a new adventure. This is much more exciting and relaxing than one of those over priced catamaran tour boats.
