Things to Know: No Cover. Largely Male Clientele though their lady friends do frequently tag along…read more Sometimes there are a lot of ladies who love ladies in the establishment and other times you are banging your fist down on the bar and yelling "Where are all the freaking lesbians!" - Seriously, ladies of Baton Rouge, where are you all hanging out???? Anywho, prices are o.k. I won't say they are ridiculously cheap but not overpriced, I guess decent, hell, $6 for a shot of Maker's is pretty good I suppose. They DO have Karaoke but just on Wednesdays and Thursdays I've been told. Typical TV's that blare loud music - check. Stage for Drag Shows - check that (I finger snapped as I said this in my head). There's also a pool table, a cigarette machine, and a snack machine (well I am pretty sure there's a snack machine). There are male bartenders and looks like they have a female bartender as well - though it wouldn't hurt for management to hire another (Do ya'll hear me!). This place is SMOKY which was great for me when I smoked - not so pleasant now that I've stopped smoking. Bar closes down at 2pm, but this is Baton Rouge, which is lame, so all bars close at 2pm....Oh yes, this is a dive bar so no need to be all fancy, anything goes and anything appears to be appreciated. Sure hoped that helped.

I had a very upsetting experience at Mother's Lounge during pub quiz night…read more I am autistic. I arrived late, did not have a team, and was standing alone in the corner trying to be unobtrusive. There was a small stage with a folding table where the quiz host was asking questions. Between questions, music would play while people wrote down answers, and I was singing along quietly. Staff told me to move away from the stage, and I did. Then they told me I was not allowed to sing along with the songs between questions and called it disruptive. The situation escalated from there. The context matters. This was a bar that does karaoke regularly, and there was already a loud song playing between quiz questions while people were writing down answers. I was singing along to music that was already in the room, not trying to interrupt the quiz or perform over anyone. I also stood as far away from the quiz participants as I could without going outside, and when I sang louder than softly, I turned toward the wall/corner because I was trying not to project into the room. Maybe the sound carried more than I realized, but my intention and my behavior were not careless or hostile. When I became visibly upset, they threatened to call the police if I did not leave immediately. I said I needed five minutes to gather myself and my belongings. They refused and told me I had to leave right then or they would call the cops. That is when I raised my voice. I understand venues have rules. But there is a big difference between enforcing rules and escalating an overwhelmed disabled customer who is trying to comply. This was humiliating and frightening, and I hope ownership takes disability awareness and de-escalation seriously.

The bartenders were young, and the only business we saw consisted of drunk women who looked like they made a wrong turn off Bourbon Street. 8PM may have been too early to expect a congregation of social sisters.. No Espresso Martinis to be found here, so we went with our standby, the $12 Tequila Sunrises (Photo 5). They were satisfying enough. Not much interaction with the bartenders who preferred socializing with each other. Ah, youth. We'll give it another try the next time we're in Nawlins, but The Golden Lantern was a friendlier spot. Whenever I pass by there are always locals sitting at a table outside chatting it up - even early in the morning. I was in town for Southern Decadence and decided to finally check it out. I was surprised by how spacious it is inside. There is even an upstairs area with a bar (Queens Head Pub) and balcony views. Downstairs there is a pool table, gambling machines, and plenty of room to dance. The bartender was very friendly. I asked if they had a signature drink and he told me that The Separator has been a favorite for over 20 years. I decided to try it. It was a boozy milkshake that made me feel like a kid again. I can see why they call it The Separator because if you drink enough of it, you'll get separated from your friends. LOL! I came back later that evening and the place was buzzin' with a fun & lively crew. I enjoyed the music and was happy I stopped by.
