View from the balcony at the clubhouse. Notice the houses atop hills along the course: familiar sight during the round

Friends, this is a revisionist review, but one that offers praise for this Alamo Trail golf course. I last played Cedar a few times about 12 years ago. I had not returned for one particular reason: the dread six hour round of golf! At the time, some of the holes were cart path only, and the course almost required hiking boots to trudge up and down the severe elevation changes on some of the holes. And in addition, this course seemed to attract the most inexperienced golfers, inconsiderate golfers, given their skill level and lack of attention to pace of play. Well, here is the very good news. Those holes needlessly requiring cart path only, no longer suffer this ridiculous course rule. And for our particular date of play, we finished in under four hours. And now about the course proper. I had noticed on previous reviews the rather unfriendly staff working the counter and the course. This just wasn't our experience. I think the Alamo Trail must now impress upon staff the very important notion of customer service. We play Trail courses frequently, and the rule is welcoming, polite and friendly staff universally. Kudos to management! The Alamo Trail offers a variety of golfing experiences, from courses nestled tightly within housing development, some pretty low end housing, some within moderate housing, and some within a bit more upscale development. The most southern courses feel more like south Texas environment, with mostly black dirt and mesquite ( Mission del Lago e.g.), to the radically different hill country feel with rocky ledges and oak (e.g. Cedar) to more park like environ with larger, majestic trees lining the 100 year old fairways (e.g. Brackenridge Golf), to courses with history and majestic tree lined fairways, but also with more open layout design (e.g. Riverside). (As an aside, given the differing characters of the mentioned courses, my favorites are Brackenridge, Cedar and Riverside.) When I first played Cedar, development around the course was just underway. And while houses now line most of the course, the layout is such that houses are AWAY from the errant shot, houses mostly positioned at significant elevation from the course. The view of some of these homes can be pretty impressive. But the true character of the course lies in the elevation changes, and the very hill country character of the ledges, ravines, trees and flora lining the fairways. The course offers dog legs, significant elevation changes to some greens, just a couple of forced carries on some tee shots, and bunkering that does come into play threatening the unwisely played tee and approach shots. The course was in very good condition, considering the drought we have suffered this summer, with very few areas of hard pan turf. The bunkers are well maintained, with sugary, fine sand within. But friends, the very real challenge of this course is found within the confines of the greens: undulating, sloping and breaking greens that are unlike any on the Alamo Trail. These greens reminded me of the links greens that I played in Scotland. Three putting can definitely become nightmarish on this course. The timely tip: try to place irons as close to the flag as possible! Another challenge: the Bermuda rough. The day of our play, the rough along the fairways and around the greens was significant, so come prepared to muscle irons and chips to intended target. Weak, decelerating strokes will spell dyspepsia...trust me, as I speak from experience here! Other issues of concern to the intrepid golfer: carts are equipped with range finders, and on our day of play (Thursday), cart refreshments passed our foursome several times. So, final impression: definitely a must play in the Alamo city. The course can be challenging, but IMHO, is a fair test of skill. A very big shout out to the staff and course workers for their efforts on Cedar. Our foursome will definitely return. Hit 'em straight Yelpers, but not too many times during your round! Enjoy!!

I'm a big fan of the Alamo City Golf Trail in general. With so many different courses to choose from within the city at an affordable price (especially if you're a member), there's always a fresh challenge to choose from. I would consider Cedar Creek to be the crown jewel of them all. Brack has history, Olmos was nicely refreshed, but Cedar Creek has a private country club feel to it. The facilities are nice and the course is nestled in the hill country offering pretty views and challenging fairways. I want to say it's one of the rare times on the ACGT I've seen people out in beverage carts! When it's 102 out that Gatorade on wheels is everything. Only thing knocking it from 5 stars are the carts. The carts across the whole trail are pretty bad and Cedar Creek is exception there.

Quick update! Yet another rude staff review. Recommended to my parents that they stop by on a slow day to enjoy the course. Though my dad doesn't play much these days he enjoy taking a ride around courses when possible. He has been playing decades and knows the etiquette of the course. They called Cedar Creek IN ADVANCE and were told there would be no problem for them to jump on and enjoy an evening on the course later in the day. Upon arrival they were shut down rudely by Matt Iwanicki. My folks stated he was not just rude but condescending, dismissive, and even a bit aggressive. My Dad even went on to say he felt belittled and saddened from his interaction with Mr. Iwanicki. No apologies for making my parents drive all the way over there for nothing. No apologies for being told they could get on. No attempt to offer another way to get them on the course. Never a fan of egomaniacs that work in pro shops. Will be taking this to all the way to Alamo City Golf Trail. The negative reviews about this courses service and Mr. Iwanicki are plentiful and that's ridiculous. We come here to relax and not to be treated poorly. I understand everyone is dealing with life but that's no excuse for treating people with this way. This needs to change.

    Maintaining the course.

This is a rather unique golf course. It is long and narrow, and vey uniquely shaped. There's kind of a triangle at one point. You will also go through a tunnel, under a road, to complete the course. During wet periods it will look green and lush (not as common), but during dry periods (more common), it will look completely different (more typical Texan terrain and a bit arid.). But the scenery is worth seeing and the changing elevations will make you either love it or hate it. If you are looking for a unique golf course give it try, but know it's not a championship type course.

Injured fox on hole 14. Called club house four times. Mike stated the superintendent came out and it was dead. I have video of the fox crying in pain. Supposedly water was more important than this little guy. Terrible management!!!

Every other part of this review is a full-on warning about the new management company, Bluebonnet Events, and how their mismanagement, poor communication, and disregard for agreements ruined our wedding day. When our original venue canceled with less than six months to go, The Gardens felt like a blessing--it was stunning, close by, and run by kind, professional people who truly cared. We worked with Vickie, who was everything a bride could hope for: responsive, flexible, and understanding. She helped us stay within budget and even got approval from the owner to use our own caterer and self-serve setup, which we had already paid for elsewhere. Everything was perfect--until three weeks before our wedding, when I received an unexpected email from Amanda at Bluebonnet Events, introducing themselves as the new management and informing me they would now be my only point of contact. The email claimed all existing agreements would be honored--that turned out to be false. Within days, they demanded an additional $600 for security, which was already included and paid for, and also a cleanup crew, which had been previously approved to not have. When I challenged the charges and showed proof, they removed the fee for the security but insisted that our catering approval was invalid since it wasn't in writing. Despite our prior verbal approval directly from the owner, we were forced to pay another $400 for their cleanup crew, just weeks before the wedding. They knew we had no choice at that point--they had us cornered. Then came the wedding day itself, which should have been joyful and stress-free. Instead, Amanda interrupted us ladies while we were getting ready to complain about parking (for cars that weren't even ours). Then a "day-of-coordinator" appeared, also interrupting me getting ready, even though I had been told that a day of coordinator would not be provided unless we paid extra. I was happy to have this help, but unfortunately she didn't follow my instructions at all. She was either unaware of or completely ignored my plan to walk down the flat, accessible pathway to the aisle and forced me, in heels and a ballgown, and my uncle, who was escorting me and should not be going up or down stairs, to climb down a steep set of stairs and an uneven set of rocks they considered stairs. It was awkward, unsafe, and humiliating. The ceremony itself was lovely thanks to our family and vendors--but the reception quickly became chaos. From the moment we walked in, we were rushed nonstop. It made no sense until later, when my husband explained to me that he was told that "by contract," the event had to end at 9 p.m. or we'd need to pay another $400 to continue--even though our signed contract clearly stated we had the venue until 11 p.m. By then, we were exhausted and out of options. The staff began pushing guests out early, ruining our last dance and cutting short the night we'd dreamed of for years. We had definitive plans to pack any leftovers to bring home to our house, but we were so rushed (as if we were expected to not only end the wedding at 9 but also have all cleanup done at 9 as well) that we didn't even get to do that. We just had let one of the vendors take it, which in hindsight was probably close to several hundred dollars' worth of food. When we looked back at the contract later, our suspicions were confirmed: management had simply scheduled their crew until 9 p.m. and tried to pressure us into paying more so they could leave early. Our guests felt uncomfortable, our timeline was destroyed, and one of the happiest nights of our lives now carries a permanent stain. In short--the venue is beautiful, but the new management is absolutely not trustworthy. If you're considering this venue, I strongly urge you to verify every detail in writing and triple check who you're dealing with.

She continued to remain equally as enthusiastic throughout the planning stages to the day of our wedding. The place is gorgeous for an outdoor ceremony, and then equally gorgeous for an indoor reception. In fact, my groom (who, let's face it wasn't as 'into' the planning part as I was) took another walk around the property, and took some more pictures soaking the scenery all again the morning after when he went by to pick up the beer kegs we left.
