Happy 2024! What better way to ring in a new year than to make some reasonable, attainable, measurable resolutions! For example, visiting more local dives to inspect the vibes and overhear the diatribes. And what better way to adhere to this goal than by writing reviews of these experiences myself, and not using DeepAI. Yesiree. Cedar Room was nearby the movie theatre my pookie and I were going to later in the day over the NYE weekend, and neither of us could remember if we had been in here sober before. Verdict was, we are pretty sure we had not. I've driven by so many times and wanted to. I'm so glad it turned out to be so cool. The decor looks like it hasn't changed in decades, and why fix what is not broken? Exactly. Is it open or not? Well, bars rarely close around here. One way to find out, pull on a big wooden door. I really like when these places are dark inside, too. It reminds me of Europe. That's what happens when there are no windows. You really can't thumb your nose up at $4.50 drinks and $4 shots. Not that we did shots, but I did see the sign proudly advertising such activities. We liked our bartender and the regulars did not seem unfriendly at all. Engrossed in their own convos, sure. But I felt like I could probably join if I felt like it. I did not feel like it. There were a couple nice TVs with college football on. I did partake of the bathroom and the report is that she is clean and fresh smelling. Not sure if the popcorn is still around or if it is cash only. We paid in cash. There is a sink kitchenette in the back of the room, which added to the ambiance we enjoy. I also like that there are no windows, did I mention that? I did. Okay. A+ would recommend, will come again for cheap, stiff drinks, vibe check passed and all. Nothing better than a heavy-handed pour at $4.50. The bartender Kam, when I ask her to make me a margarita, she simply tells me that she can't make it. I'm a paying customer. This isn't the first time she told me no on making me a margarita. As a bartender, your supposed to make the customer's what that ask for. I think it's obnoxious and wrong for a bartender to tell you no that they are tired of making margaritas for customer's. It's their job to make the customer's happy. She doesn't deserve to be a bartender at ceder room anymore. She should be fired. Small divey neighborhood hangout that's been around forever. I drop by on a regular basis because I have friends who drop by on a regular basis. It's not really in my part of town... but for me it's an easy "drop by on the way from A to B" kind of place due to it's location. I've seen three or four different bartenders during various shifts - all seemed friendly and had a generous pour. That, combined with reasonable prices and a friendly vibe make this a decent place to hang out for a bit and meet someone new. Downsides are they don't have a kitchen, but there are food places nearby (including pizza right next door). As far as things to occupy your time (other than talking, drinking, nibbling on popcorn and watching TV)... dice is probably the biggest/best thing going here. read more

The Cedar Room is a small, dark and musty neighborhood dive bar full of older regulars. They serve no food but do offer free stale popcorn. The drinks were cheap and the bartender had a heavy pour. He was nice and even came over to our table to take our drink order when he saw were empty. There is a jukebox playing music and it was a WIDE range of music. I mean it went from Tupac, to Keith Urban to Sade and then Eric Clapton's Cocaine. When the jukebox stopped playing the bartender would come over and put money in it and tell us to pick what we wanted. So no gripes about service. All the other reviews about the regulars trying to pick up chicks is true and the reason we ended up leaving. I came with my husband and my friend. My friend struck up a conversation with a man about Led Zeppelin and when they finished she went to the restroom. The man went back to his group of friends and proceeded to tell them how he was going fu*k her that night. The look of disgust on my face turned to horror as I seen my husbands face and knew we needed to leave immediately because he was fuming and I'd much rather spend money on other things than bailing my hubby out of jail. So in all, the bar isn't bad it's the creepy, douche regulars that kill it. read more

I came here because it was a neighborhood dive bar with a suspiciously high rating on Yelp. Being a dive bar junkie, I had to give it a shot. I've been here three times, all on weekends. Honestly, it didn't live up to its 4.5 star hype. Maaaaaybe 4 stars, but I far prefer The Stockman in Old Fair Oaks when it comes to dives in that neck o' the woods. The vibe I got from the crowd is what put me off. A friend of mine had a gun pulled on him when he looked through somebody's (a mobster's?) CD case without asking for permission. My boyfriend also senses the hostility and feels like he's going to get into a fight every time he's here. I don't get super-friendly vibes either, probably because there are a ton of alcoholics that frequent this place and by the time I get there they've already ventured into belligerent territory. I've heard that the crowd tends to be a bit older (more forty-something) before 10. After that it's fine for the 21-35 crowd. Beware if you're female, as there are a few creeps that stick around after 10 in order to seduce helpless, intoxicated young women. I almost retched when I saw a fifty-year-old man grinding with a girl who bordered on jailbait. That ain't right, yo. True, this isn't unusual to see at a dive bar, but seriously, have you no shame?! Even at dives you can find a classier clientele than that of the Cedar Room. The bartender Derek is nice and will make your drinks just the way you like them. He also taught me how to play Liar's Dice, which was entertaining. However, since I am an economical drunk, I wasn't happy enough with the potency of the drinks for the price. $8 for a somewhat weak vodka tonic in a highball glass. Perhaps I should have instructed Derek to pour nothing but alcohol in mine? Some other pluses include an internet jukebox, which has a great selection and requires you to take a music quiz when selecting songs. That was fun. On the other hand, it's pricey enough that I wouldn't pay for it myself. $1 per song, I think? Don't quote me on that -- my memory of that night is a little foggy. A more significant pull is the free popcorn. This would be awesome in theory, but every time I've been they've only had cold, burnt entrails (and I didn't want to risk burning the place down figuring out how to make more), so I haven't had a positive popcorn experience yet. The atmosphere is alright but not inspiring. There's some cool lighting and dollar bills taped on the ceiling. Other than that it's your typical dive, small and trashy. It gets pretty crowded during peak drinking hours. It's nearby so I'd probably go back, but I wasn't wowed by it at all. Important note: they only accept cash, and the ATM there charges you a ridiculous fee, so come prepared. read more

FYI though the closest interstate exit is Madison and 80. The cops do like to hang out there. Be careful after a night at the cedar. Its where I got my first (and hopefully last) DUI. The Madison/80 exit is a hotspot for the popo. I have not been back since but I still have fond affection for it read more

Like most dive/corner/neighborhood bars the regulars are always a bit wary around newcomers..it took the wife and I about a dozen visits until they warmed up, which does not bother us as we are not your friendliest couple in the world anyway. Now where can I go? Carmichael sucks ass. It's an okay dive for being in Carmichael. There are so many alcoholics around here it's not even funny. Most things in Carmichael were built in the 1950s and 60s so it's not hard to find a trashy dive.
